Neville Page Talks About Creating The Live Action Green Lantern Corps!
The prolific concept, creature and character designer discusses bringing the alien characters to life on the big screen as well as his work on Kilowog, Tomar-Re and Sinestro...
On Bringing The Characters To Life On The Big Screen:
"Because there's such a fanbase for it already there's an expectation that you have to honor making sure that you are fair and true to the interpretation, but the challenge is that some of the core ideas that are in the comic book are so wacky, so bizarre. I remember looking at one of them that looked like a piece of sushi with a Green Lantern logo and I thought if that's gonna be one of mine I don't know how we're gonna pull that off. But there were a few where it just made no sense how we were going to make it plausible and real and live in the same world as the humanoid characters. It works in the cartoons and the comics, but to stick it next to Kilowog, who's going to be our Na'vi in terms of the execution, Tomar-Re, and a few others?"
On The Characters That He Worked On:
"Kilowog and Tomar-Re I was involved a lot with, but character designer Aaron Sims and his company and a few of the artists were very instrumental in those. Myself and Tully Summers, another sculptor and designer, worked on the Corps. I know Tully has his favorites, and I have to be careful to say one that we doesn't know is gonna happen onscreen. When Tully and I were doing these we wondered why are we doing so much character and why are we doing the level that we're doing it? This is a background quick scene. And after awhile I realized this is probably gonna be merchandise. We're designing maybe the toy line versus the movie, but it really was that scene for the fans where the camera pans across the crowd and you see all your favorite ones, 10% of all your favorite characters come to life."
On Whether He Was Involved With Creating The Look Of Sinestro:
"No, usually we interface with makeup. On Star Trek I was designing with Joel Harlow our Romulans. Initially, yeah, I was doing Sinestro and some of the other looks, but Joel Harlow's team again they ran with that. I think they were having to do what we were trying to do which is be true to the franchise and execute it on a great actor like Mark Strong. It was such a great cast."
