Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3″ pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Iron Man 3 was directed by Shane Black, from a screenplay written by Drew Pearce. The film opened in theaters May 3, 2013. It stars: Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark), Gwyneth Paltrow (Virginia Potts), Don Cheadle (Col. James Rhodes), and Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin.

Am I the only one who noticed that the Iron Man 3 twist is The Dark Knight Rises twist in reverse?

In The Dark Knight rises they lead you to believe Miranda a normal person, then she's really a villain.

In Iron Man 3 they lead you to believe the Mandarin is a villain, then you find out he's just a normal guy.

Not accusing anyone of anything. Just thought it was interesting to point out.

It's sad that I have to explain myself at the end so that I won't get attacked by fanboys.

Thumper/ Striker looks badass. I don't recall seeing him in the movie. They needed more screen time those other suits...

That Key Frame Illustration for the Final Battle looks cooler than the actual final battle in the movie.

This film looked good, that was all; just a misstep which again highlights Marvel's unnecessary love 4 comedy in films that don't need much... Oh well...

It was 2/3 of a good movie. Just goes to show how a dumb plot twist and a bad ending can spoil a whole movie.

The mark 25 was in the final battle. It was the tall suit that jumped onto the catwalk in front of those Extremis soldiers. It then pounded down on the catwalk Hulk style and sent the soldiers flying.

I find it funny that people completely ignore the fact that Killian was the Mandarin in this movie, not Trevor. Trevor was the decoy.

Go read Iron Man: Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and you'll see that the depiction of the current Mandarin is closer to how Aldrich Killian was in his film with hints of Mallen from the Extremis storyline (fire-breathing and all). I thought this movie was awesome, tied up the Iron Man movies well.

@ FlamingCarrot

You are 100% right Killian was the Mandarin but what was the point or significance of the name in that context. With Ra's the decoys allowed the real guy to move in the shadows and add to his 'immortality'. Ra's was the head of the league of Shadows.

With Mandarin the character is the leader of a fictional terrorist organisation, so Killian basically declares himself the leader of the non existent 10 Rings.

Killian was the Mandarin though, and he seemed to be the same type character as the modern Mandarin aside from the rings, yet people still say a Chinese Mandarin is racist blah blah blah...

Mandarin was changed for financial reasons period, but I don't think the twist is what holds this movie back.

@breakUbatman

In light the revelation, Kingsley’s portrayal doesn't make the name obsolete at all, as “The Mandarin” terrorist persona essentially acted as Killian’s “face” and mouthpiece, thus remaining a vital part of his character.

I think what Killian truly meant during his final speech, in which he tells Tony that they should stop wearing “false faces”, is to highlight his acceptance and self-entitlement towards his crimes as well as his role as the true “Mandarin”. The title of the “Mandarin” does mean “advisor to the king” which basically hints at Killian’s goal of gaining power and control over the government while continually using the terrorist persona to manipulate the public.

Out of all 3 main villains, Killian is by far the most significant in the trilogy. Stane was the evil uncle who wanted the Stark throne for himself. Vanko wanted classic revenge. But Killian was Tony's biggest fan who gets shunned by his hero and then strives to become him by destroying everything he has. Tony essentially created his own arch enemy.

Now I don't think the Chinese Mandarin is racist, but I do think the current version in the comics works a lot better in this trilogy. Adding the ten rings, alien technology, etc. I think would have been overload and really taken away from the story. Also Killian does wear several different rings throughout the movie, possibly a hint of things to come? I think there may be plans to use him again in a later movie.
