Will We See A Shared Movie Universe Of Classic Universal Monsters?

That's the suggestion Roberto Orci -- who along with writing partner Alex Kurtzman is working on reboots of The Mummy and Van Helsing -- has made in an interview with IGN anyway. The likes of Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolfman all on an Avengers type team perhaps?

Shared movie universes are all the rage at the minute -- we've got the MCU, the beginning of the DCCU, and even Fox have begun to combine their stable of Marvel characters. Now we know that we have new versions of both The Mummy and Van Helsing on the way from writing duo Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, but could they just be the kicking off point of a new monster movie universe? That's certainly the suggestion made by Orci in a recent interview with IGN.

"There’s an interesting thing that could happen at Universal where they have this amazing library of their old monsters and these kinds of heroes, and the idea of trying to create a universe. [We're doing] Van Helsing, and we’re also producing The Mummy for them. We’re kind of imagining updating these kinds of things. You don’t want to just make remakes when you’re doing a thing, unless it’s worthy of being a remake, but when you have an idea for something that can actually be made different and yet be true to what it was. We just had a notion of how to make it modern and have a slightly different tone. It’s not going to be just a remake."

Universal's stable of classic monsters features not only heavy hitters like Dracula, Frankenstein and The Wolfman, but the likes of The Phantom of the Opera, The Invisible Man, The Creature From The Black Lagoon, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame -- so the possibilities are endless. But of course thinking about this one can't help but be reminded of the disaster that was the last Van Helsing..and then even the Wolfman misfire when they tried to hike up the horror factor with an R rating. Do you guys think this is a good idea? Sound off below.

House of Dracula, house of Frankenstein, and Frankenstein meets the wolf man established that they exist in the same universe in the forties. In essence they've already pulled team ups long before avengers.

The 2010's. When the words 'story','plot' and 'resolution' were replaced with 'reboot','crossover' and 'more'.

Not the first time--anyone ever see "Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman" (1943), followed later by "House of Frankenstein" (1944), "House of Dracula" (1945), and "Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein" (1948)?

Instead of trying to create another "team", why not just do a series of STAND ALONE monster films, albeit updated and reimagined? I'd love to see some of the more obscure monsters get a fresh coat of creepy. If they decide to get someone like Guillermo del Toro or David Cronenberg to do some of these, that could be really cool. (They won't, but it would be cool.)

Finally! Remakes of classics! Hard to see where this would go considering for "evil" you have Dracula, Creature from Black Lagoon, Mummy etc... Misunderstood is Frankensteins monster and then you have The Wolfman who could almost be the "Hero" of the piece? Closest crossover with these guys was with Abbott and Costello consisting of Wolfman, Frankenstein'sMonster and Dracula
