A movie is only as good as it's villain, and with an eventual announcement of a Justice League film being expected by the CEO of Warner Brothers (and the fans), I decided to examine the villains that I think are the most likely candidates for a Justice League film. Shall we begin?
DARKSEID

One of the most well known Justice League villains and arch-nemesis to the New Gods, Darkseid is the reason the JL exist in the New 52. Darkseid is so powerful that it takes the entire League to fight him. The only member to survive a one-on-one fight is Superman. An easter egg in Man Of Steel pointed to a Superman villain named Morgan Edge, who is known for his connections to Darkseid, so this fascist dictator has a very high chance of being the baddie that brings the team to theatres.
TRIGON

Trigon is a demon conqueror and a Darkseid-level powerhouse. Trigon has conquered and slaughtered entire dimensions and is more than a match for the JL. Also, the idea of a team of super heroes stopping an invasion of demons from turning Earth into a living hell hasn't been done in a comic book movie yet. The only reason I can think off that Trigon CAN'T be the villain is that he seems more like someone the Justice League Dark would go up against, and a JLD movie is in development.
SECRET SOCIETY OF SUPERVILLAINS

The JL assembling to battle an organization of their villains also hasn't been done in a comic book movie yet, making the Secret Society perfect candidates for a JL film. Of course, there would need to be set up in previous films before just throwing in a bunch of villains in a movie. Secret Society leader Lex Luthor is being introduced in Batman Vs Superman and other villains were already referenced via easter eggs in Man Of Steel, so this organization is definitely a candidate.
THE CRIME SYNDICATE

The Crime Syndicate is a version of the Justice League from a parallel universe reverse to the mainstream. In this universe, all of the heroes are villains and all of the villains are heroes. While this concept was touched upon in Smallville and Injustice Gods Among Us, it hasn't been fully explored in a movie. So pretty much, the JL would assemble to battle evil versions of themselves.
DOOMSDAY

While Doomsday is actually a Superman villain rather than a Justice League (or general DC Universe) villain, he is extremely powerful to the point where he killed Superman in his first appearance (which is, of course, the graphic novel The Death Of Superman). We know Doomsday exist in the DC Movie Universe because he was mentioned in a Man Of Steel viral video. The thing is, Doomsday is a killing machine without much intelligence. If he is the villain, someone else will likely be pulling the strings.
AMAZO

Amazo is an android who, in his prime, has the abilities of every super-powered being in the Justice League. This automatically makes him a potential candidate for the JL film, despite a version of him appearing in Arrow.
CHECKMATE/NOWHERE/CADMUS/ETC.

Organizations such as CHECKMATE, NOWHERE, CADMUS and related are perfect candidates for many reasons (One or the other, though. We don't need all of them as villains in the same movie).  It would show just how much the government doesn't trust metahumans, which was shown in Man Of Steel. It could also set the stage for Deathstroke (via his daughter, NOWHERE member Rose Wilson), the Suicide Squad, Superboy, Bizarro, Raven, ETC. Amanda Waller and Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenburg) will almost certainly be connected to this, assuming one of these organizations takes the role of the villain.
VANDAL SAVAGE

Vandal Savage is an immortal who has been around since nearly the beginning of the DC Universe, and has manipulated history to his will. An example of this is that Savage was either Jack The Ripper or a close associate. Vandal Savage is vital to the history of the DC Universe. He was a member of the Demon Knights (the medieval Justice League). Savage would be the perfect villain candidate for a JL movie because, not only is he a great villain, but it would give us a look at the history of the DCU.
ANTI-MONITOR

Sure there are CMB's where the entire world is at stake, but how many are there were the entire Universe is at stake? The Anti-Monitor is a candidate because not only did he nearly destroy the DC Universe but he is responsible for the deaths of more people than any other character in the DCU. He was effortlessly able to murder Supergirl. If that doesn't tell you how powerful he is, I don't know what will. The Anti-Monitor would probably make JL a larger scale film than any other CMB and would provide a reason why people like Martian Manhunter, Hawkman and/or Hawkgirl, and the Green Lantern Corps would get involved.
BLACK LANTERN CORPS

The BLC are candidates for a lot of the same reasons as Anti-Monitor. With the BLC, the film would be very emotional due to the fact that the dead are rising, and they would be a real challenge for the JL to overcome. Also, who doesn't want to see the likes of Batman and Superman battling an army of zombies?
STARRO

Last but not least, Starro. Starro is the very first villain the JL ever faced in the comics. His first appearance is their first appearance. Starro The Conqueror is an extremely powerful and intelligent giant, alien starfish who conquers planets. He sends smaller clones of himself to other life forms. When they attach to the life forms, Starro has full control over that life form. Starro has nearly taken over the world on many occasions. Having Starro as the villains adds a level of suspense to the film. Who's being controlled? Who isn't? Who can be trusted?

Agree or disagree with any of these villains being candidates for a JL movie? Do you think there are any other candidates that I left out? Sound off below!

Disclaimer: I'm no expert on the Justice League or its villains, so I really don't know if there already is such a thing as what I'm going to suggest.

I think a way for DC to avoid copying not only Marvel, but the entire cliche in general, is to avoid a villain who wants to rule/destroy the world/galaxy, and instead use a villain who's going after the heroes themselves. A villain who doesn't care about power, or destruction, but actually thinks the world would be better off without heroes, and just wants to see them gone, inevitably leading to them teaming up to defeat him. Lex Luthor comes to mind for this scenario.

This way, they avoid the whole "I want to rule/destroy the world, and no single superhero can stop me!" Nice way to try something different, I guess.

Justice League: White Martians, introduce Martian Manhunter Justice League of America: Vandal Savage, introduce Aquaman Justice League: Apokolips: Darkseid. There's the perfect Justice League trilogy right there.

Nice list. Mongul and Brainiac would be good options as well.

I think an awesome premise for JL would be if Brainiac, for some mysterious purpose, basically infiltrates the entire world's communications network, taking over and shutting down everything in one fell swoop; armed forces, drones, cities, internet, etc.

Thus the need for a force who doesn't rely on the connected, plugged-in, world; the superhumans.

Secret society of supervillains would be very good once the universe is set! I wud very happy if the arch enemies come together. Lex for superman, joker for batman, black manta for aquaman, sinestro for green lantern, ares for wonder woman, reverse flash...
Knightrider
Knightrider - 4/14/2014, 2:08 AM
It's tough, as an army draws the comparisons between a JL movie and Avengers, so as much as I would have liked Sinestro, I think it is too similar to Avengers.

However, having one super-powerful villain is again: tough. How do they explain Superman punching the villain to no effect, and Batman punching the same guy. Granted Iron Man fought Hulk and Batman maybe getting a new armoured suit, which would be a way of explaining it.

If they had a Flash movie they could setup the Alternate Realities aspect of the universe, then and Injustice Leagie face off is possible. But, my choice is still Brainiac. He can cause global chaos, and create obstacles for each member to contend with, before they unite as a team at the end to stop his plan. You never know maybe they adapt his tech so have a teleporter to his now defunct ship which becomes the watchtower.

Hmm;

@Darkseid, possible regarding the new 52 origin.
@Trigon, more of an enemy for the Titans, and we'd need some build up to the character first like with Brother Blood or Raven
@Secret Society of Super Villains, we'd need a lot more build up to this, considering the only two villains we'll have are Luthor and ______
@The Crime Syndicate, I think would be perfect as it wouldn't mean we'd have to do so much building up to another villain and would be a great foil to develop the characters of the Justice League founders.
@Doomsday, I think would only just be a physical challenge for the League.
@Amazo, Cadmus and Savage are all better saved for a sequel, a lot of people may also see Amazo as a 'rip-off' to Ultron.
@Anti Monitor and Black Lantern Corps may be a bit too much this early on in the movie, even before Green Lantern gets his own movie.
@Starro is possible, but would need a lot of work.

Overall, I'd say of the list, Darkseid and the Crime Syndicate are the most likely candidates.

No to Darkseid for the first film. Utter waste.
Crime Syndicate is a cheap gimmick.
Same with the Black Lanterns.
Amazo would work as a side villain, not a central one in my opinion.

Other than that all the other candidates are decent and viable.

A JL movie has the potential to be highly intelligent such as Batman designating Superman an enemy/threat and various heroes with conflicting motives. Imagine the scenery and atmosphere created by a ruined central Metropolis under heavy construction.

Brainiac.

Zod would have been great as the first JL villain.
Klone
Klone - 4/14/2014, 6:40 AM
Brainiac will be good if they build him up and he isn't some random villain that invades Earth. I refer back to my point about how this Brainiac easter egg:

...can be made a plot element. They could have something where Brainiac infected Zod's technology, being an advanced AI-virus and since Zod's defeat began infiltrating Earth's technology. They could do a lot to build up Brainiac throughout these films and sow seeds and plot elements for his film where he finally does step up as the villain instead of him being a random alien AI invader. They could also do a social commentary about our technology right now if he is the villain.

I mean [frick], if they want to go really, really, really dark then if Brainiac infiltrates American military systems, they could reference the comics by having Brainiac take over the military systems and then proceed to destroy Coast City:

Brainiac's whole purpose is to scour the Universe for knowledge but he needs technology for that so his whole plan could be to do something such as reopening the Phantom Zone so he can gain control of how dormant ship (the one that resembles a skull), cipher Earth's knowledge, destroy and then proceed with his mission. I'm throwing out ideas off the top of my head so forgive me if they aren't any good, but I'm only saying that there is indeed a lot of potential with Brainiac.

I have a lot of ideas for a Justice League movie. My favorite probably revolves around Booster Gold and Ted Kord drunkenly time-traveling back in time and accidentally screwing up the timeline. When they sober up, they realize just how bad they f*cked up, Skeets helps them determine what they need to fix, and they decide to get the Justice League together.

I shouldn't write Justice League stories, hehehe.

Anyways, Brainiac is one of the most essential Justice League villains.

Lol, I can imagine a type of trailer for that.

"Jonah Hill is Boostah Guld! And Michael Cera is Bluw Beetal!"

He could either be a Kryptonian AI or one from Colu. It doesn't matter if he is from Krypton though. He's a totally different villain from Zod.

Justice League: Mongul, Vandal Savage, Amazo or Brainiac

If Mongul was chosen as the first villain, I would use him like this^^^
He kidnaps The League and puts them in a Gladiator type tournament. You can use this as an excuse to have the heroes fight other aliens and each other.
With Vandal Savage, I would first introduce him in a Demon Knights film. To flesh out his character a bit more, before putting him in a JL film.

Justice League 2: Darkseid
Before putting Darkseid in a JL film, he should first be introduced in a New Gods film, like this.

Also, it would be a great excuse to use this baad @ss.

Justice League 3: The Anti-Monitor or Imperiex
A villain that Threatens the entire DCU. The Ultimate threat for the League, the final boss.

@DrunkenPirateNukem

I agree, Trigon should be saved for The JL Dark. I mean, he's a demon, how more supernatural can you get than that?

Mongul, Vandal Savage or Doomsday with Lex pulling the strings.

I think Braniac should be a supes only villain

Darksied for later.

WB could do like they did in the New 52 and introduce Darkseid in JL, then reveal the New Gods in a Wonder Woman movie and connect them to the Greek gods.

I think Ares should be pulling the strings of the DC Universe in partnership with Darkseid.

Definitely do NOT ever use Starro. I'm sorry, but a giant starfish would just look silly in a movie. I would almost say Darkseid, but not if it was just a copy of the New 52 and War stories.

I think Starro would make for a great opening set-piece for a Justice League sequel. An in media res conflict kind of thing.

Perhaps in combination with an Atlantean invasion.

We're led to believe that it's a kraken that Arthur is controlling, but a twist reveals that the beast is actually controlling him. It then takes control of Superman and some other league members and we get some superhero fights.

Once resolved, Batman starts to see the JLeague as dangerous and creates failsafes, setting up the Tower of Babel / JLDoom story for the rest of the movie.
