Artemis Fowl was originally set to be released in theaters on May 31st, but the COVID-19 pandemic changed the studio's plans, and Kenneth Branagh's live-action adaptation of Eoin Colfer's popular series of novels is heading straight to Disney+ instead.

A premiere date has been confirmed by the streaming service today, and we now know that we can look forward to watching Artemis Fowl just a little bit later on Friday, June 12th.

"Artemis Fowl is a true original," Branagh said in a statement confirming the news. "In challenging times, a twelve year old criminal mastermind is one heck of a travelling companion. Smart, funny, and cool as mustard, he’ll take you to new worlds, meet unforgettable characters, and mix magic with mayhem."

"His own family is everything to him, and (although he’d never admit it), he’d be as proud as I am that families around the world will now be able to enjoy his first amazing screen adventures together, on Disney +," the filmmaker concluded.

Artemis Fowl stars newcomer Ferdia Shaw in the title role alongside Lara McDonnell, Josh Gad, Tamara Smart, Nonso Anozie, Josh McGuire, Nikesh Patel, Adrian Scarborough, Colin Farrell, and Judi Dench. A TV spot has also been released by Disney, and you can watch that below:

Looking at it, I'm surprised this was ever headed for theatres.

I know the title is from the source material. I know you should never judge a book by its cover. I know I'm being ignorant and superficial but still...the title makes it sound like a crap movie.

@tylerzero - Most complaint I've heard is that the movie is soft compared to the book, everything is changed to make harmless and inaffensive.

@tylerzero - books were great. Movie looks like it threw out just about everything except the names

The question is...on June 12th will we be starting to get back to some semblance of our pre-pandemic lives and this movie becomes lost in the journey to our new normal, or will our quarantined and entertainment-starved lizard brains be so grateful for anything new that this movie becomes an at-home blockbuster mega-hit and on June 13th we’re all on here posting about Artemis Fowl being the next Harry Potter?

I know nothing of the source material but the trailer looks...

It's good to hear the director actually call him a criminal mastermind because you wouldn't know it from any of the promotional material.

The books were really unique because Artemis Fowl is a villain in the first book and slowly over the course of the series becomes more of an anti-hero. This looks terrible

@MrDandy - Really. How did they miss the mark on the arc?

@SanFranLand - everything in the trailer is different from the book. In the series Artemis figures out about fairies on his own (his family never knew about them), he is the villain, the fairy Holly is his enemy, he is trying to rob the fairies to regain his family wealth, and is criminal mastermind with Butler being more his badass henchman. In this one Artemis looks more like a wide-eyed spy kids like character who is introduced to a magical world and trying to save his father

@MrDandy - Totallly! I worded that all wrong. I agree with you 100%. What I meant was, “how in the hell did the studio miss the mark on the story arc of this character?” That he was nasty at first made it fun and unique.

Loved these books as a child, looks like they didn't follow the source material very well. It's honestly better that it's coming to Disney+, because I probably wouldn't have seen it in theaters, unless there was great reviews or word of mouth behind it.

This movie was originally set to come out last year.
