GOTG VOL. 3 Director James Gunn Says He Couldn't "Legally" Work For Marvel Again Even If He Wanted To

James Gunn has directed movies for both Marvel Studios and Warner Bros., but since he became co-CEO of DC Studios, it seems he can't "legally" return to the MCU...

When James Gunn was originally fired from the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie after coming in for significant backlash for a series of resurfaced Tweets, he made the jump to DC to helm The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. before being rehired to finish Vol. 3 for Marvel Studios.

Of course, Gun has since been enlisted to run DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, which appears to have essentially ended his working relationship with Marvel/Disney.

On Threads, Gunn was asked if there was any chance he might write a fourth Guardians movie or the planned Star-Lord spin-off, and the filmmaker made it clear that he could not "physically or legally" work for Marvel Studios while acting as co-CEO of DC Studios.

This isn't exactly a major surprise, but a lot of GOTG fans hoped that Gunn might return to the franchise in some capacity down the line. The director has already confirmed that he has little interest in helming a potential Vol. 4, but the last movie did leave the door open for another instalment or spin-off, including the aforementioned Star-Lord project.

Gunn did recently address that final "The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return" title card on Vol. 3's Blu-ray commentary.

"Oh, but not quite over. We always want to give somebody a little something special. And Chris and I, forever, have talked about how great it would be to be able to do a 'Legendary Star-Lord' movie, a story with Star-Lord on Earth trying to adapt to the environment of Earth in the same way that somebody else might try to adapt to the alien environment of outer space. He's a fish out of water in just kind of regular water. So I can't wait to see it."

Short of the revamped DCU proving to be a massive failure (who knows what could happen in the current box office climate), Gunn will likely be involved in the development of various DC-based projects for quite a long time, so we can probably forget about a return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the foreseeable future.

How would you feel about more GOTG movies without Gunn at the helm? Drop us a comment down below.

"In Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past." "Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them."

Gunn writes and directs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, and Maria Bakalova. Kevin Feige is the producer and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Nikolas Korda, Simon Hatt, and Sara Smith serve as executive producers.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now available on Digital platforms and Disney+.

Y'all making it seem like he could NEVER work for Marvel again. When he's done at DC he can always run back to Marvel

@TheShape9859 - Yeah, but it'll be 10+ years just to finish out the entire first slate of films/television for DC. and if it's mostly successful? Gunn will have a job for the next few decades.

@TheVisionary25 - LOL now I imaging James walking into Marvel and getting past a few guards and front desk folks and then he makes it to the elevator, only for it open and Feige pop out. "F UCK!" lmao

Most large companies have non compete clauses in contracts. Why would WB allow him to simultaneously work at Disney. This isn’t shocking and mirrors what many other employment contracts stipulate.

for all we know, Disney had something similar in place, but it would have been voided when they fired him.

When I saw the headline... "James... what did you do? What blackmail do you have?"

When I saw the actual post... oh thank god, it's just another Gunn W.

Makes sense.

Also , I feel like that Legendary Star Lord idea Gunn & Pratt had might work better as a series or special presentation (it does sound like it could be funny & interesting to see Peter deal with just regular human life)…

If not then you could use that as a launching pad of him feeling bored on Earth which leads to a new adventure for him in a potential movie.

@TheVisionary25 - think a special presentation would be most fun to watch. Maybe have him start working in a home for elderly people after his grandpa moves there, only for him to find Steve Rogers there.

But jokes aside, I do hope Star-Lord shows up when they do Annihilation. A United Front with Nova, Captain Narvel, Star-Lord, Gamora & the Ravagers, and Rocket & the new Guardians would be great to see.

Would love to see Cillian Murphy return in 28 years later. Cant wait to see how that world has evolved in the 28 years. And I really wonder why they skip out on 28 months.

@HammerLegFoot - My question is when they will eventually do the obligatory prequel like every other horror franchise has. I mean, what's next? 28 decades later?

He easily did 3 of the best MCU movies so far. I think he did more than enough if he can't give us a fourth film.

I want to see a movie where Star Lord is coming out of the cinema (or at home watching) and his reaction to the disappointing Transformers, Ninja Turtles, G.I Joe, reboot Robocop, Ghostbusters 2016 movies. Thunder Cats Roar and other movies/shows from the 80s that have been butchered.

When his DC plans crash he will go back to marvel. If it ain't his plan then it will be zaslav selling and another corporation having different plans. Either way it's gonna crash

@AmazingFILMporg - As an enjoyed of good media I hope they don't crash and burn. Genuinely want more good content not less

If it does though he could go back after his contract ended.

@AmazingFILMporg - "When his DC plans crash"

Let's just stick to "if" for now. Chances are it crashes and Zaslav sells, but I think Zaslav chances are better than he ever had with DC since Snyder.
