Max Landis Says, "My Version Of His [Reed Richard's] Stretchy-Powers Was The Most Badass Thing Ever"

Max Landis was recently a guest on Kumail Nanjiani & Emily Gordon's podcast (The Indoor Kids) and it was a fun episode. He talks about Batman, The Avengers, Spider-Man 2, and About 40 minutes into the podcast, the conversation turns towards his pitch for the Fantastic Four reboot

During the podcast he talks about both Reed and Ben Grimm/The Thing.  His ideas for Reed and his powers sound refreshing and definitely “badass” and crazy.  If you listen to the podcast on the link above starting at 40 minutes and 26 seconds, Landis does a much better job describing his pitch.

He says that he actually wrote a bunch of Fantastic Four and he’s a big fan.  His pitch was a “family on the run” and he wanted to “do a different thing, and turn the origin into it’s own thing instead of the first act”.

His pitch of the Thing is definitely out there.  His idea was that the Thing was transformed into a rock the size of a football that goes through the seven stages of grief.   His version actually had Reed carrying around the Thing for a lot of the movie.  Throughout the movie Reed would keep telling Ben
that “it doesn’t make any sense” and that Reed believes Ben was “converted into pure energy”.  Again, I think Landis does a better job describing this, but eventually towards the second act, Ben gets his body back after he crawls out of the rubble of a fallen building.  It’s during this scene that he realizes that “he can build his body out of anything, and keep growing” , which makes a “King Kong sized version of The Thing”.  He also says that this version of The Thing “could probably take on the Avengers" by himself, and that was part of his pitch to Fox.

He goes on to say how “Sue Storm can control light” and” Johnny Storm can “burn hotter than the sun”.  You can tell he has a really good understanding of the characters even though his ideas are out there.

The scene he describes for Reed sounds awesome,

“Reed is tied up, not tied up but special government restraints, but they needed to talk to him.  So, they take this thing off his head, and he attacks a guy with his nose, and then hits a guy, and
nails a guy to a wall, it was like John Carpenter’s ‘The Thing’, but not gory, he pins everybody to the wall using his face.”

He explains how somebody has to unlock him, and it’s a really comedic scene, there is really crazy stuff going on, somebody is actually wrapped up in Reed’s eye.  Obviously, this would be an extreme portrayal of Reed’s powers.

If you have a chance, give the podcast a listen, it was a fun episode.  What do you think about his pitch?  Are you on board with all of it, some of it, or none of it?

Batgirl from the 60's Batman show has passed away.

I'm sure a punch from Hulk or a Mjolnir strike would knock out Thing Kong. If not, Super-Iron-Man would have no problem.

With every 5 ideas Max Landis ever has, only 2 of them are ever good and the rest is him spouting gibberish on how his ideas are the greatest. This guy is such a douche.

Max Landis has great ideas and is clearly talented but man he's such an insufferable shit. I do appreciate him stating that he knows he's an asshole but still.

His appearance on the Nerdist a couple of years ago (where he pitches his Peter Pan trilogy) even had Jonah Ray, the most chill dude on that cast, annoyed.

I agree, I think he's a dick, and even though this seems creative, I'm not quite sure he would do the characters justice, he seems a little pretentious at that.

Landis has some really great ideas and some really weird ones, I'd like to see him get to write at least 1 major comic book movie, just to see what he could come up with.

Landis' Reed and Thing sound awful.

@PlasmaSnake Max Landis has 4 movies (including his directorial debut) coming out this year, he's defiantly not desperate for attention when American Ultra releases the attention will go to him anyway. Wrestling Isn't Wrestling was awesome btw.

I'd like to see him get to work with WB and DC, l feel like he could make a great Cyborg script. I also think he'd do a cool Captain Marvel script and a very interesting Martian Manhunter one. I don't think he'll get that chance, but I'd like to see him get the chance.

@typicalfanboy
instead of "K DEN" we should have a "D'Ken", former ruler of the Shi'ar Empire and owner of teh M'Kraan Crystal, when sub-par Xmen news comes up.

Better than any of Landis' ideas.

Honestly, I think these guys overthink Reed's powers way too much. He's not Plastic Man. He doesn't use his powers for flamboyant displays or epic fight scenes. In fact, he hardly uses them at all, except for fairly boring utilitarian purposes (and to not get killed when punched by super strong dudes).

I think the most effective display of Reed's powers should be followed by someone commenting that they "forgot he could even do that". Reed's most amazing attribute is his mind, not his body.

Fant4stic did a great job with Reeds powers,
In the short time they showed him of course. He was using it in combat, to travel around, it looked pretty cool.

And The Thing looked great in CGI. I likes that he emerged from a rock cocoon state.
But not the rest of this absolute sh** Landis is coming out with

Nice, haha. That's definitely a crazy take on The Thing, not sure if I'd be on board with that

I like the Reed scene, I think that could be really interesting, I can just imagine the music in the background, and the feeling of not knowing what was going to happen next would be cool

The is definitely out there though, I listened to some of the podcast, and Landis really does get these characters, he actually defends the Fantastic Four as a team too

It was a good listen

I'm not feeling that whole Kong Kong/Thing version. Sounds like he would turn into The rock version of Sandman in SM3.
