SCREAM Spoilers: Who Is Beneath Ghostface's Mask And Which Victims Do They Claim?

The fifth installment in the Scream franchise opened on Friday (you can check out our review here), and whether you've already been to see the movie and fancy a recap, or simply want to know what happens, we have you covered with some major spoilers.

Scream begins with a franchise staple, as lone teenager Tara (Jenna Ortega) is menaced by a new incarnation of Ghostface. This time, however, the victim survives (being stabbed repeatedly is really only a minor inconvenience in these movies), setting up the arrival of her estranged sister Sam (Melissa Barrera).

It just so happens that Sam is the daughter of original Ghostface Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich), who appears via some slightly dodgy de-aging CGI in an attempt to amplify his little girl's propensity for violence. This marks Sam as one of the potential killers, but the real culprits turn out to be her seemingly supportive boyfriend Richie (Jack Quaid) and Tara's bestie Amber (Mikey Madison), who met in a Stab (the fictional movie series based on the Woodsboro murders) chatroom and decided to play copycat.

Paramount Pictures has (understandably) gone to great lengths to preserve spoilers, but the movie actually gives the game away about 20 minutes in when Richie and Amber share a very telling look after being introduced by Sam in the hospital. We are thrown off the scent with a few red herrings as the film progresses, but this seemed like an odd thing to signpost so early on.

Our deranged new Ghostfaces notch up quite a kill-count, including Scream 4 returnee Sherriff Judy (Marley Shelton), and, in the movie's most shocking moment, Dewey Riley (David Arquette). The franchise OG makes the mistake of going back to "put one in the head" after taking down Ghostface (we later learn it was Amber), but is distracted by his phone, allowing the killer to strike.

Sydney Prescot (Neve Campbell) and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) make it to the credits with only minor injuries (ie, multiple stab and bullet wounds) after helping Tara and Sam dispatch the killers.

Scream 6? If this one does well, we wouldn't bet against it.

I've been wanting them to kill off one of the main three for a long time. It's about time.

A good twist would have been if she killed Sid and Gale right at the end.

@micvalpro - I was hoping for a third killer who gets away at the end, setting up a sequel.

It bothers me that two such idiotic killers, with pathetic motivation, killed Dewey. The rest great.

@Repian - It kills me that this tiny girl who weighs like 100lbs wet killed Dewey. Like wtf?!

I loved it. Wish the original trio had more time but solid 8/10. Pegged the crazy girl Amber due to her role in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

@jratz - I like that Sid came later. Thus, they were able to successfully develop the character of Melissa Barrera (Sam). She is the true protagonist of the sequel. Besides, Sid needed a good reason to come back.

I'm a huge fan of the Scream series the first movie being my favorite, with the exception of the original three actors coning back & Mikey Madison who plays Amber who is absolutely beautiful this movie was garbage. The writers really over did it with the meta humor which took me out of this movie just like The Matrix 4: Resurrections felt like a parody of the series this felt like a cheap parody of the first, I felt like I was watching an installment Scary Movie by the end I was expecting Marlon Waynes character "Shorty" to burst out of the door at any minute into a ridiculous scene.

Best actual film since the first but the most predictable twist out of all of them. Scream 4 had the best one of the new films.

I guessed Richie was the killer in like his second scene

@Repian - Yeah, When I saw the scene with Gale screaming and the scene when Dewey is alone with a gun in the trailer I said to my fiancee "yeah, Dewey is dead" and she was "nooo, they wouldn't kill Dewey. It's a red herring in the trailer"...

They should do a final Scream 6 with these characters. Go balls to the wall and give Syd and Gale much more to do along with the new cast that's left.

@ThorArms - The imaginary Billy Loomis may continue to infect Sam's mind. Pills, therapy and much more to bury "dad" in the depths of her mind. But when a new killer emerges, Billy returns and Sam's mind deteriorates even further.

I really enjoyed this film but I did have one big problem and it’s the same problem I had with Scream 4: please stop making teenagers the killers. It worked in the original but it doesn’t work when Emma Roberts is 5’2 and weighs 90 lbs but she’s able to physically beat up people much stronger and taller than her? Rory Culkin who played Charlie is only 5’6 and skinny as hell but you’re telling me one of these two threw an adult woman through a glass door in the opening kill? LOL

Mikey who played Amber is also 5’2 but was able to murder Dewey in that fashion? GTFO no. Any adult could take her ass down lol

No disrespect to Mikey - she was good and she’s beautiful - but not physically threatening. Jack Quaid as Ritchie is more believing cause he’s 6’1.

@TheLobster - You are right on ! It doesn't always have to be a teenage killer...but I do get it. A lot of teenagers today ( In reality ) are off they meds and needs to be checked.

Fun Fact:

I shot a film last year and Mikey Madison was the lead, I shared all my scenes w/ her (all 2 of them).

Pros - I actually really enjoyed the new characters and thought they did a much better job with passing the torch to them then the 4th film did. Sam, Tara, Richie and Chad were the standouts for me. I liked Mindy Meeks at first, but then she started to become an arrogant movie know it all. Then again Randy was the same way in 1 and 2 so maybe that's what they were going for.

I knew atleast one legacy character was going to have to die and the writting was on the wall for Dewey.... but man was it hard to see him go, I was smiling from ear to ear when his theme kicked in. Out of the main 3 Arquette always seemed to be having the most fun so it's sad he won't be involved in the franchise anymore. I do think they really pulled of his death though so kudos to the filmmakers for honoring the character.

Cons - As nostalgic and fun as it was to see Skeet Ulrich back as Billy Loomis his connection to Sam felt misplaced. I know he was a vision from her psyche but it weirdly felt like they were almost redeeming Billy in a way with him helping Sam like some Psycho force ghost.  Out of the two Stu was always the more interesting killer, Billy was just a "repressed mommas boy".  Also if anyone was going to have a secret kid out of the two Stu fit the most, the guy was thirsty as hell in the first film.

I thought the Ghostface aspect was done great, he was brutal and more serious but the killer reveal landed flat for me. I guessed Richie would be one of the killers, but the motive was wrong (I thought he would be the son of Stu). The crazy fan motive and meta commentary about fan culture was eye rolling and really makes it seem like filmmakers in general cant take criticism at all. Also didnt mind Amber being a killer, but having her seemingly be the one in the Ghostface costume doing most of the killing makes Zero sense. I know it's a movie and there is suspension of disbelief for the most part but Amber's actress is 5"3 and a buck 10 at most and Ghostface was obviously over 6'0 in the film. This would have made since if it was Quid in the costume during the Dewey Hospital scene but we know Amber was Ghostface at that time which really pulled me out of the film (Same problem with Jill and Charlie being the killers in 4)

Still one of the better Scream sequels though. My ranking is now

Scream 1
Scream 2
Scream 5
Scream 4
Scream 3

And especially the height thing. When she took her mask off I was like, wait, that dude was wayy taller

@Dredd97 - Scream 2 just has a special place in my heart. I love the College setting and along with the first one it's a perfect time capsule of the late 90s. Also I'm a Timothy Olyphant stan.

You say that was a strange signpost when Dewey effectively said he was the killer?
MarkCassidy

@Origame - Well, I mean that's always been one of the "rules" right? We'd have been looking at the love interest even if Dewey didn't bring it up. They could have swerved us, but that look between the two of 'em just came out of nowhere and wasn't explained.

Such a missed opportunity on having one of these 3 finally mentally snapping and becoming the killer.
