Shane Black Talks More About Iron Man 3 And Chances Of Adapting "Demon In A Bottle"!

The Iron Man 3 director talks about how he plans on handling the tone and action for the movie, as well as whether or not he plans on including elements from "Demon In A Bottle" and much more...

Comic Book Resources caught up with Shane Black at Long Beach Comic Con this past weekend and managed to get some very interesting pieces of information out of him, including whether or not he'd be willing to adapt the classic story line, "Demon In A Bottle" for the movie. Below are a few excerpts from the interview, but be sure to click on the link below to read it in full.

On How His Grounded And Realistic Vision Will Effect Iron Man 3:

I think the approach is not just a visual or cinema-graphic approach. Iron Man is a different type of property, in a way, because Robert Downy is a different type of actor, number one. If you look at the first "Iron Man," the events of the story feels like the crossover between what's in a comic book and what's in real life. There's always been the tendency to make Iron Man the real-world superhero who deals with things a bit more rooted in geopolitical reality and then have comic book elements added. What's interesting to me about the first movie, and to some extent the second movie, is the character. If you're really paying attention to the story, the more people care about the character, the more people will care about the outcome, I think.

On The "Stylistic Stamp" He Intends On Putting On The Movie After Jon Favreau:

I believe in something I didn't make up; it's called the monkey bars approach. If you've ever been to a jungle gym, it looks on the outside very rigid and structured because there's all these bars that are locked in place and elaborately structured. But if you go inside the monkey bars, there's room to play around. So as long as the monkey bars framework exists, you can still play. What I wouldn't want to do is just play and that's it. Get the script first, get the script nailed down -- we're working very hard to ensure we're not writing the script as we approach production, that we actually know what we're doing so we can make production the process of enhancing and enriching and fulfilling the potential of our preexisting script instead of trying to make it up as we go along. I'm really thrilled to be as far along as we are, already.

On Once Again Working With Robert Downey Jr.:

Well, the great news is that Robert is a stand up guy. He sort of called me up and gave me this opportunity, in a sense, to launch a directing career. "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" was an ok movie, but I don't think it did very well; no one was clamoring for me after that. I think Robert was, on the one hand, very generous, and if I can be so bold, also very smart to return to someone who really understands and adores his voice. I just love that actor, I will write for that actor any day of the week. So he turned to someone who was very diligent about understanding and appreciating what he has to bring to the film, and to the extent that I can do that, I think absolutely in terms of success of this "Iron Man 3" movie. If we get Downey and tap what he does best, we can't lose.

On The Chances Of Seeing An Adaptation Of "Demon In A Bottle":

No, because if we go there -- it's part of Tony's character, but I think the "Demon In A Bottle" aspect, if you go there, you really have to go there. The film then becomes about that, because the journey that involves recovering from alcoholism is an entire movie. I mean, I want to keep it dark and interesting and edgy and spicy and all those things, but I don't think we want to go as far as to deal with Tony's descent into alcoholic madness. That's maybe not where we want to be.

On How Iron Man 3 Will Differ From Other Comic Book Movies:

I think it would be a return to the type of action movie I remember so fondly, which is less random carnage and more thriller -- less action, more suspense. More character-driven urgency that makes you want to find out what happens to the guy, not what happens to the building behind the guy. There's a certain retro vibe that I love which is the idea of taking modern technology and shot-making and even color palettes and injecting them with this sense of thriller-esque, 1970s stuff that makes it seem more edgy and accessible as opposed to just loud and obnoxious. That's kind of where I'm heading.

I hope this has at least Ghost in it! And hopefully it'll tease Mandarin! :)

I think Downey just got himself in pole position with this choice of director.

@deathmetalbrian

funny you say that, I was hating him more with every interview until that one. finally he sounds like his head is in the right place. I worry that he can't handle the broader scope that has be in a superhero story, but eh, maybe he can deliver after all. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a vastly underrated story.

Didn't they already try that in the last film with disastrous results?

Oh great, no demon in the bottle. If this is the final iron man film, then I'll be pissed because Demon in the bottle I think SHOULD BE the big finale to the series plus it's a great story.

I'm shocked he called Kiss Kiss Bang Bang just ok. First off; it's his own work (which I guess is why he is overly critical of it) and second, it's a FANTASTIC film!! All you people who are worried- don't be. It's going to be better than what JF would have done for sure. IM2 was complete and utter shit and the fact Black knows this shows a very good sign!

This is good, I like the idea of "more suspense, less action" action type movies...

Oh, and @Nomis I agree with you that Mandarin should be in this movie and that Demon in a Bottle would be a great storyline for him to do, but I am glad that he isn't doing demon in a bottle. What he is saying is basically that he doesn't want to overstuff the movie with too many things. Like, yes, he can determine how the story goes, but he feels like having the Demon in a Bottle story NOT being the main story will take away from the awesomeness that is the Demon in a Bottle story.
We all know what can happen when you try to put too many story-lines into a single movie. I would rather take a good Ironman movie of a lesser-known story/villain than a bad Ironman movie with Demon in a Bottle and Mandarin.

I don't know everybody else is talking about above. but I everything I just read here seem good at all points to me.

I just hope that Marvel does another Iron-man trilogy is so.

Cuz I'd say at this point to end this trilogy with the star of the weak Iron-man II as him being a drunk would be a bad move.

Save it for round four.

I love how he keeps taking potshots at IM2 lol

Tony Stark is a great character study with his laundry list of character defaults. Could be Marvel's next best movie.

The only thing I dont like about this guy is that he's adamant not to include Mandarin. I mean the character can be reworked to fit a modern setting, at least set him up for Avengers 2! Also keep teasing Thanos for Avengers 3!

@TheWingWonder

I agree.

But I would like to see Tony affected by the events of The Avengers. Possibly some post-dramatic stress and increase drinking. Tony was emmotionally shaken after the events of the Ultimates. Thought that was dope.

@TheWingedWonder Your spot on! I/We want a damn good movie with a damn story abd tone to back it up. Not some shity action film with junk blowing every five minutes for good reason.

You make a good story by making me care about whats going on. Bringing back real action films.

Actually, I haven't heard a CBM director in a LONG time discuss a project with as much insight and depth as Black...it's refreshing to see a director in the age of schlock like Transformers, Twilight, Paranormal Whatever, etc. Give some old school film respect to a 50-year old comic character. The more I hear his ideas about IM3, the more stoked I get.

Mandarin or FAIL. This is suppose to be the last Iron Man. Mandarin is to Iron Man what Joker is to Batman. How can you have an Iron Man Triolgy with no Mandarin. Gotta happen people.

I'm liking Mandarin as the villan but you have to make this a character that people want to see on screen. Venom is a great example of how to screw up a villan. This has to be a believeable character that is not stuck in kimono garb racist representation of where he has come from.

He sounds like he has it nailed.. The last movie overdid it with War machine and pushing avengers into the storyline.. They shouldve made a mesh of the demon in a bottle and extremis storylines.. wrap it up over the space of IM 2, avengers and IM3..
I still really liked IM2 tho..

His approach to Iron Man 3 sounds very interesting. I was looking forward to seeing the "Demon In A Bottle" arc on the big screen though. Especially since we got hints of it in Iron Man and even more so in Iron Man 2.

As long as this turns out to be as good as the first movie and makes up for the second one, I'm good.

I'm a big fan of Shane Black. He's one of the most successful screenwriters who has ever lived, so I have full faith he's going to deliver a great, compelling story and that RDJ is going to once again knock it out of the park with his performance. I'm really keyed for this.
