Shane Black is in Final Negotiations to Direct Iron Man 3

As rumored, Deadline is confirming that writer/director Shane Black is on the verge of being hired to helm Iron Man 3.

Muses Deadline, "Shane is first and foremost a writer but it's not clear whether he'll be penning the IM3 script as well. 'That's not figured out,' our source says. Of course, everyone in and around Marvel is keeping mum. But Black has a long relationship with Robert Downey Jr since Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. Not only did Shane make his directing debut on the 2005 cult favorite he co-wrote, but it helped re-launch Downey Jr’s career. When news leaked out that Marvel was meeting with several directors including Shane, fanboys approved. So they should exult now that negotiations are wrapping up with Black's agency WME and manager David Greenblatt's GreenLit Creative."

Black, who created Lethal Weapon, has also been working on movie versions of pulp hero Doc Savage and the Manga, Death Note. No word on where those projects would fall in his schedule if he was brought aboard Iron Man 3.

I hope this is just as good as Aronofsky doing The Wolverine.

Didn't enjoy Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang too much, so I hope he doesn't get the job. I also hope Downey Jr isn't behind this, as it was him who insisted on the screenwriter for Iron Man 2, and I think it's fair to say that was the weakest part of that movie. Deadline are almost always reliable though, so we'll wait and see I guess.

How can anyone dislike 'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang'? The same guy doesn't think Henry Cavill doesn't look like Superman?

I actually like Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang a lot, it was a great movie, well directed and well written, well lets see if the guy can helm a super hero movie.

a good fit, I am happy with this decision and its much more realistic pick, better chance of this happening then some of the outlandish choices couple of people were suggesting

Draco2824: Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang is the only movie he's directed. Not exactly a great resume, but I suppose you could say the same for Jon Favreau who had previously directed Elf. We'll have to wait and see I suppose. Either way, I don't think Black is qualified to pick up the reigns of a huge franchise like Iron Man.

@Intruder this isn't as left field as getting the dude behind "Elf" to direct a unknown hero, which whole studio depended on. "Left Field", "Unknown" and "Risky", are the type of directors marvel pick and it works for them.

@JoshW neither was Fav like you said the man behind "Elf", so I don't see why a lot of you are so shocked by this. Look at wheadon what movie has he directed exactly that makes him qualified to handle a massive movie such as The Avengers.

Just to clarify, I didnt hate Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang but it was not that good a movie in terms of direction or script IMO. I have faith that Marvel will make the right choice (as they seemingly have from day one) but there are many, many other writers/directors who would be better suited to taking over such a successful franchise.

With the amount of involvement Marvel has with their pictures everything will be in good hands.

So long as the feel an attention to detail isn't lost from the first two movies I'm in! Favreau nailed it from every aspect as far as incorporating existing Iron Man source material into the franchise so it will take guts to match that enthusiasm. I he gets it, good and good luck. if he doesn't I trust Marvel to make the most sensible and best choice

@JoshW

not a huge resume. wait what is Joss Whedon's direting resume???

Marvel is bold with their selections, no doubt. but i think IM3 needs some fresh blood and Black certainly understands smart dialog, critical for RDJ, and can write a classic, not just good, action movie. Favreau is still mediocre at best in action...although C & A looks promising, so I support this.

@Arminies
I do too, but so hope they don't have yet another armor guy vs. armor guy final battle. enough already!!

write33: How about all the great TV shows he directed and created/wrote (not to mention his amazing run on Astonishing X-Men for Marvel) as well as Serenity? That movie didnt do great in the box office, but Whedon nailed epic action scenes and has a track record of handing ensemble casts VERY well...perfect resume for The Avengers IMO. :)

@JoshW
absolutely agree on Joss W being a fantastic choice for Avengers! in fact, truly, am re-reading his Astonishing run currently. (fine avatar sir) my point was, if you go by JW's box office performance? and include the quick cancellations of Dollhouse and Firefly? Then no way do you give him such a high profile job. But that said, when you look beyond those and instead focus on the man's talents and sense for this type of material, and successful track record with Buffy even, I believe he will deliver a classic. It's an unexpected but potentially, fanboy dream Director selection.

@Arminies
there is a lot i like about Favreau in IM2, but the action was mediocre. Too brief. Too limited in scope. just not what i want to see. the first fight with Whiplash is so meh on repeat viewings. and at the end? IM and WM just stand there and spin a circle as they fire aware. I hope IM3 finds a way to bring dynamic action AND a non-armor antagonist. Mandarin seems perfect.

he maybe the right choice to write the film,but i don't know if his the right choice to direct,i haven't seen any of his films that his directed.

I think this is the first time I've ever disagreed with you. The writing in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is BRILLIANT. The scene where accidentally shoots that guy and says, "I thought there was like an 8 percent chance." One of the sneakiest, most funniest movies of all time. And when someone is called Gay Perry the whole movie, brilliant.

Favorite lines from Kiss Kiss Bang Bang:

Perry: My $2000 ceramic Vektor my mother got me as a special gift. You threw in the lake next to the car. What happens when they drag the lake? You think they'll find my pistol. Jesus. Look up "idiot" in the dictionary. You know what you'll find?

Harry: A picture of me?

Perry: No! The definition of the word idiot, which you [frick]ing are!

Intruder@ not bad idea. Ritchie as the director and Black as the writer could work.

NERO@ Hilarious!;) I gotta see that movie again!

ORION@ He directed and screen writed Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang starring Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer.
He also screenwrited Lethal Weapon 1., The Last Boy Scout, Last Action Hero and The Long Kiss Goodnight.
Ouh... And The Monster Squad.
