In this article I tell you what it takes for a Superhero film to not only be successful but actually a very good movie using examples from some of the greatest Superhero films out there!

The Villain needs to have his/her own adventure!

examples : Joker (TDK) Bane (TDKR) Loki (Avengers)

What made these villains so interesting is that you watched them embark on their own adventure and had just as much screen time as the protagonist. You need to want to see where the Villain will end up just as much as the hero. I believe this is where a majority of Superhero films fail however don't make their adventure/struggle more interesting than the heroes because that's where audiences wonder just who the movie is about.

Dialogue! Dialogue! DIALOGUE!

examples: Bane (TDKR) Tony Stark (Avengers & Iron Man)

I believe if your audiences leave reciting lines that were said in your film you've got a decent movie. I can't tell you how important characters lines are, that's what audiences are listening to. Bane had some of the best quotes I've ever heard because they were so dramatic and jaw dropping. What characters say should move the story in a straight direction, stay away from small conversation lines that has nothing to do with what is happening (Unless it's quick joke).

Annnnd... ACTION!

examples: Spider-Man 2 (Spider-Man vs. Doc Ock)
Avengers (Team vs. Chitauri)

The actions sequences are what most of the audience came to see so make it worth their while but be different. I believe the best action scenes take place outside in the day time where buildings are being attacked and innocent people are in danger. Now, I do enjoy a good a** kicking anywhere but something about a fight outside in day time is much more interesting.

There's more but these three are the most important aspects.

Not only did no one understand Bane, but it ended up not being his adventure. It was Talia Al Ghuls adventure. Just no one knew till the end of the movie because for no reason at all Bane lied to everyone he talked to.

How did lie? It was his story, reason he helped Talia was because of shared circumstance of seeing what happened to him happen to someone else.

As for not understanding, must ask: Was Darth Vadar difficult? Plus both claim couldn't understand yet heard 'his story' well enough.

Apart from that, actually key to make a good CBM, is same with anything else: Story, doesn't always need to be complex, but needs to work in getting the audience from A to B.

@avengers and cpbuff22 TDKR was hugely successful so the author has a point,in fact were it not for aurora and lack of 3d it would actually have made more money than the avengers.

JokerFanHAhaHA: You should know by now that they aren't going to be exactly like the comics. Especially someone like Bane.

Anyways, I don't see how people couldn't understand him because I could understand him perfectly for 98% of the time. Bane was himself spiritually and he was brutal like he should be. Tom Hardy gave a brilliant performance. Anyone overlooking that is clearly blind.

@jokerfan Aurora certainly delayed me seeing it for over a week. My brothers much longer in fact one of us still hasnt seen it.

But let me humour you, Even without aurora assuming it was in 3d , 3d adds 35% to ticket price in US. Abroad its more like 55%. if everything was done the same and it was 3d like avengers, TDKR would easily have made more, I think its worth pointing this out.

Hah, no one is talking about the article's content - so I'll be "FIRST!"
(I'm just being passive-aggressive, don't mind me)

Well, people aren't jumping at the chance to say your editorial sucked, so that's usually a good sign. I myself kind of wonder why you didn't include the other points that you suggested were there, but aren't as important.

Surely there's more to a successful MOVIE than character exploration, memorable dialogue, and daylight spectacles...

How about direction and pacing? I'm not even referring to the director, I'm talking literally. Where is the movie going? Does it pause and leave the audience kind of bored half-way? You need to think in terms of a heart monitor, or an EEG. If it flat-lines for too long, you're going to lose your hook.

@tonytony Tell you now, they don't make that much profit from 3D, atleast not at my cinema.

I have to agree with Tainted on this one. Your article needs considerable work.

I guess I should start contributing articles so I have more room to talk sh@t!
