Disney's INTO THE WOODS Featurette #1 With New Johnny Depp/Wolf Footage

Before it was cool to give modern spins on classic fairy tales, there was the Into The Woods Broadway musical. Eventually Hollywood would attempt a film adaptation, too bad it is happening at the tail end of the fairy tale-to-film craze.

“Into the Woods” is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Jack and the Beanstalk (Daniel Huttlestone), and Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy)—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife (James Corden & Emily Blunt), their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch (Meryl Streep) who has put a curse on them.

Rob Marshall, the talented filmmaker behind the Academy Award®-winning musical “Chicago” and Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” helms the film, which is based on the Tony®-winning original musical by James Lapine, who also penned the screenplay, and legendary composer Stephen Sondheim, who provides the music and lyrics. Produced by Marshall, John DeLuca, “Wicked” producer Marc Platt and Callum McDougall.

Starring Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Anna Kendrick and Chris Pine, “Into the Woods” is a humorous and heartfelt musical that follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.

Disney's "Into The Woods" is in cinemas January 2015

Gotta give it a chance with Johnny Depp, even if I'm not big on Disney

what is it with old fairy tales made into 60s family cartoons made into live action "dark" movies with weird color filters and cgi?

Definately agree with you about Moulin Rouge. I think it's a severely underrated musical. Sondheim's work on Into the Woods is phenomenal. He is an American icon and I'm glad his work is coming to the big screen. It's about time we see a film adaptation to Into the Woods. Depp will help carry it, he has experience with Sondheim with Todd, and the character acting that this entails, but the rest of the cast is stellar. Produced by the people that did Wicked, you really can't go wrong if you like musicals.

For those not familiar with the original, it was always dark. This is just a good time to bring it to screen.

I love Moulin Rouge, in fact my wife teases me all the time when I watch it. Plus Nicole Kidman is just gorgeous in the movie!

Just to clarify, Into the Woods (the musical) was produced on Broadway in late '87. This well before NBC's Grimm and ABC's Once Upon a Time. It predates Willingham's Fables by more than a decade. And if you wanna' get picky, it even beats Vertigo/Gaiman's Sandman, which had many tangental concepts, by a few years.

Disclaimer #1: This of course, is NOT TO SAY that Sondheim invented fairy tails. Duh. But what the musical seemingly began/started/invented was this baby-boomer trend to want re-imagined tellings of the old classics through a contemporary lens.

Disclaimer #2: No points for suggesting that Fractured Fairy Tales was the inspiration.
