SCOOP: Epic Concept Art From Alex Proyas' Defunct PARADISE LOST

Today, I came across artwork that was created for Alex Proyas' cancelled film, Paradise Lost. The ambitious movie, that would've starred Bradley Cooper as Lucifer, was scrapped over a year ago due to budget concerns. Now, come marvel at what could've been.

In February of 2012, Legendary Pictures finally pulled the plug on the big-budget movie, Paradise Lost. The film was a big screen adaptation of John Milton's 17th century poem. Director Alex Proyas ("The Crow") had planned to use the most advanced 3D and motion capture technology to bring the biblical saga to life. But, in the end the budget concerns were too complicated to overcome. Legendary tried numerous times to rework the numbers to get it below $120 million, but it was too daunting a task. At the heart of the issue, was the enormous amount of visual effects that were required for the celestial battles, that involved massive aerial warfare.

Official Synopsis:
Lucifer and Michael, God's greatest archangels, share the bond of extraordinary friendship until God produces his greatest creation: Man. Unable to remain subservient to God if it means bowing down to humanity, Lucifer begins his dark descent and is cast out — only to plot his revenge.

For me, this is one of few projects that I was really upset about when it was abandoned. And who wouldn't? You can't help but wonder what could've been when you look back at that impressive cast, like Bradley Cooper as Lucifer, Benjamin Walker as the archangel Michael, Casey Affleck as Gabriel, Diego Boneta as Adam, Camilla Belle as Eve and Dijmon Hounsou as Abdiel, the Angel of Death.

Let's not get to down, I do have a treat for all of you. I happened to come across some outstanding artwork that was created by conceptual illustrator, Brian Matyas. Enjoy!

As non-Biblical as this is, I would actually like to see this movie.

So it's the dumb action movie version of how God casts Lucifer down into Hell. No thanks.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939, well, it's wasn't supposed to be directly based on the bible. It's based on a poem that was based on the bible.

It's a shame the film was scrapped because they couldn't get the budget down to $120M, which is all Legendary were to spend on it.

The designs are beauiful and all, but they dont seem to fit the story IMO.They look like an angelical Iron Man, rather than angels...

(anyway, it's all concept art, I know, they could have ended up looking absolutely different, but you can se where they were headed)

^agreed, too much like Iron Man....way too futuristic-looking for the War in Heaven!

Still, I wish this was happening...they could have used Mike Carey's Lucifer comics as a blueprint.

I always wondered why this movie came in over budget, but look at that! Mo-cap/CGI? They could have easily dumbed it down to a 300-like movie with no one the wiser, but instead overshot the mark. A shame.

This movie was going to be EPIC!!! I was really down when the movie was scrapped. It had a bunch of talented actors, and the story was awesome. It's like the bible mixed with superheroes. I hope they can get the budget and get this project off the ground. Especially with the same cast. Just imagine watching this in IMAX 3D. Maybe as fans we can do this movie like the Veronica Mars movie. Donate some money, I really want to see this.

They do look too futuristic, but they're great designs nonetheless, and I think the final product would've been excellent. Damn it, how I wish it hadn't been cancelled.

Artwork looks cool. I was very upset when I found out this was scrapped. The casting was looking very good and you could tell they wanted to do something special.

JEEZ! I never heard they were making a movie based off it! Dang it! That cast.... Holy crap. This would've been (no pun intended) Biblical.

Wow... I think all the Angels' armors are supposed to shine bright, like how Zeus' armor was in the "Titans" movies. This concept is something new in a biblical film sense, and I love it. I was really looking forward to this movie, too.

I was so disappointed when I found out this movie was not getting made. The plot alone got me to get the poem. These pictures just prove to me that this movie should have been made.

And Djimon Honsou (clearly the last design is meant for him) would've been really awesome as Abdiel.

I always pictured an organic/deathly, stark/colorful look. It would only fail to live up to the Milton work if it were to be made into an action film though.
