The First Green Lantern Review Is In

Total Film magazine has posted it's verdict on DC/WB's Green Lantern which is out this Friday. What do they make of it? Click to find out..

Ok, let me start by saying that this isn't much of a review in my opinion. It's basically a couple of paragraphs on the story and how Green Lantern isn't Thor.. No performances are so much as touched upon, and really, I will be waiting for something a little more in depth before taking this guy's word for it. But, it is one of the first reviews to hit so here are the "highlights" from it..

“Are you ready to have your mind blown?” asks Ryan Reynolds in Green Lantern.

It’s a leading question that lays down the gauntlet for Martin Campbell’s belated intro to one of DC Comics’ second-tier crime-fighters. Put a line like that in your script and it practically requires you to be mind-blowing. Unfortunately, Lantern isn’t.
.....

It’s instructional to compare and contrast with Kenneth Branagh’s Thor, the last attempt to alchemise a lesser-known property into box-office gold. That movie, you’ll remember, started off on Planet Earth, putting down roots before flashing back to fantastical Asgard.
.....

Thor, you’ll recall, was also a swaggering upstart brought low by hubris. Over the course of Branagh’s film, however, he learned enough maturity to re-acquire his powers.

Jordan, alas, is a bit of a tool who – bar an unlikely third-act conversion to noble warrior – stays a bit of a tool. He is, in short, a hard guy to root for, even when having his clock cleaned back on Oa by a rhino-like alien with the unfortunate name of Kilowog.

Oa, incidentally, is a deeply unimpressive realm: a vast CG screensaver that feels as false and phoney as Reynolds’ CG super-suit.

Parallax, too, fails to cut the mustard, even when made flesh in the form of a bulbous-headed Peter Sarsgaard.

The result is a film that’s all set-up and no pay-off: an origin story for a hero we don’t much care for with an elaborate lore we have zero interest in, toplined by a star who’s little more than a torso and a smirk.

Verdict:

In a summer stuffed with superheroes, this underwhelming offering will likely leave you jaded. How it could have used some of Thor’s charm and The Green Hornet’s chutzpah.

And they give the movie 2 out of 5 stars. For the full review click the link below. It's never a very good sign when embargos are placed on movies up until so close to their release date, and unfortunately that seems to be the case here. Maybe Green Lantern isn't up to much, but I'm sure you will agree that this isn't much to go on.

HAHAHA at the part where it says Thor learn humility. He learned absolutely nothing in two days and did nothing to learn it either. There should be a school to learn how to write reviews cause this is absolutely not a review.

not to defend..but Hal is suppose to be 'still' kind of a tool even after he gets the ring...he is like that in the comics that's part of his character.

Thor DID learn humility in trying to pickup his hammer and not being able to, realizing he wasn't worthy. I don't mind this review. I'll still see the movie, but Green Lantern isn't that great of a hero. And reviewing part of the FX, being that they're IN THE MOVIE, is a valid point, it's like anyone sayin', "godzilla in the remake looked so fake, it made the movie horrible.." valid point.

It's a terrible review no doubt, but that doesn't mean he is wrong. There are other negative ones. Oops! I was hoping for a great Summer for CBMs.

this line right here just makes the entire review biased and pointless. why review a movie you dont care for.

If anybody actually reads reviews & listens to what critics say...then they are all are [frick]in stupid.I've never listened to what a critic has ever said in my entire life, because usually they are a bunch of idiots that just don't get it anyway. We as individuals are our own critics.I make my own decisions and I'll make my own mind up on how it is and won't let any stupid critics ever sway my decision.I don't like anymore people losing jobs in this economy, but critics are one business that I wish would go out of business!!!

So...this is more about his dislike of the characters and comics themselves, and not the movie. No one calls Kilowog's name unfortunate, ya poozer!!

Keep in mind even the best CBMs get bad reviews. Also keep in mind that such masterpieces as X-Men: The Last Stand got possitive reviews! Go figure.

Reviews this early in the piece don't mean jack. Go and see the film for yourselves guys!

Thor got bad reviews from new york times, ebert, movies.com, chud. Doesnt mean anything, its just people who are foreign to comics tend to not like them.

MarkCassidy - 6/14/2011, 4:56 PM
lol, Jor El you just said all critics are idiots, and then admitted that we are all critics. That mentality is ridiculous. Critics are just people with opinions on movies that happen to be in a position to share them with the public. Some have better taste than others, some are better writers than othersetc etc , but they are just giving their opinions same as you would be with a buddy in a bar after seeing a movie. I listen to some of the ones that I find to be on a similar wavelength, but to dismiss all of them like that is just nuts.
JorEl77
JorEl77 - 6/14/2011, 4:58 PM
Critics just don't get comic book movies that's why.I thought Thor was pretty damn epic,I'm sure Green Lantern will be too,and I'm pretty damn sure Captain America is gonna be pretty damn badass too.[frick] the critics, they can suck my ding dong!!!

"Professional" critics always hate sci-fi type movies. I don't trust them as I never agree with them. I will wait til a CBM editor writes a review after they have seen it. Most of the regular reviewers are pretty good. Looking forward to seeing RorMachines and Josh's reviews.

hmm ghost rider, xmen 3, spiderman 3, elektra, howard the duck, punisher 1, punisher war zone, fantastic four, fantastic four: rise of the silver surfer, blade trinity, xmen origins: wolverine, daredevil, blade(55% on rottentomatoes), blade 2 (59% on rottentomatoes) Hulk, incredible hulk, iron man 2. Ya marvel gets a ton of movies but most of em are awful. Only recently have they been doing a good job.

I mean the people that get paid to be so called critics. My point is we are our own critics & we can make our own decisions.I just don't pay attention to what they say, kind of like politicians, because usually everything they say is a bunch of bullsh*t.If someone told you to jump off a bridge would you do it?Probably not,you could make that decision on your own.
