For the live-action reboot of the How to Train Your Dragon, Gerard Butler will be making a return. Butler, who performed the voice of chief Stoick the Vast in the animated films, will play the character again in the remake.

The live-action remake is currently slated to bow in theaters, June 13, 2025. Due to this Summer's SAG-AFTRA and WGA strike, the film was delayed from its original March 14, 2025 release date. Currently, Pixar's Elio is set to also be released on June 13, 2025. Two weeks later, Disney's live-action Moana remake will also hit theaters.

The live-action version will be written and directed by Dean DeBlois, who directed and wrote the three animation How To Train Your Dragon movies.

Hiccup will be portrayed by Mason Thames, who most recently starred in The Black Phone. Nico Parker (Thandie Newton's daughter), who portrayed Sarah Miller in The Last of Us, will portray Astrid.

Based on the critically acclaimed children's book series by Cressida Cowell, the animated film franchise has grossed $1.6 billion worldwide for Dreamworks.

Hiccup, a young Viking who befriends Toothless the dragon, is the main character of the animated film. Long-standing traditions of warfare between dragons and vikings, particularly within Hiccup's clan, are placed in doubt when Hiccup discovers that dragons are not as scary as people think.

Hiccup and Toothless' blossoming relationship demonstrated in the film series,  has received praise for showing how an open mind can overcome prejudice and fear. The way Hiccup matures into a hero who defends his convictions in the face of opposition from everyone else is another reason why fans of the books and movie series love it.

How To Train Your Dragon Official Synopsis: A winning mixture of adventure, slapstick comedy, and friendship, How to Train Your Dragon rivals Kung Fu Panda as the most engaging and satisfying film DreamWorks Animation has produced. Hiccup (voice by Jay Baruchel) is a failure as a Viking: skinny, inquisitive, and inventive, he asks questions and tries out unsuccessful contraptions when he's supposed to be fighting the dragons that attack his village.

His father, chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler), has pretty much given up on his teenage son and apprenticed him to blacksmith Gobber (Craig Ferguson). Worse, Hiccup knows the village loser hasn't a chance of impressing Astrid (America Ferrera), the girl of his dreams and a formidable dragon fighter in her own right. When one of Hiccup's inventions actually works, he hasn't the heart to kill the young dragon he's brought down. He names it Toothless and befriends it, although he's been taught to fear and loathe dragons.

Butler is an awesome actor depending on the role but I feel like he kept doing the wrong stuff for so long post-300. The Has Fallen stuff is… fine enough, i guess but Plane and Greenland were both a lot of fun. Feel like he’d kill it in a conan-esque role. This casting is kind of a no-brainer though, even if the existence of a remake like this seems… superfluous.

@tmp3 - yeah I’d love to see Butler get a solid win.

And I truly hope this doesn’t end up in the same vein as the Disney remakes.

@JustAWaffle - The Disney remakes were such disasters, and I grew up with this trilogy so for now I’m expecting the worst but keeping some hope (for my boy Gerry, if nothing else)

This could actually have some potential as a live action movie. The animated ones are a lot of fun. Great decision keeping Butler on as Stoic. Did not realize that girl was Thandie Newton's daughter, but now that I know, I realize she looks almost identical to her mom!

David Harbour to play Gobber. I can see Harbour as the boys' coach.

I LOVE this series so I'm very against this movie being made but I do have some hope because the guy who wrote and directed the animated trilogy is directing this... let's hope for the best

So now that Disney isn't doing this live action, people want to be positive about it.

This is a great series of movies but I'm not going to see this and I hope it bombs. This live action remake sickness has ran its course.

Adaptations between mediums I can understand but this is just studios regurgitating their stuff so they can make easy money. [frick] it.

@EgoEgor - I’m with you with the live action remakes. Not a big fan of this one. Dreamworks just needs to continue putting out good content.

@EgoEgor - Agreed. Many of them are unwatchable. The only one I remotely enjoyed was the Little mermaid. Come up with some new content.

@EgoEgor - I’d prefer a 4th in the animated series to this absolutely unneeded adaptation.

@EgoEgor - I actually support doing live action adaptions of films if the original animation was based off of a book collection. And there’s a bunch of stuff they had to cut from the animation due to cartoon adaptions being more “kid friendly.”

There’s a tone of stuff they could do with this in live action if they pull it off correctly. However, the fact they’ve got the same creative team behind the animation and now actors - yeah I’m siding with you a little on the regurgitation for money point.

It was always strange to me how they gave the viking culture a Scottish accent and music, except the kids that all had American accepts.
RealTurner

@mountainman - It's mentioned in the commentary as a creative choice. All the adults speak in the "old way" and all the kids speak differently. Not sure I love it either but it's something they thought about--even if, in the end, that's just an excuse not to have Scottish accents on the kids.

mountainman - 1/6/2024, 9:55 PM
@RealTurner - I think the bigger concern is a Scottish over a Norwegian accent. I guess that Scotland was at one point conquered by the Vikings so that could be a justification.
