Chinese Cut Of IRON MAN 3 Ridiculed For Product Placement And Throwaway Characters

There's only four minutes of additional footage in the Chinese version of Iron Man 3, but it doesn't sound as if we're missing an awful lot! As well as in-your-face product placement, it thoroughly wastes actors like Wang Xueqi and Fan Bingbing. Read on for details!

When comic book fans heard that the Chinese would be getting a special cut of Iron Man 3 (as a result of Marvel Studios' deal with DMG Entertainment; a Chinese production company who helped finance the threequel), they were worried that it would mean they would miss out on some great material. Fear not! According to The Hollywood Reporter, it sounds as if the extra four minutes of footage adds absolutely nothing to the movie. Below is a brief excerpt from their report.

As the houselights dimmed in cinemas across mainland China at around midnight on Tuesday, audiences attending the first wave of public screenings of Iron Man 3 fell silent with apprehension as a question appeared on screen: "What does Iron Man rely on to revitalize his energy?" After a three-second blackout, three big Chinese characters appeared onscreen: "Gu Li Duo." The Marvel fanboys shouldn’t bother to rummage through their libraries to solve this riddle, because Gu Li Duo isn’t a a mystical power source in the original comic series — it’s a milk drink which is on sale for less than $1 a carton in convenience stores across mainland China.

All of these additional sequences revolve around Chinese characters. There’s Dr Wu having a telephone conversation – from his office in Beijing, in Chinese – with the television behind him showing a news bulletin of Iron Man cheered by schoolchildren in one of the Chinese capital’s landmarks. And towards the end of the film, Dr. Wu is shown operating on Stark – and then having a short conversation with his unnamed assistant (played by Fan Bingbing) about the task.

As you may have guessed, this footage was criticised and ridiculed by Chinese bloggers who saw the film and clearly doesn't bring anything of any note to the movie. Shane Black confirmed that he had no involvement with what was shot in China, so fans angry with him about that big twist won't be able to blame the director! Whether or not Transformers 4 handles its Chinese co-production remains to be seen, but it seems unlikely that Marvel will bother putting this on the Blu-ray!

Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

STARRING:

Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man
Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin
Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts
Don Cheadle as Rhodey/War Machine
Guy Pearce as Aldrich Killian
Rebecca Hall as Dr. Maya Hansen
Ashley Hamilton as Jack Taggert
James Badge Dale as Eric Savin

There should only be one cut of the film no matter where they're seeing it.

I just dont get how these extra scenes fit into the movie without coming across as forced and affecting the pacing of the movie, how does the scene with Iron Man with his old armor fit into the film, it doesn't make sense

I love their movies but this is some of the most blatant whoring I've ever seen by Marvel. Did they REALLY need those few extra dollars?

Meh. I'm sure its still an excellent movie in China, stupid advertising or not. Still, having a damn advertisement in the middle of a movie for no reason would feel very cheap.

Marvel is making the best CBM's around nowadays. Hopefullyt they dont pull a Fox and start slipping toward satisfying the status quo at the expense of the story and original material.

When I first saw the trailer for this movie I couldn't wait to see it. Now after hearing about the bullshit twist and other little things, I'm really not that pumped. But alas, seeing it tomorrow night and will reserve final judgement until I've taken it in.

Seriously, let the Iron Man franchise die already.
It's overstayed its welcome. Give a shot to other Marvel properties like Iron Fist, Black Panther, Luke Cage, Moon Knight, etc. Guardians of the Galaxy is a step towards the right direction but they need to let the "A" listers take a rest for a while. Iron Man has pretty much become the Batman of Marvel.

When does Loki cast a Potter-like, word spell? I felt like that was the idea with the mouth-cuffs, but kinda more so as a sight-gag to shutting him up.

Anyway, I'm not well versed in a business/finance, so can someone tell me why MARVEL/Disney needs funding assistance for Iron Man3? I don't get it.

NeoBaggins, it's like asking why the NY Jets bought Tebow...

Just to please potential future massive investors I would presume. Also it helps when counting profits if you got some free funding along the way for advertising.

Too serious talk there you go I lighten it up, McGee as Wolverine

all i have to say is everyone needs to see it more than once, especially if you're a fanby. if youre a fan of the comics see it a couple times. the first time youre going to hate it, because it is a completely different film, the second time i'm sure youre going to actually see what theyre going for and hopefully like it, by the third time you will love this movie.

its really cool. very much a shane black film. but its a really nice addition. i wish they switched directors after iron man 1 so we could get used to the huge change of feel, but i welcome it anyway.

to be honest, every iron man film has been more about the guy within the suit of armor as opposed to what he can do with the armor on, so personally i really enjoyed it.
