As a follow-up to Jordan Peele's psychological thriller
Get Out, which was both a critical and commercial success, there's a lot of anticipation and hype surrounding his next project,
Us.
Not much is known about his next film, which
stars Lupita Nyong'o and Winston Duke (both from
Black Panther), but Entertainment Weekly has shared two exclusive photos along with some our first details about the upcoming movie.
“For my second feature, I wanted to create a monster mythology,” Peele said.
“I wanted to do something that was more firmly in the horror genre but still held on to my love of movies that are twisted but fun.”
Details are still vague as we've only been treated to posters for the movie, but EW did briefly share some plot points to help set the stage for the exclusive images.
The story is set in the present day and follows Adelaide and Gabe Wilson (Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke) as they take their kids to Adelaide’s old childhood beachside home in Northern California for the summer. After a day at the beach with the Tyler family (which includes Elisabeth Moss and Tim Heidecker), Adelaide — who’s haunted by a lingering trauma from her past — becomes increasingly more paranoid that something bad will happen to her family. As night falls, the Wilsons see four figures holding hands and standing silently at the bottom of their driveway…
Nyongo' revealed that Peele was on her "wish list" of people to work with, making
Us an easy sell for the
Black Panther star. Peele then sought out her Marvel co-star, Winston Duke, who plays M'Baku in the MCU.
“I could see signs of them flirting online — they’re both flirts in general — you could see the couple in them who would want to be together, so the chemistry is just on,” Peeled said.
Duke acknowledged the chemistry between the two actors but pointed out that Gabe is far from the intimidating warrior he played in
Black Panther.
“It was important for me to not come off as a warrior in this film,” Duke said of Gabe, who he described as Homer Simpson-esque.
“He’s very sporadic and impulsive, he’s the husband and the alpha, and I think that leads to some of the conflict that is in the marriage when we meet the Wilsons.”
The first poster for
Us only teased the movie as a "new nightmare" from Jordan Peele. Nyong'o reaffirmed this tagline, teasing
“it turns into this relentless nightmare that taps into [Adelaide’s] deepest fears and ours as well — the idea that we might be our own worst enemies.”
Us looks to terrify audiences when it hits theaters March 15, 2019.
