BOX OFFICE: WORLD WAR Z Kicks Off Domestic Run With Better Than Expected $3.6 Million
Despite the fact that many seemed to delight in predicting that Marc Forster's World War Z would be one of the most notable big budget flops of 2013, the zombie thriller has kicked off its North American run with an impressive $3.6 million opening on Thursday evening. Read on for more!
World War Z has been received quite favourably by critics (it currently has a score of 68% on Rotten Tomatoes) and looks set to perform a little better than expected at the box office if these early numbers are anything to go by. According to studio estimates, the movie took a solid $3.6 million at late Thursday night showings and should earn upwards of $50 million during its opening weekend in North America. Internationally, it opened with $5.7 million, giving it a current worldwide cume of $9.3 million. However, despite these impressive numbers, World War Z - which has a budget of $190 million - is unlikely to take the top spot. That honour will instead go to Monsters University after the Pixar prequel earned $2.6 million yesterday evening. Stay tuned for further updates.
The story revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself. Enos plays Gerry’s wife Karen Lane; Kertesz is his comrade in arms, Segen.
