THE FANTASTIC FOUR: Julia Garner Cast As Silver Surfer In MCU Reboot

We had heard that The Fantastic Four might cast a female take on the Silver Surfer, and the trades are now reporting that Ozark star Julia Garner will play the Herald of Galactus...

Some major Marvel casting news here, as Deadline has confirmed a persistent rumor that The Fantastic Four will introduce a female take on classic space-faring hero, the Silver Surfer.

Emmy Award-winner Julia Garner (Ozark, Inventing Anna) will play the Surfer... but not a gender-switched take on Norrin Radd! Garner will actually take on the role of Shalla-Bal.

In the original Marvel Comics continuity, Shalla-Bal was the Empress of the planet Zenn-La, and was the first love of Norrin Radd. When Galactus came to devour their planet, Radd volunteered to become his herald in exchange for sparing Zenn-La.

Later, when Franklin Richards took over as the new Galactus, he imbued Shalla with the same cosmic powers and allowed her to serve as a twin herald alongside Radd.

Garner joins Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones, The Last of Us) as Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby (Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning) as Sue Storm, aka the Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things) as Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Punisher, The Bear) as Ben Grimm, aka the Thing.

There are rumors that both Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) and Mads Mikkelsen (Rogue One) are top picks to play Doctor Doom, but other actors are sure to be in contention.

Javier Bardem is still rumored to be the top choice for Galactus, but his schedule may prevent him from signing on.

Plot details are still a mystery, but a recent rumor claimed that The Fantastic Four will actually be set in an alternate universe. If accurate, this would obviously suggest that the characters will be Variants from some other part of the Multiverse that will eventually find their way to the main MCU timeline (possibly due to the interdimensional rift Dar-Benn caused at the end of The Marvels).

Kevin Feige has also confirmed that this will not be another origin story for the super-team.

“A lot of people know this origin story. A lot of people know the basics. How do we take that and bring something that they’ve never seen before?” he said in a 2022 interview, comparing this new take on the heroes to Marvel Studios' pact with Sony to bring Spider-Man into the MCU. “We’ve set a very high bar for ourselves with bringing that to the screen.”

Matt Shakman will direct the movie. Production is expected to get underway this summer, and the film is set to bow on July 25, 2025.

@CoHost - The funny thing is some folks that still believe that Disney is going to change course on what they've been promoting the last 7 to 8 years ....some really naive people. This new SW showing coming this summer is full on what this meme says and at this point I'm just here to watch Disney keep on keeping on with the tanking of the ship.

@jst5 - they objectively won't, because they still refuse to acknowledge the actual problem. All they'll do is remove sh!t like confirming Carol had a thing for valkyrie when south park makes a joke about their politics.

@incredibleTalk - you get 'Silver' isn't a dude's name, right? lol

@ducko - It actually kinda is:

"Silver is primarily a masculine given name. People named Silver include: Silver Donald Cameron (1937–2020), Canadian journalist. Silver Ezeikpe (born 1971), Nigerian athlete."

@CoHost - I'm not gonna even say the most obvious thing. We already know what the current agenda is all about. But since it seems like they aren't changing course all I can say is why cast this tiny little woman? Seriously are there no chicks with impressive muscular builds in Hollywood? They get the skinniest actors to play these roles. But the fellas have to basically eat steroids. If you're gonna put a chick in it and make it lame at least get a chick with a strong physique.

@ducko - I get why folk have an issue with this, however assuming the F4 film isn't in the prime timeline (and knowing we will get some form of reboot post secret wars) along with the prior live action Silver Surfer movie...

...having a one and done Herald in an alt timeline, that is a back door way to also set up the future appearance of her Partner Norrin, is better than having a Herald that could look too much like a female Human Torch with differing powers to Silver Surfer and no connection to Radd and better than messing up/not giving suffice development of Norrin Radd like in F4:RotSS in a film that will primarily be wanting to introduce us to this version of the First Family.

I would have prefered they avoid Galactus entirely for the first F4 film and DO want Norrin Radd done well at some point, preferably getting his own origin film/special...

...but if going there means they need not spend too much time fleshing out the character of the Herald, can have her be full villain if they want without issue, can kill her off and can still bring in THE male Silver Surfer more easily and more smoothly later and can even also include Norrin Radd and show why in this timeline he failed to take the place/save Shalla-Bal, for instance faces death trying to defeat Galactus rather than doing a deal for one life leading to his partner doing the deal he does on Earth prime to save his life. Then later we'll be aware of his powerset more and have some idea of his backstory even if in the main timeline he took the mantle to save his partner instead (with less issue that he did the deal as we know and understand how futile the other option would have been).

Again however I would have prefered they held off using Galactus in the first F4 film, would have prefered his first appearance was in a Silver Surfer origin film (which still would have meant another Herald before THE Silver Surfer took on the job) prior to heading for Earth. I'm just more willing than others to wait and see how this all pans out knowing this is the multiverse saga where variants are almost a given increasingly heading for a reboot of some form and may not be set in the MCU 616 etc. Also the same reason I would prefer Doom ISN'T the main villain of Secret Wars as prefer the idea that the bulk of the developments and arcs for Doom and Norrin is AFTER Secret Wars not before.

@Apophis71 - Well because it's not Norrin, it's a woman, and if she had been anything other than white that probably would have been the cherry on top. You're right about most everything else you said imo, it makes sense...which is why you're in the minority here.

@CoHost - if julia Garner has any sort of sense and values of peoples/fans opinions. Comic fans in particular. She would turn this role down amd let disney know, this is a man’s role.
MisterRiviera
MisterRiviera - 4/5/2024, 12:12 AM
@BeNice123 - Why is this a man's role? She's playing Shalla-Bal which is a female character. Not only that but in the comics she does become the Silver Surfer. On top of that it's taking place in an alternate universe. So what's the problem?

Huge huge fumble. Easy way to win disillusioned fans back onboard would be to go with a good exciting casting, instead they’re only gonna make them more disillusioned and add to the pile
Toonstrack
Toonstrack - 4/3/2024, 5:37 PM
@Cap1 - the disillusioned people aren't fans, they're grifters mostly
Cap1
Cap1 - 4/3/2024, 5:38 PM
@Toonstrack - i’m a fan, been disillusioned for years. Lots of fans of what the MCU used to be when Endgame came out are way over it
Toonstrack

@Cap1 - if you read comics nothing post endgame should have surprised you.
Cap1
Cap1 - 4/3/2024, 5:53 PM
@Toonstrack - so reading comics means I should have expected all MCU movies post Endgame (bar NWH) to be mid at best and steaming garbage at worst? It’s got nothing to do with surprise, it’s the fact their quality has plummeted to below sea level, with a slew of bad decisions to boot

Origame
Origame - 4/3/2024, 6:39 PM
@Toonstrack - yes, if you want a male character to be played by a male, that means you're a grifter 🙄

Guess you won't mind them casting Dakota fanning as blade then?
Origame
Origame - 4/3/2024, 6:42 PM
@Toonstrack - also, no. This is the "new" norrin. And we aren't getting the classic norrin. They aren't saying we're getting a herald of galactus other than the silver surfer. They're saying this is the silver surfer. And for someone talking about comics and what fans know, you don't seem to understand there's only one silver surfer.
Toonstrack
Toonstrack - 4/3/2024, 6:44 PM
@Origame - this is a female playing a female character tho.
FearTheLiving
FearTheLiving - 4/3/2024, 6:53 PM
@Toonstrack - Sure... Just like how we got the real Mar-Vell... Stop kidding yourself. MCU has zero interest to actually adapt shit at this point.
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 4/3/2024, 6:56 PM
@Toonstrack - That's objectively not true. There are grifters, sure.

But at this point I'd say there are more disillusioned people than not.

I want to be excited for this. I want Marvel to do well.

But they've been make some braindead decisions lately.
Origame
Origame - 4/3/2024, 7:02 PM
@Toonstrack - silver surfer (norrin radd) is not a female character.
