DEADPOOL 2: Is Cable A Mutant? Not Even The Sequel's Screenwriters Are Entirely Sure

Cable may be suffering from that techno-organic virus in Deadpool 2 but we never learn his backstory or find out if he's a mutant. Now, the sequel's screenwriters weigh in on why things were left vague.

Deadpool 2 throwing Cable into the mix was something embraced by fans from the very start and while the sequel does a great job introducing the character, there's a lot about the character which isn't addressed including his parentage, the extent of his powers, and whether or not he's actually a mutant.

Those are all things which will hopefully be addressed in X-Force but it's hard to ignore the fact that Josh Brolin's version of Cable used technology instead of superpowers so does that mean he's just a regular guy? Well, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have revealed why that kept that deliberately vague.

"I think it is a little of an open question. We’re going to explore Cable more moving forward, we just didn’t want to overload it," Reese explains. "We did have versions of the script where he was using telekinesis, and it just became — suddenly he was Force-hurling stuff, it felt like Star Wars. We just decided to dial it back. Let’s keep it about technology. Let’s not overwhelm the audience."

While Cable is able to levitate his gun in the movie in order to bring it back to him, Wernick went on to point out why that may, in fact, not be the case. "But even that feels like it’s a technology means, as opposed to maybe he’s using his mind to do it. It’s just a fine line to making him complex and interesting and not overloading an audience with crazy backstory, and the techno-organic virus, which we’ll get into hopefully in the future, and those kinds of things. We’re kind of riding that line."

"It could be a little overwhelming, I think, for a mainstream audience, so we wanted to keep it simple and relatable," Wernick concluded. "You’ve got this time traveler from the future who’s trying to save his family, I think was the core of who Cable was in a Deadpool 2 movie. Moving forward in X-Force, my guess is that will be explored further and better, and we’ll get more backstory as to who he is and what his powers are." Do you think this is a satisfying explanation? They weren't clear about the Juggernaut, either. Mutant or using the cyttorak gem? He still appeared to have his powers, while in prison and he didn't have a collar, so I'm thinking gem.

@Luminus - Interesting they are capturing any metahumans.

@Luminus - Oh a easy with the spoilers though, still a little close to release.

@MrBillCipher - This article is a spoiler, though. "We never learn Cable's backstory." "Cable is able to levitate his gun in the movie."

Even though mine is a bigger spoiler, and plus it's Monday morning.

Also, you should never go into the comment section of a movie you're planning to see, but avoid spoilers. You will be sorry like 90% of the time.

@Luminus - True, just ease a little, ease...

@MrBillCipher - lol. Okay
IronMandarin
IronMandarin - 5/21/2018, 4:53 AM
@Luminus - Most likely not magic since he had an electric cable shoved up his arse and was thrown in a swimming pool.

Then again he didn't have his full armor.
Luminus
Luminus - 5/21/2018, 4:54 AM
@IronMandarin - You can see him climbing out of the pool, at the end.
IronMandarin
IronMandarin - 5/21/2018, 5:02 AM
@Luminus - Correct he survives, but comic book Juggs is generally a lot more powerful than that considering that once he starts moving basically nothing can stop him. Colossus probably wouldn't have been able to beat that version so I'm going with him being a mutant.

But then again this is the sort of universe where they casually mention that Shatterstar is from Mojoworld so who knows.

@IronMandarin - I concur with everything you said, except the mutant part. No collar. No mutant. Someone brought it up on John Campea's show, but it went over his and his wife's heads.
IronMandarin
IronMandarin - 5/21/2018, 5:12 AM
@Luminus - Hmm interesting.

If he is magic then he's been clearly nerfed from the comics.
Origame
Origame - 5/21/2018, 5:36 AM
@Luminus - I don't know about that. Clearly his power effected his size too, which the collars don't do anything for in that regard. Maybe they tried the collar but he was so big he could break them anyway so his cage kinda acts in the same way as the collar. Personally, I really don't see the point of him NOT being a mutant, especially since as of right now this version won't be in a universe where other kinds of superheroes exist.
Luminus
Luminus - 5/21/2018, 5:54 AM
@Origame - He can't break them, though, if he's a mutant. Once they put it on you, that's it. Powers gone. He had his powers in that cell, which is why I question the mutant thing.

@IronMandarin - Yup.
Origame
Origame - 5/21/2018, 7:35 AM
@Luminus - you still get the abilities from being a massive guy. He looks like he can break the regardless of extra powers.
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 5/21/2018, 1:56 PM
@Luminus - I assumed they went with mutant but its true that we never saw him with a collar. But if he had his powers while in prison how tf does concrete keep him there?
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 5/21/2018, 1:58 PM
@IronMandarin - I was so cheezed when he wasnt wearing his armor under that jump suit. They better be planning a full on Juggernaut in the ñext one, assuming hes alive.
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 5/21/2018, 2:00 PM
@IronMandarin - Id also like to see a less nerfed version but then again, different comic writers nerf him all the time to suit their needs.
IronMandarin
IronMandarin - 5/21/2018, 6:20 PM
@Ryguy88 - Ah but he's not dead. You see him climbing out of the pool at the end.
Luminus
Luminus - 5/21/2018, 9:25 PM
@Origame - Dude, if you think you can shake an entire prison, just because you have big muscles, I have a bridge I want to sell you.
Luminus
Luminus - 5/21/2018, 9:31 PM
@Ryguy88 - Like I said, the prison itself has some sort of tech keeping him there.
Origame
Origame - 5/22/2018, 1:29 AM
@Luminus - You might have a point if THERE HAS EVER BEEN ANYONE ALIVE AS IMPOSSIBLY HUGE AS THE JUGGERNAUT WAS HERE!
Origame
Origame - 5/22/2018, 1:30 AM
@Luminus - Plus, we're talking about the collar. Not the prison. Where are you getting the shaking from?
Luminus
Luminus - 5/22/2018, 1:59 AM
@Origame - Hold my drink:

The prison shook, when he hit the wall/door. Go back and watch.
Luminus
Luminus - 5/22/2018, 2:00 AM
That's close enough to Juggernaut.
Luminus
Luminus - 5/22/2018, 2:01 AM
@Origame - Compare the arm sizes:

Origame
Origame - 5/22/2018, 2:13 AM
@Luminus - I'll admit I don't remember that, but in all seriousness, Dwayne Johnson is nowhere near the size of Juggernaut in that movie. Heck, he's not even the size of Colossus and Colossus was half the size of Juggernaut.
Luminus
Luminus - 5/22/2018, 2:26 AM
@Origame - I'm not buying that a human the size of Juggernaut can shake the jail. He's only that big because A) he's a mutant or B) he's using the gem. The collar would take care of A, so no shaking the cell/very loud noise.
Origame
Origame - 5/22/2018, 2:29 AM
@Luminus - Again, as illustrated in the movie, the collar does nothing to their size. Juggernaut is hulk sized. Size alone is plenty. Especially with the logic of a COMEDY
Luminus
Luminus - 5/22/2018, 3:18 AM
@Origame - Juggernaut is big BECAUSE of the mutation/gem. The collar would remove that. That's what the collars do, don't they? Just like Leech's power does.
Ryguy88
Ryguy88 - 5/22/2018, 3:30 AM
@Origame - @Luminus

Id say they inentionally left it open incase they want to go deeper into his powers later on. Kinda like with Cable.
Luminus
Luminus - 5/22/2018, 3:32 AM
@Ryguy88 - Probably.
Origame
Origame - 5/22/2018, 4:04 AM
@Luminus - The collar doesn't effect any mutations that change appearances. Remember, Deadpool looks like he does (at least in terms of this continuity) because of his mutation. Yet he still looks the same. So Juggernaut would still maintain his size here.
Origame
Origame - 5/22/2018, 4:10 AM
@Ryguy88 - That's exactly what I'm trying to say. It can still totally be a mutation.
Luminus
Luminus - 5/22/2018, 4:21 AM
@Origame - No he doesn't. Deadpool looked normal, when the film started. It's those crazy experiments that disfigured him. Either way, the shaking jail is the key here. No human can do that, regardless of how big. I don't think this guy can shake your house, do you? Even if he had Juggernaut muscles.

Origame
Origame - 5/22/2018, 4:36 AM
@Luminus - You mean those experiments that merely put stress on him so his mutation would kick in? His "transformation" came when he was deprived of oxygen. I don't know about you, but that doesn't make me look like I'm a burn victim. And again, UNLESS YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO'S AS BIG (both tall and muscular (that guy isn't even as tall)) THEN YOU CAN'T SAY FOR SURE!
Luminus
Luminus - 5/22/2018, 4:51 AM
@Origame - Um, that guy is Robert Pershing Wadlow, the tallest man in the world. I'm done.
Origame
Origame - 5/22/2018, 2:01 PM
@Luminus - ...did you not see Deadpool 2? Juggernaut was clearly taller. You're talking about the real life tallest person vs a fictional behemoth of a man that needed to be cgi'd in order to work. Now you're just getting desperate over the fact there's plenty of room to say he's a mutant in this continuity.
Luminus
Luminus - 5/22/2018, 11:47 PM
@Origame - No, not desperate. Geesh. We just disagree. Why does everything have to be extra? Whether he's a mutant or not IS THE POINT of this debate. I'm done... again.
Origame
Origame - 5/23/2018, 4:18 AM
@Luminus - So...you agree with the guy who said that he could very easily be a mutant OR have the magic, yet when I come up with the only plausible way for him to still be a mutant, you go on a tirade?

And no, my side has never been about him definitively being a mutant. Just that it's still possible and that's the path I would prefer (as in, there's really no reason to bring magic into it).
