Fancast: X-Men Reboot

Fancast: X-Men Reboot

My latest fancast takes on a much-needed X-Men reboot (not done by Fox, featuring a mixture of original and nonoriginal casting choices.

Hey all,

I decided to go ahead and post another fancast sooner than I planned, in case I'll be too busy to do so later this week. This one's for a possible reboot of the X-Men film franchise that isn't done by Fox, which I think is necessary. In my recent Green Lantern fancast, I got some complaints about me doing some double casting (for example, Hugo Weaving and Chris Evans in the same film again), and for the most part, I avoided doing so. I also tried using less fan favorites and more original choices this time around.

Professor X/Charles Xavier - Mark Strong (as seen in Green Lantern, Sherlock Holmes, and Kick-Ass)

I know Strong usually plays a villain in his films, but I think he’d be an awesome choice for Charles Xavier (and not just because he’s bald). He was great in Holmes and phenomenal in Green Lantern, and I can see him bringing a strong performance as Xavier similar to his take on Sinestro (except Xavier won’t have any villainous leanings).

Others I considered: Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsly

Cyclops/Scott Summers- Joseph Gordon-Levitt (as seen in Inception, G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra, and Hesher)

A pretty random choice, I know. I wanted to try someone completely out of the box, but not out of the question. JGL’s a fantastic actor, and I’m excited to see what he does in next year. If he ever does another CBM after TDKR, I’d love to see him take on Cyclops.

Others I considered: Chris Pine, Brandon Routh

Storm - Zoe Saldana (as seen in Star Trek, Avatar, and Columbiana)

She may be a bit young for Storm ATM, but Saldana’s been my favorite choice for the role for the longest time. She seems to be one of the new leading ladies in sci-fi with her great performances in Avatar and JJ Abrams’ Star Trek, and if she would ever do a superhero film, they should definitely give her a call to play Storm in an X-Men reboot.

Others I considered: None

Deadpool/Wade Wilson- Will Arnett (as seen in Blades Of Glory, , and G-Force)

I don’t know much about Arnett to be honest. He seemed to be a popular choice for the role of Wilson before Ryan Reynolds got it, and I can’t find anyone else who seems fit. He’s pretty good in many of his voice roles for various animated films, I wouldn’t mind seeing him as Deadpool.

Others I considered: Ryan Reynolds

Magneto/Erik Lensherr - Jeff Bridges (as seen in TRON, Iron Man, and True Grit)

Not the most original choice, but The Dude has been one of my favorite actors for quite some time now. He was a pretty good villain in Iron Man, but I think he’d be even better as the Master of Magnetism.

Others I considered: Liam Neeson

Iceman - Garrett Hedlund (as seen in TRON: Legacy, Country Strong, and Eragon)

Another odd choice, I know (especially since Hedlund is being fancasted for every other CBM role, from Daredevil and Human Torch to Flash and Captain America). But Hedlund is a promising young actor, and based on his performance in TRON Legacy, I think he can provide the necessary nature for Iceman.

Others I considered: Sam Worthington, Anton Yelchin

Jean Grey - Emily Blunt (as seen in The Adjustment Bureau, The Wolfman, and Charlie Wilson’s War)

To be blunt (pun intended), Emily Blunt’s been cast quite often as Jean Grey (I see her in the role in every other fancast). I tried to find a more original choice, but in the end, I couldn’t find anyone who would do as well as Blunt in the role. She’s a pretty good actress too, and quite hot on top of that (let's face it, she'd look great in a skintight X-Men suit ;D).

Others I considered: Kirsten Dunst, Blake Lively, Amy Adams

Wolverine/Logan - Tom Hardy (as seen in Bronson, Inception, and Warrior)

This is another fan favorite that I whole heartedly support. Hardy’s a great actor, and I’m looking forward to seeing him as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. But after watching the trailers for Warrior, I think he’ll be a near-perfect Wolverine. He’s short but mean, something necessary for ol’ Logan.

Others I considered: Mark Walhberg, Hugh Jackman

Emma Frost/White Queen - Rachel Nichols (as seen in Star Trek, G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra, and Conan The Barbarian)

I originally wanted to cast fan favorite Alice Eve here, but I wanted to be more original. After some searching, I decided that Nichols would be a pretty good choice. She sports blonde hair well, she has the boobs, and the acting chops. She was REALLY hot in G.I. Joe but didn’t get enough time in Star Trek, I think she would be good here.

Others I considered: Alice Eve, Diane Kruger

Colossus - Mark Walberg (as seen in The Fighter, Planet Of The Apes, and The Departed)

I’ve seen Walhberg mentioned for Wolverine before, but personally I see him better as Colossus (especially after seeing his awesome fighting skills in The Fighter). He’s a pretty good actor, and one who I think can bring justice to the metallic character.

Others I considered: Sam Worthington

Nightcrawler - Andrew Garfield (as seen in The Social Network, Lions For Lambs, and The Amazing Spider-Man)

I’m sure you’re all thinking “WTF is he doing here??” or something. Zachary Quinto was my original choice, but then I saw he was way too old. After a lot of searching around, I decided that our current Spidey would be a pretty cool Nightcrawler. Watch him in Dr. Parnassus and see what I mean, Garfield's character had a somewhat similar personality there as Nightcrawler. He’s quite a promising up-and-coming actor too, I’d love to see him in more CBMs other than Spider-Man.

Others I considered: Zac Efron, Zachary Quinto

Shadowcat/Kitty Pryde - Mary Elizabeth Winstead (as seen in The Thing, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, and Live Free Or Die Hard)

I was gonna go with Emma Stone here, but when I decided that I wanted Andrew Garfield in this cast, I thought it was best not to keep Stone due to both of them sharing the spotlight in The Amazing Spider-Man. After some consideration, I thought the fan-favorite for MJ Watson would be a great Shadowcat. She was good in Scott Pilgrim and will be seen in CBM films such as The Thing and Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter in the near future, this would be another fine role for her.

Others I considered: Emma Stone

Rogue - Dakota Fanning (as seen in War Of The Worlds, Twilight, and The Runaways)

Another rather random choice, I couldn’t think of anyone else to play Rogue. Fanning’s one of the better child actors around, and I’m looking forward to seeing her grow more in the future. And I’d love to see her take on a CBM, this wouldn’t be a bad choice.

Others I considered: Emma Stone, Kristen Stewart

Gambit - Chris Hemsworth (as seen in Star Trek, Thor, and The Avengers)

Probably another WTF choice. I didn’t like the idea myself to begin with. I originally cast Hemsworth as Sabretooth (that didn’t work out), but after recasting the role I wanted him to be in here somehow. Meanwhile, I had trouble finding a good Gambit that wasn’t pricy or unoriginal. So I put two-and-two together, and I got this. Hemsworth’s a great actor, he was phenomenal in Thor. I think he’d be a pretty good (and interesting) Gambit.

Others I considered: Orlando Bloom, James Franco

Beast - Benjamin Walker (as seen in Flags Of Our Fathers, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and Paradise Lost)

I saw Walker mentioned for Beast before, and I thought that wouldn’t be a bad idea. I’m looking forward to seeing him in Vampire Hunter and Paradise Lost, I think he’d be a good Beast.

Others I considered: None

Sabretooth/Victor Creed- Karl Urban (as seen in Priest, Judge Dredd, and the Lord Of The Rings trilogy)

I know it may be odd to see four Star Trek actors in an X-Men cast, but bear with me here. I wanted to cast someone who had a beast-like attitude (something like Wolverine), and I decided to use a fan favorite for Wolverine as Sabretooth. Urban’s a pretty good actor (he was good in Star Trek), I think he’d be a good Victor Creed.

Others I considered: Chris Hemsworth

Well, that's a wrap. As with my Green Lantern fancast, I would add more characters, but I can't say I'm familiar enough with the whole X-Men universe to cast the majority of the characters.
Anyways, comments/feedback/tips are always appreciative. My next fancast will feature various characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

No pics for Emily Blunt, pretty good cast, a couple people I dislike, but pretty good. And how did I know Zoe would be your storm?

Decent list.
Urban as Sabretooth is great,
Hardy as Wolverine would be absolutely ideal,
I wouldn't pick Arnett for Deadpool personally, but I get why you'd pick him.
Fanning is a great actress but I want to get as far away from the "lil girl" vibe as possible after the Rogue we got in the X trilogy.
As much as I think Levitt is awesome, I wouldn't pick him for Cyclops at all. I like Cyclops to be a little older, with a larger physical presence.
Garfield would make a decent Nightcrawler I think, but seeing as he's Spiderman, I'd say no.

Cool article thought dude.

I would have rather had Chris Pine as Cyclops and Blake Lively as Jean Grey.

Solid cast. The only one here I'm really opposed to is Hemsworth as Gambit. He doesn't fit the role AT ALL and already nailed the role of Thor. I would have gone with James Franco. Here are my favorites.

Cyclops- JGL is perfect for many roles, this one included.
Deadpool- Never thought Arnett before, but it's actually a pretty good choice. He's hilarious, especially on Arrested Development.

Good: They're all good actors/actresses, and would do well in their respective roles.

Bad: TOO MANY BIG NAMES. This is lazy work, most of these guys have been in CBMs or films with large fanbases.

Nothing new here, I guess you just remembered all the actors you've seen in recent blockbusters.

But that's cool, it's your FANTASY cast. And a good FANTASY cast at that.

I like this a lot. There the only choices I don't like is Walhberg as Colossus he isn't big enough or Russian for that role. The next one is is Bridges as as Magneto don't get me wrong I love Bridges but he just doesn't fit as Magneto he has gotten kind of fat over the years.

You have only two villains:Magneto,Sabretooth.

@123Avengers123 As I said at the end, I'm not familiar with the X-Men universe enough to cast the majority of their characters. So for villains like Apocalypse, Sentinel, etc., I don't know them well enough to decide who'd I want to play them.
Thanks for the feedback everyone, greatly appreciate it!

Great cast Paul. You especially caught my eye with Hemsworth as Gambit. Very creative choice, and I know he'd do alot to make Gambit as his comics character like he did with Thor.

Um...sorry (again) dude, but a bit no from me (again).

Still too much double casts, well let's see, STRONG, GARFIELD, JGL, HARDY, HEMSWORTH!

Won't be much problem for me if they haven't already had BIG roles for other CBMs, I mean they are SINESTRO, SPIDEY, BANE, and THOR (okay, JGL is fine then, lol)!

The rest are okay though, BLUNT for JEAN is spot on, she's my pick too.

Not sure on BRIDGES, doesn't really scream for MAGS for me, VIGGO MORTENSEN could be!

Plus there's HEDLUND too in there, I mean it may seem a bit unoriginal to pick those two TRON actors again into a movie.

And yeah, only two villains, you may be not that familiar but you still can have TOAD, MYSTIQUE, or whoever etc.!

Keep up the work though.

; )

- Mark Strong seems to be a favorite for X.
- Not to shoot you down, but speaking like DDD, Cyclops is 6'3". I know, lifts, but I like someone who's naturally 6'3".
- I've actually thought of Will Arnett myself. But I've heard on the message boards that Deadpool is also serious, so we can't have an all-out comic actor. It works, though.
- Dude, do more research for Colossus and Kitty Pryde. They're exactly the same age. Plus, Colossus is 6'6", while Mark is about 5'9". He'd be a good Wolverine, from what I've heard.
- Do me a favor and switch Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Dakota Fanning around. Because then you'd have perfect casting chops. Besides, Dakota isn't tough enough to play Rogue like Winstead.
- Chris Hemsworth is already playing Thor, dude, sorry.
- Not a bad choice for Sabretooth, seeing as Karl Urban looks like a well-built serial killer like Sabretooth. Alexander Skarsgaard is also one to ponder, seeing as his role in Straw Dogs is just like Sabretooth.

The rest are good. I agree with Jolt17, why not throw in more villains? All the Brotherhood has is Sabretooth?

@Jolt dammit, forgot about Toad and Mystique! I'll see if I can update this with more characters later.

So many of these fan casts re-use the same old tired actors, while some of these choices that you have made here are excellent, some are simply not going to work.
I will not make any suggestions beyond no/don't so...

Here is a rebuttal list:

Professor X = Mark Strong - no. just, no.
Cyclops = Joseph Gordon-Levitt - would work, i think he has the face enough to carry off the look.
Storm = Zoe Saldana - Storm needs Curves, i like Zoe, she hot, but more curves.
Deadpool = Will Arnett - this would work, and i am a big Deadpool fan.
Magneto = Jeff Bridges - won't work, not a bad choice, but Magneto needs to be viscous and crazy
Iceman = Garrett Hedlund - as long as he is all iced out - he could be played by anyone.
Jean Grey = Emily Blunt - not bad, but her eyes might be too big.
Wolverine = Tom Hardy - need shorter/stockier AND stronger, tom hardy always seems weak to me, maybe it's the roids.
White Queen = Rachel Nichols - OK
Colossus = Mark Walberg - what. why. what part of the WORD Colossus do you not understand?
Nightcrawler = Andrew Garfield - good choice, need very slim and agile, almost not human is needed.
Shadowcat = Mary Elizabeth Winstead - not bad, but maybe a slimer choice is needed?
Rogue = Dakota Fanning - Rogue needs to get back to being the sexy southern bell - as it hasn't happened yet.
Gambit = Chris Hemsworth - Gambit isn't a big dude, this is a bad choice.
Beast = Benjamin Walker - beast could be played by anyone, anyone.
Sabretooth = Karl Urban - Not bad, but not big enough
CaptainDC

It's decent, but ask yourself this question, is it better than the original? My answer to that is no, it's not at all
DDD
DDD - 9/2/2011, 2:51 AM
Not a completely horrible casting.

PROF-X: No to MARK STRONG. He's been done
to death besides he'd be a better DR. DOOM.

CYCLOPS: CYCLOPS is a tall square-jawed
type guy, JGL ain't.

STORM: ZOE SALDANA is too little and skinny.
STORM is a tall goddess-type, well-endowed
(that means big boobies.) lol

MAGNETO: JEFF BRIDGES was already STANE in
IRON-MAN plus he's not European enough.

JEAN GREY: EMILY BLUNT-Excellent!

WOLVERINE: TOM HARDY is just not right,
he doesn't look like LOGAN at all, he doesn't
feel like LOGAN, mainly.

WHITE QUEEN: EMMA FROST is a little bit slimmer
than the buxom and built RACHEL NICHOLS. Plus
she's more European-aristocrat-looking.

DEADPOOL: WILL ARNET...pretty good idea.

NIGHTCRAWLER: ANDREW is already SPIDER-MAN.

COLOSSUS: Ha, ha, ha, ha...MARK WAHLBERG is
a midget! PIOTR RASPUTIN is 7 feet tall, listed
as that at MARVEL.

ROGUE: DAKOTA FANNING is way too young and
scrawny, should have had her for SHADOWCAT...
hey, that's not a bad idea actually! lol

SHADOWCAT: MISS WINSTEAD? I just don't get a
KITTY PRIDE vibe from her.

GAMBIT: CHRIS HEMSWORTH is too big and beefy,
GAMBIT is a slim agile-type. Plus CHRIS is THOR!

ICEMAN: BOBBY is a smaller guy. HEDLUND is
6'2".

SABRETOOTH: Not entirely a bad choice.

BEAST: BENJAMIN WALKER...NO WAY!
