Before we get started with my casting picks, I have always thought
Guillermo Del Toro would be perfect to direct this and/or Doctor Strange. I mean, Blade II and Pan's Labyrinth were excellent and I loved what he did with Hellboy!
I see this movie as an opportunity to see three dimensional character relationships and not just the archetypal strong man/brutes of the Marvel universe. Since the comic is more diverse in it's settings and characters, it gives more opportunity to use a wider spectrum of actors and creature possibilities.
The one great thing I could see someone like Del Toro doing is the make-up. I hated how crappy Howard looked in the 1986 film and Del Toro could be the one to humanize (sort of) Howard by using more make-up like he did with Ron Perlman in Hellboy.
I would like to see the same tone as the other Marvel Studios films, but with more comedy. The cast I picture would be serious, yet comically acclaimed actors.
I also want to see Howard the Duck with a temperament close to that of my favourite podcaster, Adam Carolla. Someone who is a world class complainer and has an opinion about everything.
That, and a team-up with Man-Thing would be pretty bad ass.
I want to congratulate Peter Dinklage on last night's Emmy win! I just so happened to post this about an hour before he won and I didn't even realize he was nominated. I love it!
Howard the Duck - Peter Dinklage
Howard is an anthropomorphic duck who is expelled from his home-world to Earth during an accident and is forced to find a way back home.
I picked Peter Dinklage because he has the ability to portray the same sort of angry demeanor and brilliant sense of humour as Howard the Duck.
Where I've seen Peter Dinklage:
- The Station Agent
- Elf
- Find Me Guilty
- Nip/Tuck
- Death At A Funeral
- 30 Rock
- Game of Thrones
Beverly Switzler - Evan Rachel Wood
Beverly Switzler is a model and dancer, who is also an aspiring actress and singer.
I picked Evan Rachel Wood because she is exactly what Beverly Switzler aspires to be... actor, singer, model entertainer. Not to mention she's a knockout and truly, a talented actress!
Where I've seen Evan Rachel Wood:
- Thirteen
- The Missing
- Pretty In Persuasion
- The Wrestler
- True Blood
Doctor Bong - Philip Seymour Hoffman
Formerly Lester Verde, an evil genius who has been obsessed with Beverly Switzler for years.
For a while, people were bugging Philip Seymour Hoffman about playing the Penguin and his answer was that he wouldn't do a movie like that because comic book movies are the ones he loves to watch.
That said, Doctor Bong would be perfect since he would have a giant bell sealed over his head. I picture Hoffman in a motion capture suit with his face covered the whole time because his voice and body movements would be enough to get an incredible performance for an otherwise third tier Marvel villain.
Where I've seen Philip Seymour Hoffman:
- Twister
- Boogie Nights
- The Big Lebowski
- Almost Famous
- Punch-Drunk Love
- Cold Mountain
- Along Came Polly
- Capote
- Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
- Charlie Wilson's War
- Synecdoche, New York
- Doubt
- The Boat That Rocked
Paul Same - Paul Dano
Paul is a long-time friend of Beverly Switzler, who suffers from narcolepsy and split personality.
Paul Dano is an underrated actor. He would be an interesting contrast to Beverly Switzler, what with him being constantly neurotic and on the verge of sleep half the time.
I would like to see Paul transform into Winky-Man in a possible sequel.
Where I've seen Paul Dano:
- The Girl Next Door
- Taking Lives
- The Sopranos
- Little Miss Sunshine
- There Will Be Blood
- The Extra Man
- Cowboys & Aliens
Winda Wester - Kristen Schaal
Winda is friend of Howard's and eventual girlfriend of Paul Same.
There aren't many actresses I could see as Winda and Kristen Schaal tops any of them to me. She's a natural comedian and her delivery is unique. She's not right for many comic book characters, but for this... she is perfect!
Where I've seen Kristen Schaal:
- Human Giant
- Mad Men
- Aqua Teen Hunger Force
- The Flight of the Conchords
- Get Him to the Greek
- Dinner for Schmucks
- The Simpsons
Lee Switzler - Alec Baldwin
Beverly Switzler's Uncle who owns a diner in Cleveland.
I think Alec Baldwin would really round out the cast, nicely. It would be a different kind of role and I believe he would know exactly what to do with it. He is a great actor and loves the Cleve!
Where I've seen Alec Baldwin:
- Beetlejuice
- The Edge
- Outside Providence
- Clerks: The Animated Series
- The Royal Tenenbaums
- The Cooler
- Along Came Polly
- Nip/Tuck
- The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie
- The Aviator
- Fun with Dick & Jane
- The Departed
- Saturday Night Live
- 30 Rock
Fifi the Duck - Monica Bellucci
One of Doctor Bong's humanoid experiments and slave.
I picked Monica Bellucci because I am in love with her. Fifi needs to be a sexually attractive anthropomorphic duck, dressed as a French maid. Speaking of which, Monica does speak French and I could really see her giving depth to a tortured character like Fifi. I mean, she's a slave for cryin' out loud!
The one other Marvel character I'd like to see Monica Bellucci as is Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, a S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent and love interest of Nick Fury.
Where I've seen Monica Bellucci:
- Malèna
- Brotherhood of the Wolf
- Irreversible
- The Matrix Reloaded
- The Matrix Revolutions
- The Brothers Grimm
- Shoot 'Em Up
