FANTASTIC FOUR: Chris Evans Reveals Why He Signed Up To Play The Human Torch

These days, Chris Evans is best known for playing Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but his first major superhero role came when he suited up as the Human Torch in 2005's Fantastic Four. He reprised the role in 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, but both films were critical and commercial disappointments, and he soon moved on from Johnny Storm.

During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Evans talked about why he agreed to play the hero, and shared his reaction to landing what was he biggest role of his career at the time.

"That was back when the superhero thing was just taking off," Evans explained. "For the most part, this was right on the heels of the Spider-Man with Tobey Maguire and the X-Men, so the superhero thing was just taking off. You try to remember the moments in your life when you get those phone calls to get a job and I’m ashamed to admit that I can’t always remember getting those calls.

That one I remember. There was a lot of other personal things. I think I had just been dumped. I needed a win," he continued. "I remember getting that phone call and just thinking, ‘Aw, yes!’ It was really a role that I enjoyed, it was the best paycheck I had ever gotten. It felt like a little bit of a corner had been turned and maybe I could parlay this into something else."

It's cool that Evans had a good time playing the Human Torch, and there's no denying that the Avengers: Endgame star was a highlight in both of those Fantastic Four movies. Playing Captain America obviously worked out much better for him, but his time as Johnny Storm was still memorable.

What do you guys think?

Johnny and Ben were the best thing in the FF movies. I hope they keep the same tone for those two in the MCU.

The first two Fantastic Four movies may have had their problems, but I feel they mostly did well capturing the spirit of the comics and characters (unlike a certain other movie). Looking forward to the MCU reboot, but I enjoyed them for what they were.

@WeaponXCII - They felt like a parody of the F4, I have a soft-spot for mid-2000s cheese. The tone of F4 in the comics is perfect for the MCU so am confident in the reboot, looking forwrd for casting news tho.

@WeaponXCII - I think that the same approach and mindset that were used in 2004 would absolutely work in some fine movie. It was another time, but now tecniques, tones and tastes are much more polished.

If you think about it, F4 were the most "ahead" movie of those first superhero outings. It was clumsy in its realization, but i think that it embraced perfectly the way superhero movies are done by Marvel today. Especially Rise of the Silver Surfer was really aware of the lore and, execpt for cloud Galactus, he was actually kind of bold to throw in all the Norrin Radd stuff, when we had black leather X-men and armoured Green Goblin because producers were afraid of comic book concepts and tones.

@FrankieDedo - Totally agree. I would probably throw in Blade: Trinity as far as early cbms capturing the current MCU tone (R-rating aside).

Galactus-cloud was a crime against comics fans, but they really nailed Norrin Radd. And I remember hearing (director) Tim Story say something along the lines of the real Galactus being at the center of the cloud, we just don't see him.
There are hints of this throughout:

If it wasn't for the fact that Dr. Doom was nowhere near as Dr. Doom as he should have been and showed his face way too much, I would consider my FF itch scratched.

FF was till apologizing for being a CBM, which was par for Marvel movies at the time except for Spidey. I enjoyed aspects of it and it was lighter in tone but still poorly done and compromised.

What kind of man or woman would ever dump this gorgeous hunk of babe meat?

The man is fully beautiful inside and out.

For shame, honey, FOR SHAME!

@GwenLantern - These type of comments are really disturbing. He's a human being not an object. Meat? Seriously? To judge someone you have never seen off camera as '' fully beautiful inside '' is a bit much. Chris Evans is a talented, handsome actor. That we know. From the interviews he sounds like a cool guy too. But only people close to him know how he is. And I doubt he would appreciate to be objectified like that. You sound incredibly thirsty.

People in 2005: F4's tone is cheesy, childish, not comics accurate and way too comical.

People in 2014: All hail MCU movies, GotG is the BEST MCU movie of all time.

@TheOtherOn -
Taika Watiti said something very cool about The Mandalorian. He said that they don't take it too seriously but they believe in it. The reason GoTG works is that there are real emotional stakes. FF was just a bad movie full of cliches and apologies.

You should try a little sugar on your Bag O' Glass breakfast.

Evans and Chiklis were just like early FF Johnny and Ben. I would have liked Johnny being a bit less shallow. It would have worked a little better if he seemed a little bit younger or if they showed he had a deeper side beneath the immaturity but as mentioned in other comments, they were the best parts of the movies, although they did go full-on with the SS. Shame the same couldn’t be said for Victor Von Doom and Galactus. The less said about Reed and Sue, the better.
