BOX OFFICE: IRON MAN 3 Tracking For Massive $125+ Million Opening Weekend

Deadline reports that early tracking for Iron Man 3 indicates that the movie is on course to open with an impressive $125+ million. This would mean that it matches - and more than likely beats - the amount taken by Iron Man 2 back in 2010 (not an easy feat for the third instalment in any franchise). According to the site, they've learned that "total awareness numbers are in the 90s while definite interest is at 67 which is higher than even The Avengers. which went on to make the highest North American opening of all time with $207M. Iron Man 3 also has incredibly strong numbers with women and Hispanics across the board." Of course, tracking isn't always reliable, but I would say that we should expect to see the movie open with even bigger numbers than this, especially if the buzz surrounding the movie is positive when it's released internationally in a couple weeks time. What do you guys think? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place!

Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

STARRING:

Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man
Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin
Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts
Don Cheadle as Rhodey/War Machine
Guy Pearce as Aldrich Killian
Rebecca Hall as Dr. Maya Hansen
Ashley Hamilton as Jack Taggert
James Badge Dale as Eric Savin
Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan

RELEASE DATE: April 25th, 2013 (UK). May 3rd, 2013 (US).

How popular iron man has gotten over the last few years is incredible, I'd go as far as to say he's up there with batman, spider-man and superman in terms of popularity, at least at the moment.

There is no one who saw the rest of the Iron Man movies and the Avengers who is skipping out on this because they are waiting for Man Of Steel. MOS is exciting because it's a new take on Superman, but it is an unproven entity. I have never liked Superman personally, and I would like MOS to change that, but I am leery about it, and I'm sure a lot of other people are too.

My final estimation on CBMs this year

IM3 750 mil
MOS 600 mil
Wol 350 mil
Thor 500 mil
KA2 400 mil

T:TDW > IM3 > MOS > KA2 > SC:ADTKF > WOL

Considering MOS was down on the list of anticipated movies this summer, I doubt that it will have any affect on IM3 ticket purchases. The Iron Man franchise is a proven commodity now. Superman films have under-delivered for years now, regardless of how iconic Superman is. Sad...but true.

$125M is conservative, it'll be higher than that. I'd like to know what the analysts forecast in the coming weeks.

@TheManFromMars

Why would Spider-Man be needing money from Iron Man? None of IM's movies have yet to outgross any of SM's 4 films. Will Iron Man 3 be able to do it? We shall see.
BlanketMan
BlanketMan - 4/11/2013, 11:16 AM
Boxoffice.com has been predicting a $151 Mil opening for weeks now - $125 would be a bit of a disappointment. But something that might detract from its OW gross is the Thursday 9 PM showings, which I don't think will count toward the OW. Not sure why IM3 is going that route, but I'm glad I won't have to stay up til 3 AM to see it 'first'!
