Martin Campbell And Ryan Reynolds Briefly Address The Negative Green Lantern Reviews!

Director Martin Campbell comments on the negative fan reaction to certain aspects of the movie such as the costume while Ryan Reynolds comments on whether he thinks the critics stop the movie getting a fair shot...

While neither were asked outright what they thought of the negative backlash towards Green Lantern, both the director and leading man were quizzed by The Los Angeles Times at the premiere last night about whether or not they think the fans and critics stop a movie like this from ever having a fair chance. Campbell meanwhile once again shared his thoughts on 3D (he still doesn't seem too keen on it) and Ryan Reynolds answered a few questions about his next movie, R.I.P.D.

With an all star cast which includes Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, Blake Lively as Carol Ferris and Mark Strong as Sinestro, director Martin Campbell's Green Lantern is set to be released in 3D on June 17, later this month!

Obviously you can't please everybody. But making a "good" movie is half the battle. They should have focused on that instead of... i don't know what the [frick] they were focussing on.

Josh- Hey bud, could you put their quotes in writing? Damn workplace with no speakers.

Am I the only one who always felt like for a Green Lantern movie to be taken seriously it needed to be in the realm of "The Matrix" movies. Many similarities in the Characters of Hal Jordan and Neo. I could have also saw Oa being something like Zion. I feel Hal Jordan and Neo share a basic/universal story....a man who is chosen because of a greatness that is seen inside of him.

The tone should have been the same also...."Matrix" to this day seem to be the only CREDIBLE off the wall sci-fi movie. I think people where drawn to the sense of urgency the story had. I wish people would take the characters more seriously...as hero's the sacrifices their lives for [frick] sake! Can we at least sacrifice some effort for a thought provoking story.

@Gmoney84

I saw it last night; it's not great but certainly better than 2 out of 10 (which is what RT indicates). It could have been much better if the story what more thought out. You'll find my thoughts here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1133985/board/nest/184210928?d=184210928&p=1#184210928

@AreTudaEDub
The problem with Green Lantern is not the sci-fi elements; that's what works and indicates the potential. Rather, it's the flaccid and boring middle section on earth where Hal has more than 3 conversations with Carol about his personal fear. Over all, Hal spends more time talking with Carol throughout the movie than he does all of the other Green Lanterns combined.

I think the recent Star Trek film was a credible sci-fi movie and much closer in subject and context to that world than that of the Matrix. The Matrix didn't become a hit until its DVD release. Even if you disagree, Star Trek demonstrated that a mainstream audience doesn't have a problem accepting sci-fi movies as long as they're entertaining and reasonably coherent. Hopefully, the wider audience will disagree with the critics so that an improved Green Lantern sequel will be made. It'll be tough because the conventional superhero narrative and the central, earth-bound stuff drags down the whole movie.

I don't trust critics! And now ppl still wanna bash the film off of complete bs! Why can't ppl just be happy wee getting the damn movie instead of complaining! And yes I'm a Dc fan and a Marvel fan.So bcuz ppl got what they wanted myself included you wanna throw a hissy fit? I'll say it once, How many cbm's can you name that critics hated to no degree but WE all loved and made a great deal of money? And honestly I can say 1st Class was a film that I had no expectation's in and I like I'm sure many of you came out surprised while I'm sure others came out pissed off,(and I don't blame them) It still made and continues to make a great of $! So enough with the bashing and no I'm not a troll by any means.Im grateful to finally get a GL movie

If U let bad reviews make up ur mind without seeing the movie urself U need to re-revalute urself as a true comic book fan or as Stan Lee says "True Believer." On that same note if U r a person looking for everything wrong with a film and to go wrong with this film because it is a DC character U really need to re-evalute ur self as a comic book fan. Real comic book fans go see and judge for themselves.

I luv DC & Marvel but I am not into every character from both labels but I go see their movies & will continue to. It seems like yesterday films such as Spider-man & Transformers got ran down by critics & those two films became to of the greatest ever.

I also remember when fans sent threatning emails and letters when Bryan Singer was hired to direct X-men in 2000 & the film became a success.

True CBM fans give movies a chance and the only critic opinion that matters is yours, remember that.

@marvel72, well said, good comment :)

@billiondollarplayboy07 - Maybe because Thor never dropped to 19% on RT. That's probably a good reason why.

The hypocrisy of some of these DC fans and GL apologists is overwhelming. A lot of you sure love to use critics when they are trying to prove a point on their favorite movies though.."TDK is at 94% on RT, so it's the bestest CBM ever." lol

@billiondollarplayboy07

& I also respected Ryan Reynolds interview, he is a true professional, people give him a hard time but back inthe late 80's people gave Michael Keaton a hard time when he was cast as Batman/Bruce Wayne but when they saw Batman, they praise Keaton because he for one deserved it & two he deserved the same chance other actors have gotten & that is what acting is transforming into another person.

I think Reynolds will do a terrific job as Green Lantern/Hal Jordan. Like he said DC is backing him & that is good enough for me :)

@Intruder

Ok I apologize....I don't mean the ONLY crediable off the wall sci-fi movie.

But ....you know what...ok. I mean, I really started to read Green Lantern Heavy during the Rebirth (Before then I was into Aquaman sub-diago arc. But I just felt like the pictures and story in Rebirth had a huge since of gravitas. I feel like Star Trek was good but more so tough in cheek. Star Trek was good but it ... it's almost to infitie of a story if that makes any sense.

Matrix was A heavy [frick]ing concept: Intellectual, action packed and serious. Just like how Rebirth and on has been. I will let the movie fly but there is so much potential in the sequal w/o a [frick]ing reboot. They need to get to Kyle and take shit serious.

@ Intruder - has a point, if the reviews where high dc we be talking shit, but the same goes for marvel so it's a wash.

As I mentioned in other threads, my personal opinion from reading a few reviews. Which I don't care for them, critics are those that can't make it in the big league (movies, movie business) But I'm getting the feeling the time for the movie isn't right so it sounds like it was crammed up. The actors didn't do a bad job, especially Ryan. A few said he had great Hal Jordan moments and a few RR style moments but he contained it. At the end the movie will make it's money, 2nd will be made and the suits/studio will learn from it's mistake from the 1st one. A new director, that's right for it will take it and the movie will be about 2 hours long. That's my foreseeable future on GL.

Also like I mentioned before this style of comic book flick is also being watched closely by Marvel. Because also wants to tap into their Sci-fi side imo so Marvel fans should hope it does well
AreTudaEDub
AreTudaEDub - 6/16/2011, 7:18 AM
@blueorangeny - I highly doubt Green Lantern is going to influence what Marvel Studios have planned in the future. Feige already talked about tapping into the "cosmic side" for a long time ago and it's being brainstormed on as we speak. Nova, Warlock, Inhumans.. Whatever it is they will approach it a lot different than what WB has done, either Green Lantern is a success or not. People seem to be forgetting Thor was basically a "Cosmic CBM" that involed interstellar travel, super technology and alien species. And it turned out pretty well.

I don't do fanboy denial, not since Return of the Jedi turned out to be so shit when I was a kid!

Green Lantern currently tracking 24% rotten on Rottentomatoes site. Only film currently lower is Honey 2 at 6%!

The only three reviews so far from AintItCoolNews regulars Nordling, Quint and Mr Beaks all gave it the thumbs down as a massive disappointment and not even a good film!

7 external reviews posted on this site: Digital Spy, Empire Online, HitFix, The Hollywood Reporter and The News of the World all gave it extremely low marks out of 5..

Digital Spy - 2/5
Empire Online - 2/5
Hitflix - C
The Hollywood Reporter - No score
The News of the World - 1/5

UGO.com's Jason Hoffman gave it a mostly positive review, but then this guy gave the recent biggest flop of the year, PRIEST an -A when the rest of the world called it stillborn and audiences left it for dead at the box office.

Variety gave it a mixed review with the bad outweighing the good!

Village Voice gave a review that was largely unflattering!

Total Film had this to say in its verdict "In a summer stuffed with superheroes, this underwhelming offering will likely leave you jaded. How it could have used some of Thor’s charm and The Green Hornet’s chutzpah."

SuperheroHype gave it 5.5/10 and had this to say in closing "There's sure to be someone out there in the cosmos who enjoys this take on Green Lantern--small children and those without overly-critical tastes in entertainment--but it just fails on so many levels, both as a movie and as a comics adaptation, that it's easily one of the bigger disappointments of the summer."

This is a fanboy only affair, only they will willingly part with their hard earned cash and see an obviously bad movie twice let alone once! They'd better hope the Ben10 generation latch onto this and save it some face at the box office this weekend or there will be no green pastures for a sequel!

I agree with Ryan they really aren't giving the movie a chance which to me isn't fair. Half these critics don't know jack squat about the character.

Birthright76- "Why can't ppl just be happy wee getting the damn movie instead of complaining!"

Um what??? You want us to be happy to get a shitty film? How does that even come close to make any sense at all??? Uh... how'bout no? How about we'll be happy to get some [frick]ing respect given to addaptations of our beloved comic books, when we actually get it. Does that sound okay to you?

D117- And what about the other half that do know jack squat and still shit on it? How could they all be wrong just because you feel bad reviews aren't fair? Some had shitty arguements, yes. But most were on the money with what they weren't happy with, which were things they should have nailed given the awesome source material they had to work from. When you have actual fans voicing their disappointments, it goes beyond the average film critic.
