GOTG VOL. 3 Star Will Poulter On His Unique Take On Adam Warlock - SPOILERS

The version of Adam Warlock that we met in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was quite a bit different to his comic book counterpart, and Will Poulter has now weighed in on his unique take on the character.

After being teased in one of Vol. 2's post-credits scenes, Adam Warlock made his MCU debut in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and it's probably safe to say that this iteration of the mega-powerful Marvel Comics character wasn't quite what fans were expecting!

Warlock makes a big impact early on when he infiltrates Knowhere in an attempt to retrieve Rocket for the High Evolutionary (who created the Sovereign), but is ultimately defeated by the combined efforts of the crew.

When he returns to his master, we learn that Adam is... not the fizziest bottle in the fridge!

As it turns out, the High Evolutionary "hatched" Warlock from his cocoon too early, resulting in a highly formidable being without the emotional maturity required to wield such power.

"It’s clear that James was putting a certain twist on Warlock," actor Will Poulter tells GQ Magazine. "In this movie, he’s in his infancy. He’s come out of the oven early and isn’t fully baked. He’s trying to orient himself in a world where there’s a lot of pressure to work out the difference between right and wrong. That was a really fun place to explore because there was the opportunity for drama and comedy in that. Warlock’s character typifies what I love personally about 'Guardians,' which is that these characters are funny, but they all feel psychologically genuine."

Warlock ends up saving Peter Quill's life when Groot gives him a second chance, and is part of Rocket's new crew of Guardians in the movie's mid-credits scene. We assume the character will return at some point (if not in a potential Vol. 4 then possibly in Avengers: Secret Wars), but if there are plans in place for Poulter to reprise the role, he's not saying!

Check out a new image of Warlock's furry pal Blurp - who is also, technically, a new Guardian - below.

"In Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past." "Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them."

Gunn writes and directs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, and Maria Bakalova. Kevin Feige is the producer and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Nikolas Korda, Simon Hatt, and Sara Smith serve as executive producers.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now in theaters.

His take was good. And I think it's obvious now he wasn't supposed to be a large part of this film. But he's established now. So let's see what lies ahead for him!

Gunn adapting to the fact that Warlock obviously wasn’t supposed to be a huge part of this film and having him be an infant was a cool idea. At times, I thought he was a tad too naive but it makes narrative sense. And fits the world Gunn crafted.

Didn't love or hate him. He was middle of the road to me but another creative taking over his character is what I'm excited for💪🖖🔥💯🤝

I enjoyed his portrayal quite a bit, though realizing that he's basically meant to be the new Drax (ie, a very powerful lunkhead) was kind of a bummer. Still holding out hope for a new set of adventures down the road, after (presumably) Star-Lord's solo outing (which, man, I can't imagine being less interested in anything.)

I haven't seen the movie yet so I can't comment on his performance as Warlock other than based on what I've read about it so far, but it makes sense overall. Aside from the fact that he "wasn't fully baked" when he was hatched, you'd think that any sentient create having just been "born" would have a considerable lack of maturity and naivety, particularly when it comes to higher level concepts like good and evil. I think that it would have been a little harder to believe if he had come out of his cocoon with the fully formed acumen and mental/emotional mature of a fully grown adult, particularly because a lot of that is gained through the experience of living, which he didn't have at the time he was hatched (and it would have been a considerable stretch to assert that the High Evolutionary somehow imbued Warlock with all that during the creation process.

One other aspect to this could be that due to him having been hatched early could be what ultimately leads to his mental break and ultimately becoming Magus, which could very well be the plot (or part of one) in a future GotG movie. This would be a relatively new foe for the team to have to face: one where he was a trusted and even loved member of their GotG "family" and they have to take him down. Too bad we won't likely have Gunn around to do something like that because I think he could REALLY nail the emotional aspect of that, especially after really establishing the "family" connection in this movie.

I went to see Guardians Vol. 3 twice in the theater and have absolutely zero issue with Adam Warlock and how he was interpreted. And I'm a huge fan of the comic character. Why? Because to me, this is only the start for the character. We were NEVER going to see a Warlock as his Celestial Jesus interpretation on his first introduction. Especially NOT in Gunn's final film with the Guardians. I'm just happy the character is in finally in live action. It will be up to how Marvel Studios uses the character in future projects that will determine his overall arc. And I'm fine with that.

I'm also looking forward to seeing how future Mantis is handled. I wasn't originally on board to her being an alien but it has worked out well the more we see her. Making her half-celestial, allows Marvel Studios the set up to possible doing a Celestial Madonna story which is probably Mantis' biggest storyline.

I don't know what Marvel Studios cosmic plans are outside The Marvels, but I'm looking forward to seeing how Marvel handles the future of these cosmic characters and that includes the Eternals and the aftermath of their film.

I thought he did a nice job of conveying the character's infancy without turning him into a total punchline.

He was just there, he could have easily been replaced with any other henchman but I guess marvel are laying the foundations for something greater. My biggest issue is his suit. It looks horrible 🤢

Warlock might’ve been the biggest disappointment of this film. Still a good movie but man was he just underused and insignificant to the plot.
