MULAN Becomes The First Of Disney's Live-Action Remakes To Receive A PG-13 Rating

The trailers for Mulan definitely suggested that it was going to be a far more intense experience than Disney's previous live-action offerings, and that's now been reflected in the movie's PG-13 rating...

Mulan has now become the first of Disney's recent crop of live-action remakes to receive a PG-13 from the Motion Picture Association of America.

It was clear from the trailers that Niki Caro's adaptation was going to be very different from the animated film that inspired it. With no songs, no dragon sidekick and a far more serious tone, the movie seemed closer to a David Lean (Lawrence of Arabia) or Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samurai) historical epic than the usual Disney fare.

While we probably shouldn't expect the battle scenes to be too intense for younger viewers, The MPAA clearly believed the "sequences of violence" were enough to warrant the stronger rating.

Mulan is set to hit theaters on March 27. You can check out the most recent trailer below.

Acclaimed filmmaker Niki Caro brings the epic tale of China’s legendary warrior to life in Disney’s “Mulan,” in which a fearless young woman risks everything out of love for her family and her country to become one of the greatest warriors China has ever known.

Mulan stars Liu Yifei as the titular warrior, Donnie Yen (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as Commander Tung, Jason Scott Lee (Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story) as Böri Khan, Yoson An (Ghost Bride) as Cheng Honghui, Gong Li (Curse of the Golden Flower) as Xianniang and Jet Li (Hero) as The Emperor.
