In 2022, Marvel Studios celebrated Halloween by releasing its first Special Presentation, Werewolf by Night. Directed by acclaimed composer Michael Giacchino, it introduced us to characters like the titular werewolf, Man-Thing, and Elsa Bloodstone, though they've yet to reappear.

As the first MCU horror story, it was something new from Marvel Studios. Presenting it in black and white made the special feel unlike anything else we'd seen from the studio on Disney+, and it returned to the streamer a year later in full colour.

There have been rumblings about a sequel, but nothing concrete. Four years on, it feels a little like the moment has passed, though the special's leads could potentially return in the long-rumoured Midnight Sons movie.

During a recent Reddit AMA, Jack Russell himself, Gael García Bernal, commented on where things stand with Marvel Studios' Werewolf by Night plans.

"I urge you to do whatever you can, whatever is in your power, to push Marvel into some sense of responsibility and also of ambition," the actor wrote in response to a fan. "Because they need to do something with Jack and Ted and Werewolf By Night."

"It was for me a wonderful project to do, I loved doing it, I had so much fun experiencing that, and for me it was only a taste," Bernal continued. "I wish I could do more, we had many plans, I hope they materialize one day!"

It's a shame that Marvel Studios hasn't made more Werewolf by Night a bigger priority. The response from fans and critics was overwhelmingly positive, but with no official viewership data, it's unclear whether the special made the necessary impact to warrent a follow-up.

"A Halloween horror delight, Werewolf by Night is a mighty impressive, macabre Marvel monster tale that introduces some killer new characters and proves Marvel Studios can still find plenty of ways to surprise us," we said in our review when the special hit Disney+. "More Man-Thing is a must!"

On a dark and somber night, a secret cabal of monster hunters emerge from the shadows and gather at the foreboding Bloodstone Temple following the death of their leader. In a strange and macabre memorial to the leader’s life, the attendees are thrust into a mysterious and deadly competition for a powerful relic—a hunt that will ultimately bring them face to face with a dangerous monster. Inspired by horror films of the 1930s and 1940s, the chilling special aims to evoke a sense of dread and the macabre, with plenty of suspense and scares along the way as we explore a new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Werewolf by Night is now streaming on Disney+.

Midnight Sons is a no-brainer that needs to happen in Phase 7 imo. Perfect opportunity to bring Werewolf, Man-Thing, Black Knight, Moon Knight, Blade and Ghost Rider together

@bkmeijer1 - agreed

They even have the perfect setup for it too imo with the Black Knight’s Ebony Blade having been Dracula’s Blade before and now Lilith wants it back to resurrect him etc.

This and Moonknight were insanely wasted. I know that the latter was mid overall, but both of these projects deserved so much more than a one-and-done thing

@ArthurFuchsache - just because they haven’t done anything with them yet doesn’t mean they are wasted since they could still bring them back in the future like they have done with other things (even though i do wish it was sooner)

Also Moon Knight is one my favorite post EG projects so it definitely wasn’t mid to me haha.

@TheVisionary25 - what I mean is that they've done nothing with either for 4 years now. Enjoyed MK overall, but was definitely left feeling like we could have had more of him, and less of the supporting cast. Middling is the word I should have used. That being said I've not given it a rewatch, so will have too soon.

@ArthurFuchsache - i agree with you there…

I feel given how big the MCU has gotten , some characters are bound to sadly get left on the wayside while others take priority at different times.

You are not the only one who felt it was middling so that’s fine , i just really connected to it and even liked/enjoyed the supporting cast of Layla ,Harrow and Khonshu.

Stuff like this went a long way in vitiating the marvel brand. Very very few people care about the disney+ stuff

I loved that little film. Now THAT should have been a series. What are they thinking?

I would love it if they would make Werewolf By Night an annual or biannual Halloween special. I enjoyed the hell out of it.

WBN is one of the best things Marvel ever released on D+.
It deserves a follow up.
Keep it cheap and cheerful and very stylised.

Still, I think the best series they could do is a a Marvel Tales, or a Marvel Team up show.
Kinda like the special presentations but with the chance to showcase multiple different heroes and villains. Not required viewing for the MCU but enough links that they could be somewhere on the timeline.
Alas, I feel that time may have passed.
Marvel have missed so many opportunities to do good shows and I still can't believe we got Echo, Ironheart and those shitty Secret Invasion and She Hulk shows over anything Midnight Suns related.

I loved WBN but not sure how he fits into the rest of the MCU. His look was a little wonky but in a good way. Man-Thing looked great and could be dropped in lot of places.

How about a prequel instead?
An origin movie for either WBN or Man-Thing would be welcome.

Both would be even better.

I won't keep count but WBN B&W will probably wind up being the one thing I watch the most from MCU. A lot of the movies I enjoy but I love WBN with Man-Thing; nearly flawless. Which is, of course, why they are sadly dropping the ball and moving on from it.
