Earlier this week, rumours surfaced that WandaVision director Matt Shakman was being eyed to direct Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four reboot. Spider-Man: No Way Home helmer Jon Watts originally nabbed the job, but later decided to depart the project after a very hectic few years bringing the web-slinger to the big screen in his MCU trilogy.

Now, though, the trades have weighed in and confirmed that the director is officially in talks with the studio.

The expectation is that his involvement will be announced at next month's D23, an event where there have previously been rumblings about the movie's cast being revealed.

Shakman made a splash helming episodes of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia before heading to Westeros for Game of Thrones. Last July, he was announced as the director of next December's Star Trek 4, though we'd imagine he's no longer attached to that project.

It sounds like Shakman was the director to beat as his work on WandaVision inspired a lot of confidence from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. The show received widespread critical acclaim when it was released and later earned several Emmy nominations, including "Best Director" for Shakman.

As you can see below, the filmmaker beat out some impressive names, including Love and Monsters helmer Michael Matthews and Dog co-director Reid Carolin. Either one of them would have no doubt been a great fit, though we can't complain about Shakman given his past work.

Fantastic Four is set to be released in theaters on November 8, 2024.

I think I once said that Shakman would be a good pick, if Marvel wanted to replace Watts with a director they have worked with before. While he might not be my personal number one "fan casting choice" for the gig, I'm sure he will do solid job, if the script is good.

Let's hope he's not writing as well.

So much for Spielberg lol.

I'm glad it's not Watts, though.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - I didn't want Spielberg though. I didn't want Watts either. I'm still hoping for Brad Bird.

I’m here for it. Directed on of my favourite episodes of Thrones and had an impressive resume under his belt. People forget the Russo’s came from television also, and look how that turned out.
