"Watch and you'll see, some day I'll be, part of your world!"

Disney fans have been waiting quite a while to see some (substantial) new footage from the Mouse House's live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, and a full trailer finally debuted last night during the 95th Academy Awards.

This latest teaser focuses on Ariel (Halle Bailey) making a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula (Melissa McCarthy), which will allow her to grow legs and make her way to the "above world" in an attempt to track down her true love, Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King).

Unfortunately, the mermaid pays a heavy price as her part of the bargain.

We also get a first proper look at Scuttle, Flounder, Sebastian, and Ursula's moray eel lackeys Flotsam and Jetsam.

Bailey and McCarthy star alongside Javier Bardem as King Triton, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, and Awkwafina as Scuttle.

The Little Mermaid will feature music from the animated classic as well as four new songs. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who previously worked with Marshall on Mary Poppins Returns, will also compose original music for Mermaid along with Alan Menken.

The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.

The movie is set to swim into theaters on May 26, 2023.

Feel like I already watched the whole movie, that itself look exactly the same as all the other Disney remakes, by watching this trailer. I don't even know why I bother anymore.

@bkmeijer1 - These movies are not for the adults who grew up on the originals. They are for kids today. And all of the 90’s disney cartoons that have been adapted to live action so far have done financially well and this one probably will too.

@mountainman - true. Still, it just feels kinda soulless. Kids movie or not

@bkmeijer1 - I haven’t even watched the trailer and I feel the same but it’s probably because I did as a kid lol kidding aside it’s never been a good movie to me.

@mountainman - Yeah, i can garuntee 90% of the users on here are not the target audience for this movie.... But they'll still kick up a fuss..

@mountainman - or, you know, we can just show the kids the original. Don't need to go through the trouble of spending money on the exact same movie with less heart and a "progressive" casting choice.

Besides, they haven't been doing financially well. You're thinking of the rare exceptions like lion king. But you ignore Dumbo, lady and the tramp, Mulan, and Pinocchio.

@Origame - eh they’re pretty split. Definitely all the stinkers you said but they also had winners like Aladdin, beauty and the beast, the jungle book, and maleficent.

Mind you they’re all soulless cash grabs but unfortunately I don’t see them stopping anytime soon.

@EZBeast - 1) maleficent was not a remake but a complete reimagining that put the villain in the position of main character/hero. So that doesn't really count. It's basically a different story, which is all I'm asking for.

2) all the ones I mentioned are newer than the ones you mentioned. It's showing bare minimum people are getting tired of this really quick and don't want the same sh!t they've already gotten years ago, just worse. And that's showing disney will stop soon, or fall apart financially.

@MyCoolYoung - to be honest, I think it wasn't a good movie either.

My favorite Disney animated movies are Treasure Planet, Black Cauldron and Atlantis, and since they were never popular I doubt they'll ever get the remake treatment.

Also saw you mentioned me in the Last of Us article, but I'm not gonna read it (or the article) yet as I haven't seen the ep yet. Later tonight probably.

@bkmeijer1 - I literally said in my mention don’t read my response if you haven’t seen it I do not remember those at all. Is it Atlantis: the lost empire?

@Origame - I’m specifically referring to the remakes to the big 90’s cartoons that have been the “soulless” remakes: Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King. All three performed very well. This looks to be more similar to those than the others you mentioned.

I’m not a fan of these remakes at all, but I can recognize the business strategy here.

@bkmeijer1 - Those are all amazing movies. Loved the old 70’s/80’s movies. The Great Mouse Detective, Robin Hood, The Rescuers, The Brave Little Toaster. So many under-appreciated classics.

@mountainman -

Financially speaking, this is very likely going to be very profitable.

From a strictly strategic perspective; when return of investment is tallied "at the end of the day", the final outcome balancing ⚖️ cost vs. profit, will show that the relative production risk will have been justified

@Scripturepoetic - Hence why Disney won't try anything original! and why Iger has announce more sequels.. lol.

I'm not bashing the mermaid here though, but a reaonsable change to please all parties would be for more original ideas and movies. but Disney won't be taking those risk.

"The Black Cauldron"!!

THAT is the title I'm genuinely excited about!

IF someone can pitch an approach that knocks the concept out of the park 🏞️...

Damn!

That will be a sight to see!!

@UniqNo -

From a financial standpoint; I absolutely understand

From a creative standpoint... It is what it is

I am looking forward to something special from certain titles, like a killer approach to "The Black Cauldron"

bkmeijer1 - 3/13/2023, 11:42 AM
@MyCoolYoung - that's a good coincidence then.

And yeah, it's indeed Atlantis: The Lost Empire. The others, especially Treasure Planet is great.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/13/2023, 11:43 AM
@mountainman - Robin Hood and The Rescuers were pretty great too.

You ever saw the recent Chip 'n Dale movie? Thought that was a really well-done attempt at bringing a classic into live-action.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/13/2023, 11:45 AM
@Scripturepoetic - recently learned Black Cauldron was based on a fantasy book series called The Chronicles of Prydain. Wouldn't mind seeing that turned into a live-action franchise.
UniqNo
UniqNo - 3/13/2023, 11:49 AM
@Scripturepoetic - Yeah, i think i said in another post but if they dedicate like 1 or 2 years to just releasing original content not related to any franchises incl Marvel (similar to Pixar before Disney pushed sequels on them) and they're well recieved, they can then milk those properties worth for another 100 years!

They've can continue revenue with all the merchendising and theme parks stuff and take the risk. But it's business and greed unfortunately.

@bkmeijer1 -

"The Chronicles of Prydain"
by Lloyd Alexander

They are five novels based on Welsh mythology; there's an incredible adaptation to be made out of it, from the right talent

It could be incredible!

@UniqNo -

Disney is a MEGA Corporation, that absolutely exists for profit

There is no debate about that

@UniqNo -

The balancing ⚖️ act to please all parties 🤔

Well...

As talent going into Disney,
You have to accept that Disney's goal 🥅 is to make 🤑 money 💰; and they WILL (they calculate their metrics, to obsession)

As far as risk...

Filmmaking is expensive and risky

@bkmeijer1 - I didn’t see it. The trailer gave me an Alvin and the Chipmunks vibe. If it’s good, I’d enjoy that. Loved that cartoon (and the NES game) as a kid.

As a consumer...

I appreciate other studios' approaches

Netflix had one property, in development, I was looking forward to:

Jeff Smith's "Bone"

I hope the animated adaptation to that title DOES become a reality, one way, or another
