WONDER WOMAN 1984 Star Chris Pine Joins Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley's DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS

We've known for a while now that a Dungeons and Dragons movie is in the works, with one-time helmers of The Flash, Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (Game Night), attached to direct.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Wonder Woman 1984 star Chris Pine is in talks to join Paramount Pictures and eOne's long delayed big budget take on the classic board game. Goldstein and Daley recently finished rewriting the movie's screenplay, but plot details are top secret.

However, as the trade explains, "the game is known for its wargames, treasure hunts, campaigns, camaraderie, and reversals of fortune, all in a setting that combines humans, elves, orcs, and wizards. The game famously uses multi-sided dice in gameplay and is overseen by a host known as the Dungeon Master."

There's obviously no word on who Pine will play in the movie - the previous draft of the screenplay was penned by Michael Gilio - but this won't be the first time the franchise has been brought to the big screen. In 2000, New Line adapted it for a poorly received effort starring Watchmen's Jeremy Irons.

Warner Bros. was once working on a version starring Baby Driver star Ansel Elgort, but Paramount (a studio with a production and distribution deal with Hasbro) is now intent on turning it into a money-making franchise.

The potential is certainly there, but if Warcraft proved anything, it's that it might not be an easy movie to make. With Pine possibly taking on a leading role, though, we're definitely intrigued.

Please take this seriously. D&D has such a huge, interesting world to dive into with films. But one bad movie can put this franchise back on the shelf for another 20 years.

Just take it seriously and start with a fan favorite. Doing an Icewind Dale movie with Drizzt Do'Urden, Bruenor, Wulfgar, and Cattie Brie seems like a no brainer that would be easily accessible to all kinds of people without being too weird.

Then once that succeeds they could jump into other things, like Elminster and the Red Wizards of Thay. But audiences NEED that big push to jump start it. D&D has a reputation of being as nerdy as things get, which is a bit of a joke considering Lord of the Rings is no less nerdy but was a giant success.

If they take it seriously and try not to make it a joke, it should do well.

@TheDoctor1225 - Thats my fear. Because for some reason they just can't seem to make a D&D movie or show without it being super hokey and "funny". Which makes no sense because literally NONE of the novels are like that. For the most part the novels are all pretty dark and grim.

Hopefully its not a generic fantasy movie, most fantasy movies without material to base them on are usually terrible

They better cast black/Afri-Am actors for the dark elves or else there will be some racism/whatever-ness backlash/problems. If they don’t, then Netflix and Hulu needs to bring back COMMUNITY S02E14 back 😡

Really like the names involved. Wonder how they'll pull this off though. I'm not sure how they're gonna make it work though, but I got faith in them

Deadline describes it as a "film that will feature an ensemble cast and take a subversive approach to the game."

No idea what that means, but I'm game for something fun. The one nice thing about it is that they don't have to cram way too much lore into it as with things like "Warcraft" and the like.

I'm placing bets on Pine getting a pilot cameo in Jenkin's 'Rogue Squadron.'
