WBD Is Officially For Sale As "Multiple Parties" Circle - What Does This Mean For DC Studios?

Despite declining a recent offer from Paramount, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has now confirmed that the company is indeed weighing up “unsolicited interest” from “multiple parties.”

Earlier this month, we got word that the recently-merged Paramount Skydance had made an offer to purchase Warner Bros. Discovery. This initial offer was rebuffed, but we now have confirmation that the company is for sale.

In a lengthy press release, WBD CEO David Zaslav revealed that they have received "unsolicited interest from multiple parties" for the entire company, as well as for Warner Bros. separately, and are currently initiating a review of strategic alternatives.

"While Warner Bros. Discovery (the “Company”) (NASDAQ: WBD) continues to advance its previously announced separation of Warner Bros. and Discovery Global, its Board of Directors today announced it has initiated a review of strategic alternatives to maximize shareholder value, in light of unsolicited interest the Company has received from multiple parties for both the entire company and Warner Bros. Through this process, the Warner Bros. Discovery Board will evaluate a broad range of strategic options, which will include continuing to advance the Company’s planned separation to completion by mid-2026, a transaction for the entire company, or separate transactions for its Warner Bros. and/or Discovery Global businesses.

As part of the review, the Company will also consider an alternative separation structure that would enable a merger of Warner Bros. and spin-off of Discovery Global to our shareholders. “We continue to make important strides to position our business to succeed in today’s evolving media landscape by advancing our strategic initiatives, returning our studios to industry leadership, and scaling HBO Max globally. We took the bold step of preparing to separate the Company into two distinct, leading media companies, Warner Bros. and Discovery Global, because we strongly believed this was the best path forward.”

Though no specific interested parties were named, Comcast and Netflix are believed to be among them.

What would a sale of the entire company mean for DC Studios? Despite nonsensical rumors that WBD is having "buyer's remorse" about hiring James Gunn to shepherd in a new DCU era and may intend to use any potential purchase or merger as an excuse to fire him, it's highly unlikely that DC Studios or its current movie/TV slate would be impacted to any significant degree. Gunn has already made it clear that his contract would remain secure one way or the other.

The mention of Netflix as a potential buyer has caught the attention of the #RestoreTheSnyderVerse faithful, who also believe that there might be something to Zack Snyder continuing to share photographs from his time working on the likes of Man of Steel and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Zaslav added, “It’s no surprise that the significant value of our portfolio is receiving increased recognition by others in the market. After receiving interest from multiple parties, we have initiated a comprehensive review of strategic alternatives to identify the best path forward to unlock the full value of our assets.”

“Our decision to initiate this review underscores the Board’s commitment to considering all opportunities to determine the best value for our shareholders,” added Samuel A. Di Piazza, Jr., Chair of the Warner Bros. Discovery Board of Directors. “We continue to believe that our planned separation to create two distinct, leading media companies will create compelling value. That said, we determined taking these actions to broaden our scope is in the best interest of shareholders.

Warner Bros. Discovery does not intend to make any further announcements regarding the review of strategic alternatives unless and until the Board approves a specific transaction or otherwise determines further disclosure is appropriate or necessary."

Let's go back and look at the BTS pics from BvS and ponder how one man's direction caused a Studio to be sold three times over.

I wonder if they’ll be able to get that Superman/Lex film into production in time before it’s sold and the Gunn DCU is killed.

@Bucky74 - He's still under contract for another year or so, so whatever he manages to get finished in that time will still come out regardless (unless they Batgirl them, which they could do that with a few movies if there's a merger/acquisition).

Been hearing rumblings about this internally for a few weeks. I work at one of the companies that is rumored to try and buy WB for what it's worth. They announced massive layoffs, which is something they would want to do to free up capital and cash flow when attempting a buyout.

@Shivermetimbers - That's wild to slash your workforce for a better chance at a bid. Yeah they might make bank over time if they win it but if they don't how much home grown talent have you thrown away and how long does that take to replace? Crazy stuff.

Seriously unbelievable lol. They couldn't keep DC on ice for like 2 years just to wait for this inevitable sale. They just had to shit out a quick Superman movie to make a buck. I have a feeling Supergirl and/or Clayface will underperform or perform as expected (poorly) and will create the perfect storm to just start over. DC is cursed at this point if this is the trajectory.

Yes I'm sure whoever buys WB will want to keep paying the salary for Writer/Director/Showrunner/Producer/Co-Chair of DC Studios James Gunn lol
FallenThomas
FallenThomas - 10/21/2025, 10:43 AM
Right decision or not, irrespective of opinion, this is the perfect scenario to jettison Gunn's universe and refocus direction. WB could begin a period of smaller scale projects or decide to park CBMs for five years to sidestep the forecast downturn. Either way, as somebody else has mentioned, if Supergirl is poorly received Jimbo is toast.

CorndogBurglar

@FallenThomas - The sad thing about Gunn's Superman is I feel like he's built a good universe, in the sense that its bright, colorful, and actually FEELS like Superman's world.

I honestly don't want to see that aspect of it go away.

Having said that, I really was not a fan of the movie. More importantly, I wasn't a fan of how he treated Superman in his own movie.

He got crapped on by everyone in the movie, including Lois Lane.

He got his ass kicked by literally everything in the movie. He didn't defeat a single threat on his own. In fact, he had to get saved from every single threat. The most powerful person in the world (as they mention more than once in the movie), and he needs help beating a generic kaiju.

The Justice Gang has to save him. Krypto has to save him. And when he doesn't get saved, he gets captured like a chump, THEN gets saved by Metamorpho so he can escape.

He gets dragged through the mud for stopping a war.

Like, can we put some respect on him? Please? For God's sake.

Snyder's Superman was almost TOO powerful. ALMOST. And that world didn't feel like Superman's world. And he was too broody.

Gunn made up for some of those things, but overcompensated in others.

Its a shame, because there's a perfect medium if both Gunn and Snyder's ideas were to be combined.

@CorndogBurglar - When I first watched Gunn's Superman movie, I really enjoyed it, but I find myself liking it less in retrospect. I totally agree with your assessment and criticisms. I loved the visuals, the characters, the tone of the world he built, but Superman himself was a punching bag. All the things you mentioned, PLUS that weird thing about his parents wanting him to create a harem and take over the planet. His emotional outbursts were a little jarring too. Really like the actor and the world around him, so I am interested in this universe moving forward, but I thought it could have been done better.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 10/21/2025, 1:20 PM
@Shivermetimbers - Yeah, exactly. The whole thing with his parents though? I'm willing to bet we find out in the sequel that Lex found a way to manipulate the footage. Its too convenient that we never heard what it originally said, Lex gets it, then suddenly we hear this [frick]ed up message. Its too convenient.

Although Gunn definitely went out of his way to make it sound like it was impossible to alter and let the movie end with everyone thinking its legit.

But we are talking about Lex Luthor here. He's capable of figuring out anything. And since we know he is teaming up with Superman in the sequel it could be a revelation Lex makes to get Superman to trust him and team up with him. If he tells the world the truth about his Parents' message.
Shivermetimbers
Shivermetimbers - 10/21/2025, 2:12 PM
@CorndogBurglar - I was hoping that would be what it turned out to be. Personally, I feel like that is something that they should have cleared up before the end of the movie if that was the case though.
Timerider
Timerider - 10/21/2025, 4:04 PM
@CorndogBurglar - James Gunn didn’t want to make Superman so powerful that you wouldn’t care, he wanted to make him a little more vulnerable and weak, he makes mistakes, a not so perfect Superman. That’s more interesting to watch.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 10/21/2025, 6:48 PM
@CorndogBurglar - I can't even imagine how good a Superman would be with the verisimilitude and cinematic respect of Man of Steel and the upbeat, slightly more comical, lighter approach of Gunn's Superman.

@CorndogBurglar - Superman made it pretty clear he was actively trying to hold back and not kill the kaiju. He was also trying to save people at the same time. He could've killed it in a second if he wanted to that was the whole argument the Gang was making. I don't think you paid attention. The only fight Superman stuggled with in the movie was against someone with his own strength and durability. The only thing that I didn't like was Lois Lane was pretty much an asshole to him.

CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 10/21/2025, 8:47 PM
@Timerider - And I'm on board with that. But are we really saying making him a little more vulnerable is an excuse for not winning a single fight on his own in his own movie?
