According to The Wrap, Eternals will remain #1 at the box office this weekend despite surprisingly strong competition from Clifford the Big Red Dog. With an estimated three-day haul of $27 million, the movie suffered a 62% drop from its $71 million debut; that's not actually a bad result, especially with 47% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 'B' CinemaScore (most MCU movies do 'A-' and above).
After 10 days of release, the latest Phase 4 movie will have a domestic total of around $118 million.
As for that second weekend, it's lower than Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' $34.7 million, but higher than Black Widow's $25 million. The difference there, of course, is that the latter movie was available on Disney+ Premier Access service for $29.99 in people's homes.
One Marvel movie that is exceeding expectations is Sony's Venom: Let There Be Carnage. After grossing an additional $3.8 million this weekend, the sequel has hit the $200 million mark at the domestic box office. It now joins Shang-Chi as the only release of 2021 to achieve that impressive feat.
"A powerful, sweeping exploration of love, life, and the MCU’s history, Eternals occasionally stumbles, but when it soars, this is Marvel Studios at its magnificent best," we said in our Eternals review. Fans certainly seem to agree, as the response from the majority has been positive thus far.
