Variety is reporting that Paul Rudd (
Avengers: Endgame;
Ant-Man and the Wasp) has joined the cast of Sony's upcoming
Ghostbusters sequel, which has Jason Reitman (
Tully) attached to direct. Further details on his role were unavailable, but it's believed that he'll be portraying a school teacher.
Following the casting, Reitman shared the following statement to express his enthusiasm, “
I’ve been wanting to work with Paul Rudd since my short film opened for ‘Wet Hot American Summer’ at Sundance. I’m thrilled he’ll be joining this new chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe.”
On a related note, the long-awaited true sequel to the original duology is now operating under the new title
Ghostbusters 2020.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the film is said to follow a younger cast of ghostbusting heroes as they battle a new paranormal threat to the world. A single mother and her family will be at the center of the story with Carrie Coon (
Avengers: Infinity War) playing the mother, Finn Wolfhard (
Stranger Things) playing her son and Mckenna Grace (
Captain Marvel) playing her daughter.
Additionally, original cast members Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver have been rumored to reprise their roles, but no confirmation has been provided by the director or studio just yet.
Reitman also co-wrote the script alongside Gil Kenan (
Monster House). Production is expected to begin this summer with a July 10, 2020 release date already set.
