Welcome, to this Rant/Review of Guardians of The Galaxy 2!
Directed by James Gunn, featuring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel.
Further statements will be based on my opinion and MY opinion only. Now, let’s get into it!
So the first thing that i really liked is the villain, Ego the Living Planet. He was charming, his motivations were down right creepy ( it is basically of him finding out his purpose / Ego wants to be one with every planet in the galaxy and all life forms). He had some weird motivations, yes, but they really did fit for him and his belief of him being a god. Altough, he was a little too clichée at times. I felt like his bonding with his son is really heart-warming but at the same time i feel like Star-Lord is smarter than this. Why would he accept so rapidly the task of being an immortal being? I also don't get the fact why you would tell your son that YOU gave his mother cancer. Wouldn't that make him angry at you and make refuse to be associated with you in ANY WAY? That's stupidity, right there. And they paint him as a smarter being. And don't tell me it's to showcase what he had to sacrifice for the Expansion. He could've just said something along those lines: "Your mother was the love of my existance, Peter. But sometimes, to accomplish your life's purpose, you must give up the things you love. I had to leave for the reason i was born. Now, let us start our purpose, the Expansion!" I know, i know. How would Peter free himself form Ego's grasp? Gamora, the love of his life convinces him that this isn't his purpose, this isn't his sea...... His love for his friends, for her IS his sea. Not the Expansion. And then, Peter snaps back to life, realizing what he would have to give up. Of course, it would leave some changes to the movie (and I’m not a great writer in ANY WAY, so yeah). I loved Quill's sacrifice at the end, he becomes human once and for all. He sacrifices immortality for what he sees as his familly.
One thing that i hated was the forced comedy. Yes, yes, I know this complaint was used a lot, but it really is frustrating at times. When you have scene where Nebula talks about killing her sister and Kraglin makes a joke, why? Really, Kraglin makes a joke after hearing a traumatizing story about Nebula's childhood. Another example is when Taserface dies. He contacts a Sovereign lady and she laughs at his name before he dies....... I legitimately cringed. You have some great emotional scenes and then they are ruined by crammed in comedy. And the amount of sex, poop and pee jokes..... Why? Some were amazingly hilarious, but others felt so uncomfortable and unneeded. Some of the writing was spectacularly bad….. I’m looking at you “You don’t know anything about me, loser”….. Come on, Rocket! Sounds like a 8 year old’s clapback. Overall, the cracks went from good to bad…..Especially Drax's jokes.
Speaking of him, i feel like he regressed as a character. He felt idiotic and not as badass as the Drax in the first movie which enrages me because i liked him in the first one. He had cool moments, though. His relation with Mantis was very touching and him comparing her to his daughter made me go “awwww”.
One thing that i liked was the element of familly and fathers, and how Yondu was more broken down in this sequel and felt like an amazing, emotional and humorous character. And his connetion with Star-Lord as a father and Rocket as similar people. Which made his sacrifice very impactful. Even though, his emotional scenes with Rocket seemed kinda forced and convenient.
( HOWEVER: Why did the Aero-Rig, A chest-plate with jet-boosters on the back that allows him to fly, Star-Lord wears one in the final battle aswell. stop? We can assume that it's the same tech that Star-Lord uses to travel in space, where his tech that allows him to fly doesn't freeze. So why would Yondu's arrow ring freeze? Does someone knows why? And i think it's kind of weird also that Kraglin and Rocket did not wait for them above the planet. Couldn't these bunch of a-holes just wait for them in orbit of 5-10 mins? Maybe it was because of the planet’s blast radius and they were worried about that)
Nebula was okay? They had good ideas for her, but the execution was a little bit weird, in my opinion. She wants to kill Gamora, has the chance to do it and then stops because all she ever wanted was a sister. Okay, she wanted a sister, not a person that beats he up, but why didn't she kill her when she had the chance, it was what she wanted, right? Weird on the execution. But, maybe she still loved Gamora.... Deep down, through all this hate, was just a damged child looking for a sister……… Even if she tried to shoot her five seconds ago. And i don't know how Yondu is okay with her, all of a sudden..... She shot you and helped people kill your crew..... You saw her. SHOOT HER ON SIGHT, YA SOFTY BLUEBERRY!
A weird thing that carried over from GOTG 1 is: When you have a clear shot on Yondu, why don't you take it? I mean, you can kill him, before his arrow hits you, since it's already killing another pack of people. I didn't get that. The visuals and CGI go from good to weird in this film (especially a scene where Drax shoots the useless gold people's ships in space, a bad shot complimented with less than stellar visual effects. Or even Groot's CG at times), but they pick up near the end. Especially Ego, who’s is a PHENOMENAL, visually speaking. The color pallette is vibrant and gives way for great imagery.
The OST and Soundtrack in this film is GREAT! I loved hearing it in IMax theaters! It was epic, triumphant and sad at times. It was a blast!
I missed some things but: overall, i think the movie is mixed. There are some GREAT parts and emotional sequences that i love, but it's ruined by some forced comedy, non-sense and incoherencies. What did you think about the movie? Sound off below!
