Another Review For Green Lantern Hits...And Once Again, It's Not Good!

As you can see in the article below, Total Film didn't enjoy Green Lantern all that much, and now another site has weighed in with their opinion on the movie, and it once again isn't really all that flattering...

Things aren't looking too good for Green Lantern so far. We've only had a couple of reviews (I strongly advise checking out RorMachine's article below with the "Total Film" take on the movie) but here is what Village Voice had to say about it. While they don't rate the movie, it's pretty clear that they weren't too impressed by the latest superhero movie to hit the big screen! Of course, there's no need to panic just yet! These are only the first couple of reviews, and even Thor and X-Men: First Class had their fair share of these! You can read the full review by clicking on the linl below.

It’s 10 minutes before a human character appears on-screen in Green Lantern, a personality-free franchise-launcher that builds toward a quaint, if explosive, argument in favor of the nebulous quality of "humanity."

Via a heavily CGI'd prologue, we learn that The Universe is patrolled by a group of fearless, multi-species warriors called The Green Lantern Corps––and, yes, each member is issued an actual old-school camping lantern, which they use to recharge the clunky rings that allow them to harness “the emerald energy of willpower” to “create what you see in your mind.” A new threat known as the Parallax—illustrated as a constantly morphing mass of something like flesh blended with rock, almost an Anselm Kiefer construction anthropomorphized—has managed to kill four members of the Corps, including an arrogant purple humanoid alien who crashes on Earth and uses his last breaths to command that his ring seek out his replacement.

I could easily fill pages running down the plot obstacles that Lantern director Martin Campbell soullessly cycles through; identifying all the characters introduced by the film's four screenwriters, only to be easily disposed of; and "explaining" the complete hodgepodge of psychological cause-and-effects, from the pervasive daddy issues and complete absence of mothers, to the arbitrary, less-than-convincing confidence issues that Hal is able to surmount as soon as it becomes clear that Carol really wants to kiss him. But the movie never bothers to suggest that any of that really matters: Campbell’s ADD style privileges spectacle over story—so much so that the film never rewards the viewer for even trying to keep track of what is going on.

So you give up, and instead try to grab on to the small pleasures, which momentarily distract from the fact that the narrative is nonsensical, the characters so boilerplate that their every action seem preordained from the earliest frames, even as the action on-screen is often incoherent. Sarsgaard, with a major latex assist, gives a grand camp performance only rivaled in the last 12 months by Michael Sheen in Tron: Legacy. While hardly even registering as a villain, the Parallax is a breathtaking visual idea––roasting its victims alive while simultaneously slurping up their flesh, the entire maneuver rendered as a lacy spray of golden fire and charcoal ash.

This is pure cinematic magic, but the motives of the menace are muddled if not completely opaque. And while Reynolds isn’t a sharp enough actor to really find the crackle in his standard-issue superhero wisecracks, his body is a marvel of precision sculpting. As he breathes in and out in the skin-tight, digitally enhanced Lantern suit, each abdominal muscle seems to pulse independently. It's transfixing––and the closest Green Lantern gets to character detail.

With an all star cast which includes Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, Blake Lively as Carol Ferris and Mark Strong as Sinestro, director Martin Campbell's Green Lantern is set to be released in 3D on June 17, later this month!

Village Voice didn't like Thor or First Class either. I think they're a little more artsy (or so they believe.)

"Thor's a bore"

"Lacking a single memorable joke or striking image, First Class is as perfunc-tory and passionless as would-be franchise resurrections get."

I'm fully aware this isn't going to be a masterpiece of cinema. All I want is an entertaining flick, and I believe I'll get that.

Uh, lemme tell you about the Village Voice's movie reviewers, they mostly cater to independent and artsy fartsy types of movies i.e. Black Swan and Brokeback Mountain. They ususally don't like superhero movies. Here's a fun fact: I remember them totally sh-tting on the first Spider-Man movie and look how that turned out. The same will be said about the Green Lantern and I know that movie will rock the socks outta people.

But alas, despite this, this is really gonna give these Marvel loving haters something to howl about. Nice going Village Voice. Oh btw, I usually ignore anything Rormachine has to say since we both have very different taste in movies.

I refuse to read any article based on a movie that includes a fan-made image instead of an official one. So it's hard to take her review seriously when she can't even do her job properly.

If anybody actually reads reviews & listens to what critics say...then they are all are [frick]in stupid.I've never listened to what a critic has ever said in my entire life, because usually they are a bunch of idiots that just don't get it anyway. We as individuals are our own critics.I make my own decisions and I'll make my own mind up on how it is and won't let any stupid critics ever sway my decision.I don't like anymore people losing jobs in this economy, but critics are one business that I wish would go out of business!!!

@Gaston

I think she might be talking about the fact that Abin Sur likes push his ring to the brink before he recharges it. Maybe that has something to play in how Parallax kills Abin.

it sounds like her problems are with the source material. "they all go around with thier old school camping lantern" "recharge the clunky rings", "hal is arrogant and hard to root for"...umm that describes hal to a T. Its all about the daddy issues with no moms in site (feminist much?). again that is directly from the source material....the problem is she obviously doesnt take the genre seriously and thinks its all a joke and wants it to conform with her idea of a movie and not follow outdated source material. As pointed out she gave thor and first class horrible reviews as well. she has no credibility in this genre.

Hrmmm. Well, this is exactly what I was expecting. Green Lantern isn't exactly the most down-to-Earth or relatable superhero in comic book lore, and I knew that as a result, few people would be able to just jump into it without having any prior exposure to the character. This is a movie that's probably not going to have much appeal to anyone BUT fanboys, which means it probably won't end up doing fantastic business.

But at least they finally made this one, damn it! I'm not going to let the disinterested moaning of the uninitiated keep me from enjoying this film, which looks pretty damn cool in my opinion! So it may not do well at the box office and it may not convert many people into fans, but I'm going to enjoy the hell out of it anyway!

(Then again, this IS just the Village Voice-- I never listen to what these people have to say, anyway!)

While I don't respect her opinion all that much (mainly because she also negative towards Thor and X-Men: First Class) this IS the only review currently on 'Rotten Tomatoes' and she's listed as "Top Critic". Not a good start. :(
