I just got back from the Theater where i watched "Immortals" on UltraScreen 3D (Really great experience since it was my first time) and I honestly am not worried at all about what Henry Cavill will bring to "Man Of Steel" in 2013 (he should stay away from speeches though.. he's not too good with that)
The movie covers a premise that has been touched on several times by many movies and in countless other media. The poor peasant who later becomes the leader of his people. This should be pretty predictable right? WRONG. The execution of the plot was very well done in this picture and topped with great Visuals. The central character , Theseus, who is beautifully played by rising star and "Man Of Steel"'s own Superman; Henry Cavill in a very captivating manner where you actually begin to care for his character. He steals your heart with his charm and subtle sense of humor, while he earns your respect with his hard values and discipline.
Throughout the movie you start to root for the guy. Mickey Rourke did not disappoint in his role as King Hyperion either (Though i didn't see any "super multi layered" he talks about all the time cos his character is basically the same "I lost my wife and kids and the gods did nothing" story) giving a great performance.
The overall storyline is is quite interesting too. The supporting actors doing well to convey their characters and make them not just important to the development of the Main characters but also to the story. For me the best part of this story was the underlying theme that is hidden within all the stylish fights and crisp dialogue. A philosophy so well integrated into this entertaining piece of art that you might miss it if you don't pay attention. The notion that so long long as there is good, there will always be evil... and that peace is but a little period of time before we have to fight to maintain it again. A cycle that will go on till the end of time.
The portrayal of Zeus, as a strong leader makes more impact with the showcase of his role as a father/father figure. Which works greatly to the benefit of his character and how it all goes in the end.
I think that for the fight scenes, the grand confrontation between Theseus and Hyperion take the cake. The other fights though stylish, did not carry much emotional response for me as the final bare knuckled bout between the two mortals. With every Punch, every blood drawn, the sweat, you feel a little pinch of worry everytime our hero is handed a blow. This made it more realistic for me as it was mostly devoid of all the stylish effects that usually only remind you that its not real.. This one almost makes you forget that its just a movie.
As I said earlier, Henry Cavil is a great leading man and with the kind of energy he brought to this, i am of no doubts about "Man Of Steel" (he should still work on his speeches though!) Tarsem's direction is great and i will recommend all to go see it (And in 3D if you can!)
That said, I give this movie a 4/5 only taking points of for the stylized parts of the fights.
Hope you all liked this review and please sound off your thoughts about it in the usual place.. thanks for reading!
