Marvel Studios Moving Forward with Iron Man Spin-off for 'War Machine'?

Recent reports has Marvel Studios moving forward with a 'War Machine' spin-off from the Iron Man franchise, waiting for screenwriters to jump on board. Check it Out!

Back when the multi-talented actor Terrence Howard claimed the "James Rhodes" role in Marvel Studios' first independently-produced film, Iron Man, there was already speculation that Howard was cast not only to bring star-power to that film, but also to branch it out into a tentative solo-franchise.

Though Howard was replaced with Don Cheadle, who is open to the spin-off idea, finally suiting up as War Machine for the sequel, according to Dustin Rowles of Pajiba’s semi-legendary Hollywood Cog, there has been further discussion over at Marvel Studios, where the spin-off is in the works.

"It may be denied if reported, but don't be surprised if you hear about a War Machine spin-off soon. Pitch is out to writers #thehollywoodcog"

So basically, Marvel has an idea for a story, and is in search of screenwriter(s) to adapt the idea into a screenplay. If true, like the Black Widow spin-off Marvel affirmed in September, I believe they just want to be able to say they have a script for this or that in the can, just in case the introduction of characters like 'Iron Fist' & 'Doctor Strange' don't work out.

And being that Marvel has a lengthy slate of films, including a third Iron Man film set for May 3rd, 2013, which I assume would include Rhodey, don't expect to see War Machine on any solo ventures anytime soon. In the meantime, what do you think of the idea, and ideal storylines?

I read this over earlier over at cinemablend. If Marvel wants to focus on a Black character it better be The Black Panther or Luke Cage

Blakc Panther is a must for large screen treatment..

but i would love to see a technology war film thriller, where Don Cheadle's character goes off on missions for the US airforce.. the question would obviously come in the fact that War Machine isnt exactly family friendly.
And im not sure who he would be going against or have as supporting characters.

Pretty much nothing from the last War Machine comic series could be used for large screen treatment and i cant say i know a great deal about his earlier series to suggest anything specific.

I think Don Cheadle was great as Rhodes and that a War Machine Spin off would be awesome. But, I have never read a War MAchiene Solo COmic and I was wondering if he has his own group of rogue villains or does he just fight Iron Man's. If he fights some Iron Man Villains in the movvie, I would like to see some villains we wont see in the Iron Man Film Series like Blizzard, Living Laser, MODOK, or Titanium Man. I would also like to see War Machine eventually lead the West Coast Avengers.

Don Cheadle is a very good actor, a War Machine movie would be cool. Are you listening Disney ? Avengers must be made ASAP!!! You have gotten great actors for your Marvel Studios/Disney productions.

I would have been excited for this BEFORE IM2. Cheadle was really lame as Rhodey.

I really love the name War Machine and think it would make an excellent action movie, just by the title alone.

I think I'd like to see the character developed, like in the recent comic book and have him fighting this one man war.You lose the aspects that are exclusive to Iron Man, like the wealth, celebrity, romance and light humor and just make a movie an action movie.

Black Panther and Luke Cage should be the main focus for Marvel right now.

Terrece Howard was the ultimate Rhodey.

And there's no point doing this spin-off....Not when we have Iron Man 3 ahead.

Rhody doesn't need to be more comical, he needs to be the straight man.He actually needs more screen time.

I could see a solo film involving Fury enlisting him for certain missions that he doesn't trust with Iron Man, or a mission that needs an actual soldier.

Why bother with "Black Iron Man", when they already have the original Iron Man? He is a minor character, not worth a full standalone movie. How about bringing out some of the other characters who are original?

It would be really cool to see a spin off, with some avenger cameos.

War Machine aint a minor character when he got his own comic book.

@tazmaniak

A war machine movie would be pretty sweet. Another film that's in the mainstream universe gives Marvel a chance to introduce more characters without their films getting too crowded.

war machine was amazing in iron man 2,can't wait for a spin off movie.

you could have it crossover with iron man 3.

a 4 hour "armour wars" story would be epic.

I'd love to see Fury need him for specific missions where they need to send just one man in rather than a whole army. Tie in Latveria, they are raising an army and Fury wants War Machine to go in and literally be a one man army. It can be like Black Hawk Down, where maybe he's injured or his large machine-gun gets shot off and he has to defend himself while yet taking a stand against Latveria's army. If no Latveria, then A.I.M could be a good enemy army.

Don Cheadle is a good actor but I'm not sure how strong a sidekick character would be as the lead role but these days you never can tell....I guess it may depend on how good the story line is.

War Machine is by far much cooler than Iron Man, Iron Man is kinda lame actually. War Machine movie would be sick, plus it would increase the value of my first appearance comic of him, go War Machine!!

I find War Machine to be a bland, redundant character. He doesn't have the flaws and quirks that make Tony Stark interesting and doesn't really have a rogues gallery outside of Iron Man's villains. Even his name and armor color are uninspired and boring. He works as Tony's Jiminy Cricket. He's his conscience. It's cool if he takes over when Stark is drunk or incapacitated in some other way, but by himself? Blech! If Marvel are going to focus on African-American characters, give me Black Panther or Luke Cage any day.

Warmachine in the current movie verse feels to me like he is filling the shoes of Capt America,He's the go-to guy for the US Government, I'd love to see him on his own but I think it would be an unneeded stretch for the character, especially if they can just include him in IM3 or put him in the Avengers. Theres too many characters vie-ing for the same ground. IM is out there fighting terrorists and keeping the world safe, WM is going to do that under the US's orders and then your throw Cap, and the Avengers in the mix and WM seems less imortant.
