Variety is reporting that Paul Rudd (Avengers: Endgame; Ant-Man and the Wasp) has joined the cast of Sony's upcoming Ghostbusters sequel, which has Jason Reitman (Tully) attached to direct. Further details on his role were unavailable, but it's believed that he'll be portraying a school teacher.

Following the casting, Reitman shared the following statement to express his enthusiasm, “I’ve been wanting to work with Paul Rudd since my short film opened for ‘Wet Hot American Summer’ at Sundance. I’m thrilled he’ll be joining this new chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe.”

On a related note, the long-awaited true sequel to the original duology is now operating under the new title Ghostbusters 2020.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the film is said to follow a younger cast of ghostbusting heroes as they battle a new paranormal threat to the world. A single mother and her family will be at the center of the story with Carrie Coon (Avengers: Infinity War) playing the mother, Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) playing her son and Mckenna Grace (Captain Marvel) playing her daughter.

Additionally, original cast members Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver have been rumored to reprise their roles, but no confirmation has been provided by the director or studio just yet.

Reitman also co-wrote the script alongside Gil Kenan (Monster House). Production is expected to begin this summer with a July 10, 2020 release date already set.

Jason Reitman hasn't impressed me with too many of his works aside from Thank you for Smoking. I'm hoping this could be the Ghostbusters movie that could finally be on par with the original, as for now that movie still feels like lightning in a bottle.

But i'll never say no to Paul Rudd, dude improves every movie he's in.

I did not know he directed Tully, interesting.

Paul Rudd will make this movie extra enjoyable. He would also make for a fun Ghostbuster.

I can imagine him as Egon's son.

@Repian - How does that work? Maybe an illegitimate child I guess. I know Rudd is an ageless wonder, but he would have been about 15 during the original and no signs pointed to Egon having a family.

@inkniron - Maybe not a "family" in a traditional sense. But Egon is totally the kind of guy who would have had children for research or pragmatic purposes.

Egon in college: The sexual partners in Group A will be the control. I will have no contact with their children. I will visit the offspring produced in experimental Group B only on their birthdays. Group B-1 will receive presents. Group B-2 will not. Children in experimental Group C will be visited by a different man each year, each one claiming to be their father, to see what effect this has on parental bonding.

Also Egon in college: There is also some chance I'll need a compatible organs when I'm older, so having as many children as possible ensures the highest likelihood of willing compatible healthy donors.

So Paul Rudd's character just has all these stories about how he thought his father was some kind of secret agent that changed his face every year, and then in his mid-30's he gave him a kidney.

@Spock0Clock - im pretty sure all likeability for egon would be gone if what you just said was made canon.

I still think they should have gone with the Extreme Ghostbusters characters with Ray replacing Egon.

I've heard they already started pre-prod here in Calgary and might be using the upcoming Stampede event as part of the plot.
