"Hello, Sidney."

While an official production start date remains up in the air, horror icon Neve Campbell has confirmed that she will indeed return as final girl Sidney Prescott in Scream 8.

Speaking with the Associated Press about her upcoming projects, Campbell revealed, "Scream 8. That’s in the pipeline as well." When pressed for further details on the upcoming eighth installment, she teased, “Now you know I can never tell you anything about Scream 8,” before adding, “I’ll be in it.”

No director is currently attached, but we last heard in April that Lilla and Nora Zuckerman have been tapped to write the screenplay. The writing duo are best known for serving as co-showrunners on Peacock's Poker Face. Their prominent writing credits also include Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Suits, Fringe, and Prodigal Son.

Campbell has been the face of the franchise since the 1996 original and has starred in six of the seven films, missing only 2023's Scream VI due to a contract dispute. She made her grand return for Scream 7 earlier this year, which also brought original screenwriter Kevin Williamson back to the series as director. The seventh installment ultimately became the highest-grossing film in the long-running franchise, grossing over $213.8 million worldwide ($121.9M domestic; $91.9M foreign) on an estimated $45 million production budget.

With Campbell back in the fold, it remains to be seen whether her surviving on-screen family—played by Isabel May ("Tatum Evans"), Joel McHale ("Mark Evans"), Maggie Toomey ("Emma Evans"), and Annabelle Toomey ("Rebecca Evans")—will also return, though we'd bet on seeing them again in some capacity. It's also likely a safe bet that franchise veterans Courteney Cox ("Gale Weathers"), Jasmin Savoy Brown ("Mindy Meeks-Martin"), and Mason Gooding ("Chad Meeks-Martin") will return alongside her.

The Scream franchise remains one of Paramount's most lucrative properties and will likely continue playing a major role for the studio post-merger. To date, the seven films have grossed a combined $1.126 billion at the global box office.

Watch the video below:

Ghostface returns with a vengeance — and this time it’s personal. Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) has built a quiet life with her family, far from the horrors that once defined her. Forced to face the nightmare she thought was buried, Sidney launches a relentless fight to protect her family.

Let her go. Part 7 was hard evidence that it doesn’t work anymore.

Are we supposed to take these killers seriously when the main character has survived 6 times already?

How many random psychopaths on Earth are going to keep targeting her specifically?

@SonOfAGif - There's still the loose end of Mark Kincaid (Patrick Dempsey) with no explanation of what happened to him, so at least 1 more! lol

oh and Sydney's dad is still canonically alive lmao

@SATW42 - It's just so crazy to me that she is so hated in this universe just because she survived the first movie lol. At least Micheal Myers vs. Laurie made sense when they made them siblings and then again when they retconned that and made him angry that she's the one that got away. Loomis was obsessed with trying to figure out what made Michael tick. But Scream keeps killing mostly all of the killers of loose ends and just make a new one instantly hate Sidney.

@SonOfAGif - The franchise has turned into a joke and is a shell of what it was. Stab 8 was in an universe joke that is now a reality...

Scream is my favorite horror franchise, but 7 was so utterly disappointing for multiple reasons. I loved the direction 5 and 6 were going, but now that storyline has been nixed and with how bad 7 was, I'm sad to say the idea of Scream 8 doesn't really excite me at all.

Just let this franchise DIE! Wes is rolling in his grave, part 7 was trash, they wasted Mathew Lillards return with this Ai bullshit story. Also screw Spyglass & their firing of Melissa being a decent human being & calling out a genocide 😒 they're the real villains.

At this point, just cross over with Scary Movie and bring in Doofy to be the man behind the mask

Scream is going to be 20 years old this year in December. So for twenty years, what is so fresh about this franchise that was considered fresh 1996? These questions are never fully addressed the way Wes Craven explored the first three sequels.

That's the problem right now. It's the same story almost all the time that tries to make clever fun of the horror genre but often feels a little too little too late now. I feel the movies have been far removed to what made Scream so great, that it's becoming the butt of the joke that was established with the STAB franchise in the Scream movies.

It's not about adding technological advancements like AI, or social media or anything that teens/young adults are infatuated with. Scream was important because it was released during a time where horror movies were becoming stale and Scream felt like it reinvented the slasher genre. Especially when the last big slasher movie (at the time) was Halloween 6 and that, was a clear BO bomb. It's commentary on the horror genre.

While it's very possible people just are looking at these movies and looking past what made these clever and just love to see the kills. It has lost steam for me and a "POINT" when you begin to watch them from 1-7 and just thinking...jesus how much more could someone mess with Sydney!? How rent free is she man!? And these elaborate plots set up nearly TWENTY YEARS IN THE MAKING like my god it's just becoming so corny.

@Irregular - I hate to break it to you, but 1996 was 30 years ago. Trust me, I don't like that fact any more than you do.

Here is an idea. Make Scream into a TV series called Scream(s) and have each episode be an anthology of a copy cat Ghostface killer in different parts of the United States using the mask with different costumes and going on a rampage before being arrested or killed. Have an FBI agent be the main character who is doing an investigation into what is known as the "The Ghost Faces" cult. Then have the season end with the FBI detective discovering that there is indeed a cult that is grooming Teens and mentally unstable adults into being killers.
