Martin Campbell Talks About Green Lantern and the Superhero Movie Craze

In a brief interview, the popular director discusses what attracted him to helm Green Lantern, why comic book movies have become hot commodities and his future with James Bond

News from the Green Lantern movie set has been at an all-time low this past month; most likely due to the continuously leaked set pictures and film details that have been hitting the net since mid-March. Green Lantern fans need not worry, though; with San Diego Comic Con around the corner, it's only a matter of time before a plethora of official media reaches our eyes and ears. Until then, we'll have to make due with the tidbits of information that get disseminated.

In a recent interview with the Hindustan Times, the film's director, Martin Campbell, discussed his attraction to Green Lantern, why it's different to other superhero films and his feeling that the Hollywood comic book movie obsession is merely a coincidence:

How different [is theGreen Lantern film] from the comic book series?

"..I'd never done a superhero movie before. His powers are psychological. They're to do with 'will' and the enemy is the 'fear', as opposed to Superman who sort of runs into a phone box, gets the old spandex on and off he goes.

"This is going to be different from other comic book series because we have made a very different and an original story out of the character rather than just taking it from the comic book."

Do you think Hollywood is on a comic book adaptation spree?

"Yes, a lot of people are making superhero movies, but I'm very excited about my first superhero movie. If I am not wrong, superhero movies have always had a wide audience. Maybe it's just a coincidence that a lot of these movies are being made at the same time."

Campbell also directed two successful, and separate, re-launches of the James Bond movie series; GoldenEye, starring Pierce Brosnan, and Casino Royale, starring Daniel Craig. Fans of the long-running film series shouldn't hold their breath that Campbell will return for another one, though:

"First of all it was a delight to work on both the Bond movies and quite an experience to work with both Pierce and Daniel. As of now I have no plan to direct a Bond film. I think I am done with it for now. But then never say never, one doesn't know what one does in future."

While the next James Bond movie installment seems to be locked in developmental hell, Green Lantern is already 2/3 through their production schedule and has a tentative theatrical release date of June 17th, 2011.

Thats the first statement I've heard about this film that I'm not sure I like.

The only thing that keeps this from being close to better than THor is cause Blake Lively is in it.

He must have meant, never say never AGAIN with regard to the Bond series. Also, one reason superhero movies are on a role is because effects final caught up with them.

If Green Lantern is good Marvel needs to steal this guy away and get him to do Nick Fury/Shield. Say... he kinda looks like 616 Nick Fury.

When Hollywood has turned all our favorite comics into movies and reboots, the next big thing will be the live action anime movie. Akira will probably be the first "Blade" for that genre.

Well if Batman counts as a Superhero, Zorro does too ;) And what an awesome superhero film that was! One of my faves for sure!

StevilNYC- Either Akira or Batle Angel.

@ StevilNYC: There is a live action Akira movie slated to come out 2013. It's a Universal production and so far Leonardo D is tied to it with nothing set in stone.

Am I the only one mortified by this statement:
"..I'd never done a superhero movie before. His powers are psychological. They're to do with 'will' and the enemy is the 'fear', as opposed to Superman who sort of runs into a phone box, gets the old spandex on and off he goes.

Well, yeah, of course its the money. BESIDES the money is what I meant. There has always been a cash cow there, but now its easier to milk due to decent effects.

@Shaman - DUDE! Is he trying to give us a heart attack? WTF? No CBG wants to hear the sentence "Never made a comic book movie before" and "very different from the comic book" coming out of a director's mouth! WTF???!!!

Sounds like GL fans are getting worried, to me it seems Marvel is on the ball more than DC. I worry how this one will turn out.

@mclovin that photo ranks up there with The Human Centipede

Did they replace Grif? I'm not that worried about the "very different from the comic book" statement as there are a few versions of GL's origin and that they're including many of the weirder looking aliens in the GL Corps. Campbell can put out good stuff.

@MassExecutions- Also, there's not that much script development needed because many of the story elements are already there.

have they revoked Robert Green's passport yet? He should be banned by the Queen from ever stepping foot on English soil.

@ Bman - exactly

"Campbell: I think so. You learn by degrees. You know, when I first took on the job, I did it because I’d never done a superhero movie before and secondly he’s just…he’s a psychological character. His powers are psychological. They’re to do with will and the enemy is fear and so on and so forth, as opposed to Superman who sort of runs into a phone box, gets the old spandex on and off he goes. So he’s a much more complex character and also again, it’s the origin story, which again is the Carol Ferris character, Carl Ferris. There’s Sinestro, Kilowog, Tomar-Re. All these characters and all who appear in the movie. So it’s such a kind of eclectic range of characters and also it’s the only superhero to go to another planet, so you’re creating at least another world that…and none of them do."

THIS IS THE SAME SHIT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT TO COLLIDER BACK IN JANUARY!!

Notice how there havent been many Blake Lively photos, I wonder why, maybe to disguise her bad hair dye job

@mclovin Its a movie called The Human Centipede, very disturbing and that was just from the trailer

And I was watching the US-England game in Victory Plaza, and it was packed.

@ claybo - oh yeah! It's a foreign flick right? My friend watched it and she said she will be traumatized for life! She's actually a hard core chick who likes punk rock music and horror flicks and she was absolutely mortified by it.

Is it me or is DC behind Marvel by 5-10 years (to quote Tony Stark)?

@mclovin Yeah it is I got mortified by just watching the trailer, even the Movie Buzz guy got mortified by it and he really doesnt, its literally disgusting, watch the trailer at your own risk

@ claybo - thanks for the warning bud. Btw, it's not just you. Considering that DC has had a very nice head start (1978), they are probably 15 yrs behind now. In the next 3 yrs We are looking at the following from Marvel: Thor, Cap, Reboot of Spidey, a X-men prequel, Wolverine Sequel, Avangers and Iron-Man 3. What's DC doing? GL, Batman 3, Superman reboot and ??? God only knows if they will get a Flash movie out.
claybo4131
claybo4131 - 6/15/2010, 10:20 AM
@mclovin That spidey reboot I wont see its epic fail.

Yeah DC had a great head start in 78, 80, then tailed off with the other Superman movies, then Batman in 89, 92, 95, then wrecked it in 97, but all they ever did was Batman and Superman, Marvel keeps rolling them out.
