BOX OFFICE: Weekend Actuals For AFTER EARTH, IRON MAN 3 And More

The $130M After Earth debuted to a disappointing S27.52M this weekend but all hope is not lost for the Will Smith and M.Night Shyamalan joint venture. Plus, updates on Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness.

Amid reports of a failure for After Earth, keep in mind that Will Smith, (just like Tom Cruise) does the majority of his box office power lifting overseas these days. Men In Black 3 earned 71% of its box office total overseas and Hancock earned a comparable 67% of its gross earnings internationally as well. While not expected to cross the $70M mark here in the U.S., experts predict that After Earth could earn 3x that number in foreign markets for a $280M worldwide gross. Nothing stellar to be sure but certainly not a failure of Battleship proportions.

Iron Man 3 earned another $8.44M domestically and in its 5th week of release. Its earnings currently total $1.18B on a $200M production budget.

Star Trek Into Darkness earned $16.7M in its third week of release. Its worldwide gross currently sits at $328.9M on a $190M production budget. The film has still not opened in a number of international territories so the film's current box office performance is not as dire as it seems at first blush. Many estimates have the film finishing in the $500M range, well above the $385M the 2009 reboot earned.

Yeah, because to be a failure of Battleship proportions, it would have to make about 20 million MORE. :p

(Battleship made 303 million worldwide.)

After Earth:

I'm sure thats $27.52 and not $27.52 million? - surely not!.

To be honest I'm surprised it made $27.52, but that total would be more believable.

@Omarvls

It would probably reach 400million mark by the middle of the month.

AE is going to be a flop, not Battleship level but still a flop nonetheless. I keep thinking this is M. Night's last gig but some idiot in Hollywood thinks he's got one more golden egg left in him.

If we factor in 3D tickets, STID is maybe marginally better than ST09, not what Paramount was hoping for. Not a flop but certainly still a disappointment.

Meanwhile some folks on Buena Vista and Rosecrans are popping champagne bottles...

I am concerned that bad pub for AE and WWZ could sour people to going to see MOS and or Wolverine if any reviews give them doubts about their quality. Could go either way after two 'blockbusters' flop.

@mark Julian battleship would of turned a little profit considering the huge amount of merchandise ....just like gi Joe rise of cobra.... that didn't double its production budget yet we got a sequel right. Battleship did big numbers in international markets it only flopped in the us and as for dredd that's a straight up flop 45 million budget and only 36 million box office no merchandise to save that one.

It's completely IDIOTIC how some of you guys are whining about his son. Let the man and his son fail together in peace who gives a flying sh**!! Some of you all are seriously acting like a bunch of gals. And the guy up top who called his son "ugly" is [frick]ing gay! lol Grow the hell up!

And stop using these lame excuses that everyone else is saying...

-he's forcing his son into films.
-he withdrew from DJango Unchained to star in it.
-The Karate Kid
-His son is annoying

It makes no sense and you don't know sh** about what him and his son is doing so please move on! lol

That's just us DVD sales where it flopped at the box office! What about international where it done well and by the way gi Joe was released at a time when bluray was just starting and DVD was the bigger format...you haven't included bluray sales and what about all the battleship kreo....

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=dredd.htm box office mojo is a credible site all of the budgets listed are production only and don't include marketing( you think universal payed to advertise on their own network/cable channels!) 36 mil boxoffice 50mil production budget!

@INSTANTJUSTICE

Dredd cost $50 million to make (£35 million), that was its production budget not including its marketing. It made $35 million at the box office worldwide and after the ticket split percentages takes its course between studios and theaters that rounds out to about $25 million. It didn't make any way near its budget back, it in fact made a huge loss.

And this myth that movies make their money back on home video has to stop here, they never do, not in a million years! Home video like everything else has a production cost and a margin that splits between retailer, manufacturer and studio as well as royalties to contributors. The studio gets even less money back from a home video sale and Dredd would need sales levels of Titanic or Avengers to even come close to breaking even.

Avengers made nearly $95 million in DVD sales, Dredd made just over $10 million. All that isn't free money to just add to the profits, its subject to marketing cost, royalties and manufacturer/retail margin splits so for every million it makes you have to add around 30% of that to the production budget.

This is why a movie needs to make at least 3 times its budget in this day and age to remotely be considered a success at the box office unless it can sell merchandise like hot cakes the way Pixar films or popular superhero flicks do. Merchandise sales ad billions to the equation, not mere millions. Dredd had no where near that clout in its corner despite a low budget, it flopped, let it go!

And just for the record, US Home video sales is practically equal to half of what a film makes worldwide, that's the size of the US home video market. Pretty much the same with films, it takes an exceptionally successful movie to counter that balance and make larger sales internationally than it does domestically like Avengers or Titanic. And you also have to keep adding the production and marketing cost internationally to that equation which hopeful fans love to just pretend do not exist.

Dredd aint no Avengers or Titanic, it flopped, get over it!

here's my 2 cents on the new Star Trek's b.o. performance. it's a rehash of Wrath of Khan..plus, the non-Trekkie/Trekker audience don't really have anything to invest in the story or characters. to me Into Darkness's too much INTO Trek fans only.

so, my suggestion is to make a much more ACCESSIBLE and appealing story to the non-star trek fan audience for the second sequel, IF there IS one in the future. enuff with rehashing old stuff, time to actually come up with something NEW and fresh for the new cast and crew.

I think it's more a product of Shymalan rather than Will Smith, though I do think having his son as front & center didn't do the film any favors.
