Cue up the theme tune!

Sony Pictures released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel - now officially titled Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire - last night (via FearHQ.com), and it gives us an exciting first look at some footage from the latest instalment in the revitalized comedy horror franchise.

The teaser begins with an icy supernatural event causing New York to freeze over. As panic sets in, the "Death Chill" moves towards the familiar location of the Ghostbusters' firehouse, and we get a quick glimpse of the refurbished ECTO-1 back on the streets.

We also see returning spook-hunters Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), Peter Venkman (Bill Murray) and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) in their old-school duds, as well as an all-new team consisting of Gary Grooberson (Paul Rudd), Callie Spengler (Carrie Coon), and her kids Trevor (Finn Wolfhard), and Phoebe (McKenna Grace) sporting red outfits.

Then, right at the end, we get a look at a mysterious new threat in the form of a shadowy unnamed entity.

Gil Kenan takes over directing duties from Jason Reitman.

“It’s an absolute honor to pick up the proton pack and step behind the camera for the next chapter of the Spengler family saga,” said Kenan in a statement when he was announced as director. “I just wish I could go back to 1984 and tell the kid in the sixth row of the Mann Valley West that one day he was going to get to direct a Ghostbusters film.”

The first set photos were shared online back in April (click here to have a look), and they featured Hudson alongside Rudd, as well as another actor from the '80s classic, William Atherton as "dickless" Environmental Protection Agency officer Walter Peck, who will evidently be sticking his nose in the Ghostbusters' business yet again.

Check out the trailer below, along with a synopsis that should give fans a better idea of what to expect from the plot.

"In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse – to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age."

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is set to hit theaters on March 29, 2024.

Oh boy, more "completely dead inside" acting from Bill Murray.

@FinnishDude - I wonder how they convinced him to come back. I remember the guy being super against any of Ramis scripts and revival ideas.
He was the roadblock to virtually every full revival and now he’s so easy to convince?

This trailer’s got me super hyped. It feels like something out of Extreme Ghostbusters. Rudd’s laugh at the end encapsulated my reaction.

I guess I need to watch the first one now. I wasn't thrilled with kids taking over as the Ghostbusters, but I will say this one looks great.

@CorndogBurglar - I'm not crazy about having a younger cast either, but they were certainly fine in the first. This looks pretty darn awesome though, and surely different than anything they've given us before.

@CorndogBurglar - It's . . . not bad. Worth watching mostly for the cinematography, IMO, but a fine way to burn a Sunday afternoon on the couch.

@MosquitoFarmer - A lot of people seemed to like the first one. But for me, Ghostbusters always had a more adult sense of humor with its jokes. So seeing kids in the roles was off-putting. But I'll give it a chance because this sequel looks interesting.

@ClintThaHamster - Yeah, I'll give it a chance this weekend, I think.

@CorndogBurglar - The kids weren’t Ghostbusters. It’s almost more of a Stand By Me / Goonies- style children exploration and adventure movie set in the Ghostbusters universe. This one looks to be more of a mainline Ghostbusters movie.

@CorndogBurglar - But it doesn't look like they are taking over straight away, you do have some adults and the originals are in it.

@CorndogBurglar - The first one is okay as a movie, but imo not a very good Ghostbusters movie. It doesn't really capture the same humor of the first one and relies too much on nostalgia. Throwaway jokes in the original had these like spotlight callbacks as if they were all Luke Skywalker lightsaber moments. It was weird and played like an Amblin film.

I will say Paul Rudd was really good. He's perfect for the franchise. The rest of the cast didn't really sell me.

Not terrible, just not my thing and not what I wanted to see in a Ghostbusters sequel.

@CorndogBurglar - Either way, I'd rather an adult cast. Having Paul Rudd weild a proton pack along with them is a wise choice.

@CorndogBurglar - Oh one other thing about Ghostbusters: Afterlife, remember that it's directed by Jason Reitman, and it really does honor his father's previous Ghostbusters films. And I'll be absolutely damned if it doesn't make me shed a tear over the way they pay respects to Egon/ Harold Ramis; the end gets to people.

@LilJimmy - yeah, much as I enjoyed Afterlife, it struck me as odd that after Ray saying the firehouse is a Starbucks now, Winston walks into it in the post-credits scene and it looks abandoned and in a state of disrepair, like it hasn't been used since the Ghostusters stopped operating.

It looks like they're going to be doing the kind of crazy awesome stuff that only the 80's cartoon would do with insane ghosts and whatnot.

And I'm 100% on board for all of that.

Its hard for me to watch movies with these kinds of gimmicks and not be like "where is the military?" They're just gonna leave it to some kids and parents with a few laser guns to fix?

I know I know, its for fun....

I liked what I am seeing there, a new threat that doesn't just forces old gen and new gen to team up but also because it's affecting their entire environement in a literal way. The Ghostbusters are probably for the first time in uncharted waters/territory and out of their comfort zone. That's a good idea.

I'll see this on theaters for sure.
