Who is the ideal actor to play Captain America?

What if you had the choice to cast any actor as Captain America? An actor, who in his heyday, would be the ultimate embodiment of The First Avenger. An actor, from any period in movie history, who is ideal for the star spangled hero.

I have contributed my own share of actors to the list of candidates to play Captain America. I based many of my choices from research done on the internet and from choices mentioned on this site. Overall, my list was comprised of over 40 actors. We all seem to favour a number of different hopefuls. I now pose a question to you all: If you could choose any actor from movie history, who would you choose? My choice is Robert Redford. Imagine Redford calling "Avengers Assemble" or imparting wisdom to Spider-Man. He would be a natural (pun intended) leader.
I believe that many of the great actors like Marlon Brando (apart from Jor-El) or Paul Newman could lend themselves to certain comicbook heroes. Which other great actors and actresses can you envision as comicbook heroes or villians? Do you believe that Robert Redford, in his heyday, could be the ideal actor to play Captain America?

Out of all time, I'd say Redford of course.

A close second would be Brad Pitt back in his Fight Club days.

Okay, let me preface this by first saying I can see why he'd be a great pic, and secondly, acknowledging that my perspective is skewed because I'm highly political (Independent though) so I'm not looking to start an argument with anyone, I'm just expressing my view.

That said, I think there's a reason movie makers look for unknowns to occasionally carry a larger-than-life film. The reason is that even the most beloved actors tend to have baggage. With someone like Captain America, he is not only iconic, but also VERY CONSERVATIVE. He was frozen in time in an era where you stood up for your country no matter what, and there wasn't as much bi-partisan bullshit.

Therefore, I think you would need an actor whose presence is NOT associtaed with politics. Redford is somewhat political and liberal, which is fine, but I think it would be more benficial to have someone who is either non-political or conservative...preferably the former to avoid conflict.

It's not that I think that actors are not entitled to their opinions, it's that in our Jughead society, our fellow countrymen/lemmings would vote for the Moon if an actor or Oprah told them to do so, and I think it's tacky. I'd like to see entertainers entertain and leave politics at home.

My ideal would be Josh Hartnett. He's low-key actor who has played a military leader or hero on more than a few occasions. He could asthetically pass for the part and is about the right age.

brad pitt has the look, and decaprio might be able to play with his acting skill, but SAM WORTHINGTON is my over all pick. and ben foster to take over for the joker or the riddler.and topher grace for beak in x-men 4 or x-men first class, and chamber could be played by the guy who plays peter petrielly in heroes.

Durkin, politics does not belong anywhere near a casting decision..AT ALL. Actors..act! They are not playing themselves they are portraying another fictional person. Thats all that matters. If some idiots fail to separate that when watching an actor, thats their problem, I don't think that should affect any casting decision..and it doesn't for the most part thank God.

I would say possibly, but not holding my breath.

Ror, allow me to rephrase-You're right politics have no place in casting. However, in America, entertainers are seldom content with merely entertaining. They force themselves into the political arena and Americans follow them like puppies. I just want to see someone portray Cap, Dem or Repub or WHATEVER...just so long as they're not some kind of pretentious loud-mouth who confuse themselves with politicians...you understand? I mean you're Irish, Bono is a great example, he does all the humanitarian work a guy can do, but he doesn't talk shit about people or tell his fans whom to vote for. You know what I mean?

BTW...I'm affraid that some asshole would use the role as a soap box, that's why I said in my first post:

"It's not that I think that actors are not entitled to their opinions, it's that in our Jughead society, our fellow countrymen/lemmings would vote for the Moon if an actor or Oprah told them to do so, and I think it's tacky. I'd like to see entertainers entertain and leave politics at home,"

...which brings us to Josh Hartnett

I think 6of13's point is to an actor from any time. This would mean a YOUNG Robert Redford that would be free of some of the political baggage that an older actor can carry around.

Me, I vote for Steve McQueen to take on the role.

lol @ Durkin. Just because Hollywood is up to it's eyeballs in libnazis, doesn't mean that has to affect the movie or it's casting. It definitely shouldn't.

What possible difference could the personal affiliations of the actor make?

I made an Avengers cast a few months ago using the "If every actor ever was 30 years old right now, who would be in the Avengers?" Redford was my pic for Cap also.

Check out the rest right Here . http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/GulfCoastAvengers/news/?a=9825

Let me know what you think of the rest.

PS> Steve Mcueen is perfect for Matt Murdock

Yes, to answer your question there is no one who could ever step into Caps shoe like Redford.

Charles Bronson would make the perfect Punisher.

@Darth Mulder...I guess you and Ror are right...it comes down to this: I just don't want to see Cap exploited. Maybe I'm the one exploiting him by bringing up politics and I acknowledge that and will be more conscious from now on. But it's just that this is the LAST great Marvel piece and I want to see it done right.

There is something very important about Captain America that many people don't realize. he has gone against the American government what? like five or six times now? Gone off the range as a conscientious objector? Plenty of times.

Cap is an idealist. Above all what Captain America fights for is a set of principles he believes in, which are supposed be the principles upheld by the Constitution of the United States of America. If you wanted to put it in the simplest possible terms those principles amount to freedom and equality. So all the people that hate Captain A because they hate America, are missing something important about him.

@ Durkin: i too attach a great deal of importance to the Captain America movie. So much so that if I feel that that movie isn't handled well and it's ruined somehow like they have done so many others, then I am through. I'm done. I will quit, and turn my back on movies, comics, all of it. That's how important it is to me. So I feel ya on that

My internet is finally up again.
Hawks: No doubt that Bronson would be ideal for punisher. I checked out your casting - stellar work. Many of those actors could easily act the heck out those parts you cast.

LEEE: Cool. Alot will depend on Avatar. And then Clash of the Titans.

I cast Redford because I believe he would a great Captain America, regardless of his politics.

I'm a Redford fan..especially in Jeremiah Johnson.

BUT, I like John Wayne, circa 1939(see "Stagecoach")He IS Cap......

Love Steve McQueen, but not as Cap(even tho Steve was a veteran, USMC) McQueen, the King of Cool, would have been perfect for an early portrayal of the Flash(either one really, Earth 1 or 2).

Or, Imagine this, it's 1959, there's a new comic that's doing really good called the Justice League of America .A major movie studio options it to be made into a feature film....who would play the members?

My pick for an often overlooked JLA character....Steve McQueen as SNAPPER CARR!!

In 1959 I think Steve would have been in his early 20's and not a huge star yet....
