Eternals is the only Marvel Studios movie to drop to "rotten" status on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, and the divisive superhero epic has now been landed with another rather dubious distinction.
The Chloe Zhao-directed film has now left U.S. theaters, finishing up its domestic run with a disappointing $164.9 million. This gives Eternals the lowest domestic haul of any MCU-set movie aside from 2008's The Incredible Hulk ($134M).
Of course, the pandemic has to be considered a factor, and it's important to note that the movie performed much better overseas (its global cume is $402 million).
A direct sequel to Eternals has yet to be announced, and you have to believe the movie's BO performance and critical reception did influence Disney's decision not to fast-track a follow-up. This doesn't mean we won't be seeing these characters again, of course, but it might be some time before the immortal heroes reassemble on the big screen.
Kit Harington's Dane Whitman is expected to appear in the Blade reboot, but who knows when we'll get to rejoin Thena, Druig, Makkari and Eros on their search for fellow Eternals Sersi, Phastos and Kingo.
