ETERNALS Star Kumail Nanjiani Says He "Started Counselling" Because Of The Negative Reviews

Kumail Nanjiani, who played Kingo in Marvel Studios' Eternals, has revealed that the negative reviews for the movie had a significant impact on his mental health...

Though a lot of fans feel that Chloé Zhao's Eternals is highly underrated, the movie was not well-received by critics when it arrived in theaters in 2021, and actually ended up becoming the MCU's first "Rotten" entry with a 47% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

We had heard that the overall negative reception was not something the studio was anticipating, and this has now been confirmed by Kingo actor Kumail Nanjiani.

“It was really, really hard because Marvel thought that movie was going to be really, really well reviewed, so they lifted the embargo early and put it in some fancy movie festivals and they sent us on a big global tour to promote the movie right as the embargo lifted,” Nanjiani revealed on the latest episode of the Inside of You podcast.

Nanjiani says he was "too aware" of the reviews, and found it especially difficult to do press for the movie in the midst of the backlash.

“I think there was some weird soup in the atmosphere for why that movie got slammed so much, and I think not much of it has to do with the actual quality of the movie,” he continued. “It was really hard, and that was when I thought it was unfair to me and unfair to [my wife] Emily, and I can’t approach my work this way anymore. Some shit has to change, so I started counseling. I still talk to my therapist about that.”

There has been some talk of an Eternals sequel (though nothing has been made official), but even if a direct follow-up never materializes, Marvel almost certainly has plans for the characters that were introduced in the movie.

Based on Nanjiani's comments, though, we're not sure if we'll be seeing Kingo again!

“Emily says that I do have trauma from it,” he continued. “We actually just got dinner with somebody else from that movie and we were like, ‘That was tough, wasn’t it?’ and he’s like ‘Yeah, that was really tough,’ and I think we all went through something similar.”

Marvel Studios’ Eternals follows a group of heroes from beyond the stars who had protected the Earth since the dawn of man. When monstrous creatures called the Deviants, long thought lost to history, mysteriously return, the Eternals are forced to reunite in order to defend humanity once again.

The outstanding ensemble cast includes Gemma Chan as humankind-loving Sersi, Richard Madden as the all-powerful Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as cosmic-powered Kingo, Lia McHugh as the eternally young, old-soul Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as the intelligent inventor Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as the super-fast Makkari, Barry Keoghan as aloof loner Druig, Don Lee as the powerful Gilgamesh, with Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, with Salma Hayek as the wise and spiritual leader Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as the fierce warrior Thena.

@mynameisn0body - People can have mental health issues exacerbated by the slightest events and are often a build up on multiple things.

If anything talking about struggles takes more courage

@mynameisn0body - Mental healthcare is no joke, and admitting that you have shit to work through is a lot more manly than bottling it up until you beat the shit out of somebody at a bar or some other dumb shit.

It didn't look bad, the actors weren't bad, the visuals weren't awful. This movie suffered mostly from pacing issues. It just seemed to drag on and on with no interesting developments for such a long period of time.

@PC04 - - nailed it. The first act is the most poorly paced. Everything with Gemma and Jon Snow. The acting was dull; Too many sighs.

Should have been snappier. Maybe don't reveal you're an Eternal to him. Reveal it to the audience through story. We've only just met these guys and already there's a scene where she's revealing to her boyfriend that she's an Eternal.

This should have been the very final scene when they're walking through the park and it shouldn't have been her telling him, just him reacting, after being told and already coming to terms with it.

Honestly just one little thing like that can kill your movie if it's right up front in the first act like that.

@xfan320 - another valid point. I think whoever wrote that was a script doctor on the first act of Eternals.

@PC04 - I thought it was decent personally

I certainly liked some of the characters more then others aswell as the dilemma they had

I do think it might have been better served as a series.

I don’t have pitty for privileged actors, but it must be tough to expect your big break, put a lot of work into the project, and have it fail. We all have personal failures in life, but for most of us, they aren’t so public. Used to love this guy on Silicon Valley and some of his earlier comedic stuff, but he has come across as arrogant in recent years. That being said, I can empathize with how challenging that must be to be in that situation.

@mountainman - I listened to his interview on Kreischer’s podcast and felt that he was very arrogant in the most self deprecating way.. I remember thinking it was weird, something I didn’t like about him because of the interview. Liked him alot, and thought it was awesome how shredded he got all of a sudden and how everyone noticed the “nerdy kid in the back of the room” out of nowhere though.

@MarioT1000 - Yeah. Back when he was filming this Marvel was at their peak. He probably thought it would catapult him to huge stardom. And at the time it was the worst reviewed MCU movie and did poorly at the box office. That has to be tough.

I still miss his early comedy days. The first thing I saw him on was Portlandia where he did some skits and was always hilarious. And he was one of the best parts of Silicon Valley.

@Izaizaiza - you are so dead-on correct. as a musician, music educator it's not enjoyable to see people rip u apart. But, if you've been in "the biz" for more than 6 months you understand how thick-skinned u have to be.

Wow, how weak people have become. Trauma from a bad movie, not from a war zone or a mugging or horrible car accident, a movie......

I think we all started therapy after Eternals.
