GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Concept Art Reveals Andy Park's Different Take On Star-Lord And Mantis

Marvel Studios concept artist Andy Park has revealed some alternate Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 designs for both Star-Lord and Mantis revealing drastically different looks for both heroes...

As is always the case with sequels, the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has slightly new looks for the sequel, but some new images from Marvel Studios concept artist Andy Park have revealed that Star-Lord at least could have looked a lot different. As you can see, Peter Quill would have ditched the red costume we've grown used to seeing him in in preference of a cool new blue outfit. Who knows, it's entirely possible that Star-Lord could rock this sort of look in Avengers: Infinity War or Vol. 3!

However, by far the most interesting thing here is the early design for Mantis which envisioned Ego's "pet" as a more bug-like creature, but Gunn has since said that the prosthetics just didn't work.

What do you guys think of these alternate designs for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? Do you wish Marvel had gone in this direction instead? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

Cool artwork for Mantis, but it wouldn't have fit her innocent personality in the film.

@MrDandy - you can't make that assumption

@osideous - It's not an assumption, it's an opinion based on personality and visuals, and I'm perfectly allowed to an opinion, thank you very much!

That is one nice coat for Star-Lord.

That Starlord reminds me of the DnA run Starlord. That's all I ever want in the movie.

Minor spoilers

With Starlord's helmet busted, perhaps he'll get an ungrade and get the visor portion of his helmet added on.

@Benjamitesandwich - That's what I think might happen.

@Benjamitesandwich - As someone who saw the movie, I didn't see his helmet get busted. That would explain why he couldn't do to Yondu whay he did to Gamora in vol. 1 (pass it back and forth). Wow, everything makes sense now...

@BrettMan - Ego knocked Peters helmet off in the ending with his weird blue tentacles.

@Benjamitesandwich - There's concept art for the helmet for the first film. One of the artist explained that they didn't go with it because it made starlord look like a villain.

Which is a shame because the art makes him look [frick]ing cool.

Hopefully thats closer to the look we get for Starlord in A:IW. Not 100% Sure the helmet is needed but a nice nod to it would be fun

Draw calling that Mantis ugly would be far less funny.

@Chewtoy - It wasn't that funny to begin with...they really forced the humor from him. I mean...jeez. How many times did they make him break out into loud, forced laughter?

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie for what it was...just dumb fun...but some parts annoyed me
Omegacron
Omegacron - 5/15/2017, 1:23 PM
@Pathogen - The forced laughter was on-purpose, that's Drax trying to blend in with the rest of the group. The whole point is that he laughs at stupid stuff that isn't funny. He doesn't understand humor, but he's trying to act like he does in order to fit in.
Pathogen
Pathogen - 5/16/2017, 10:41 AM
@Omegacron - You misunderstand. I was saying they were forcing that joke. We got it, the first time...they beat it to death. It wasn't that funny the first time, and it only got more annoying.
I think I could have worded my reply a bit better and said "break out into loud laughter" as it was the writers trying to force us into finding the humor in that situation again...and again...and again. Yawn

Those both look dope as. Maybe in the next one she'll go in a cocoon or some insecty shit and come out looking like that, (SPOILER ALERT!!!) and then Drax is finely sexually attracted to her.

They should have went with that design for star lord

Starlord is awesome. Mantis not so much.

I really like the late 70s version (original) of Star Lord where he traveled solo with "ship", probably my favorite black-and-white. Would love to see MCU take that direction after guardians run, but I doubt it.

I actually like Mantis here. She seems more threatening.

I liked her in the film but she was played for jokes maybe a rad too much. Hope she beanies the kick ass martial artist she is in the comics, in Volume 3. I'd like a balance between her being naive and her being a real physical threat combat wise.

Spock0Clock - 5/15/2017, 12:47 PM
@BlackBeltJones - It's something like 4 years between Vol. 2 and Infinity War, so it'd make sense for her to be much more skilled. After all, up to now she's only really been Ego's live-in nurse.

Star-Lord looks a little too close to Cap in AOU.

Would look great if all the Guardians had a similar get-up as in the DnA run.
