Production is now officially underway on Sony Pictures' follow-up to Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Afterlife director Jason Reitman - who will move to a producing role for this latest instalment in the franchise - shared a behind-the-scenes photo with the caption, "back in the Firehouse," confirming that we'll be returning to the team's iconic base of operations for this follow-up.

Reitman is pictured alongside Gil Kenan, who will be taking over directing duties.

A rumor did the rounds claiming that the sequel's official title was "Ghostbusters: Hell's Kitchen," but this now appears to have been debunked.

Plot details are still under wraps, but after moving the spooky adventures to a more rural setting for Afterlife, it's been confirmed that we'll be returning to New York City in the next movie.

Main cast members Carrie Coon (Callie Spengler) Finn Wolfhard (Trevor), Mckenna Grace (Phoebe), and Paul Rudd (Gary Grooberson) are expected to return, but it's not clear if Ghostbusters OGs Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson will also reprise their roles - although the latter does seem like a fairly safe bet after the last movie's post-credits scene.

In the stinger, we saw Winston return to the team's old headquarters, where the refurbished ECTO-1 was waiting. Though nothing has been confirmed just yet, the implication was that Zeddemore was planning to train a new group of spook-hunters.

I didn’t watch the other one, is it good?

@TheWalkingCuban - I thought so... they definitely rehashed too many things from the original though.

@TheWalkingCuban - I thought it was actually pretty good. Not the greatest movie I ever saw but I’d definitely watch the sequel.

@RorMachine - gotcha, so basically kinda like Star Wars TFA. I guess that’s not bad enough to not watch it.

Doesn’t give me a good feeling about the next one tho ha ha

@SATW42 - I’ll try n watch it before that one comes out

@TheWalkingCuban - fwiw, I like TFA, but I will say this movie at least had more heart. At least some of the nostalgia pays off to the actual story and isn’t just there for nostalgia sake.

There’s totally nostalgia bait all over this movie, to be clear lol. But imo one of the biggest payoffs of the movie was actually a legitimately heartwarming moment that had my wife and I tearing up.

@TheWalkingCuban - Similar to TFA in that it was an homage to the original, but I found it much better. It did it’s own thing, the new characters introduced were likable, it never shit on the original characters. It was a good movie and I’m looking forward to seeing where they go with it.

I’d compare it more to Cobra Kai in that it is the well done follow up 30 years later that respects the original while building something new.

@TheWalkingCuban - I haven't either. I heard they did Harold Ramis dirty in that! Since hearing that, I've had no interest in seeing it. Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know

@SATW42 - nice recommendation

@DCfan84 - I thought it was nice of them to give Harold Ramis a send off rather than an off screen death. I wish they didn’t wait till he was dead to make the movie but I thought it was a good cameo for Ramis.

@DCfan84 - well these guys aren’t saying that, must’ve been someone really looking for something bad to say about it, some people will avoid a thing. Others will hate on it. It boosts the avoiding unfortunately

@DCfan84 - I can’t in anyway imagine how they did him dirty in the slightest. I don’t want to spoil for people here so I can’t really say more, but, I just don’t see it

@TheWalkingCuban - Yes. Not to get us too far off topic, but Cobra Kai is one of the best “late sequels” I’ve ever seen. Honors the original, without just being a redo. The world feels lived in. The new characters are (mostly) really good in their own right (I hate Sam). Fun easter eggs and nods for fans of the original that don’t detract from the story they are telling.

Afterlife didn’t necessarily bring too much new to the table, but it had some interesting stuff with the legacy of the Ghostbuster’s and specifically what Igon did after the team broke up. And the new kids - specifically Igon’s granddaughter - were cool new characters. Plus who doesn’t love Paul Rudd?

@DCfan84 - I felt like Ramos/Spangler were given quite a bit of respect in the movie personally. This wasn’t like a lot of modern Hollywood where they bash the OG heroes in order to lift up the new ones.

TheWalkingCuban - 3/21/2023, 9:48 AM
@mountainman - Sam can’t act. That Hawk kid could be the next Ben Foster

Pay Rudd is the next Paul Rudd.

@mountainman - But wasn't he some CGI Ghost dressed as a Ghostbuster (Respectively)? I would have preferred a more "intimate" reveal of the character. Instead of CGI Ghostbuster, why not have the living save the day, then have Egon eat a Twinkie, and smiling with his Granddaughter....fade to black. Idk, I guess I should see it! I was a huge GB fan growing up. The first movie came out the same month and year I was born.

@TheWalkingCuban - It's OK,better than that all women one but not as good as the original and it's sequel.

@SATW42 - I get that. And I'm not saying they did him dirty, it was all just hearsay. I'll watch it this weekend.

@TheWalkingCuban - I’m interested to see if Xolo can transition to movies. Too bad Blue Beetle will probably fail more due to WB than any quality of that movie.

The Hawk/Eli actor is good too. There are a few others, but I think those two have the biggest future potentials.

mountainman - 3/21/2023, 9:56 AM
@DCfan84 - I would have liked all the originals to have been in it more. Possibly this sequel will incorporate them more, at least the three actors that are still with us. I did find it to be a good homage to Ramis personally.

@slickrickdesigns - Yea, everyone here is telling me otherwise than what I heard. I'll check it out, and see the reveal for myself. Thanks for the heads up!

@TheWalkingCuban - Nostalgia bait garbage, literally using Harold Ramis corpse.
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 3/21/2023, 10:03 AM
@marvel72 - that was what I gathered from the beginning, it’s just hard to match the classics, almost impossible to top em. But not impossible. Scarface topped the Al Capone original. 97’s 12 Angry Men topped 57’s. Problem is, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s were an explosion of amazing cinema. The likes we’ll never see again, I’d wager my left mustache

@TheWalkingCuban - Yeah, kind of like TFA as is introduce a new cast quite well while leaning on the old ones. It's a good start for a new series of movies.

Difference with TFA is that the story, setting and characters are much different than the OG Ghostbusters, and there isn't a plan to milk the old cast through a trilogy. The next one Ghostbusters could remove the old cast completely and be totally fine.

All in all, Afterlife is a nice bridge from the old series to a brand new one. It's worth a watch, the directing, cinematography and VFX are solid and I can't wait to see what the next movie will be about.

@TheWalkingCuban - Trust me, I get that! But when I heard them say that, I just really really didn't want to be disappointed. Growing up, everyone loved Venkman, but my personal favorite was always Egon (The voice of reason and intellect, especially the scene where he figures out the interest rate on Ray's 3rd Mortgage Rate! Lmao

I liked Ghostbusters After Life and I hope they can get the old guys to mix it up with the new cast more than the previous films last 5 minutes cameo.
