Back in May, when the first set photos for Iron Man 3 hit, we saw a new type of Iron Man armor very similar to the Iron Patriot armor seen in the comics. Later on in production, that theory was debunked by sources at Latino Review, saying that the suit was simply War Machine's but with a color change. Now, new sources offer reason to believe that the character license will be used in Iron Man 3. New trademarked applications for Iron Patriot and Avengers Initiative on a variety of goods and services besides comics have appeared on the United States Patent and Trade Office website. After the giant success of The Avengers, new applications for the brand are expected , but not for a character like Iron Patriot. The Iron Patriot applications cover a wide range of goods and services, from action figures to Christmas ornaments. It is very unusual for Marvel to be protecting a character that is not well known to the general public as of now, unless he is making an appearance in Iron Man 3 of course; we will just have to wait and see. Stay tuned to CBM for more Iron Man 3 news.

Described as a “technological crisis thriller,” set in the world of international war, arms & terror, Marvel Studios' “Iron Man 3” stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Dale Dickey, Ashley Hamilton, James Badge Dale, with Sir Ben Kingsley and Jon Favreau. Shane Black (“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”) takes over directorial duties from Jon Favreau, who helmed the first two “Iron Man” films. Principal photography will occur primarily in North Carolina and China. And “Iron Man 3” is set for release in May 3, 2013.

I thought they said that the Iron Patriot armor was new armor for Rhodey. So doesn't that mean that, even though it's not Norman, it's STILL technically the Iron Patriot...?

How could they possibly use Norman when Sony has them Spider-Man rights

Maybe the US Military changed Rhodey's armor nickname from War Machine to Iron Patriot. Temporarily. You know, to the calm the hippies about the name.

This is a bit obvious. The armor will have to have a name, not the character that's usually in it. Like War Machine, a name is all the Iron Patriot will be.

It's not like they can deny the armor isn't based on Iron Patriot

Prediction: War Machine will have the armor at first, intending to use it for good. By the end of the movie it will be stolen and someone (obviously not Norman Osborn) will were it for evil, becoming Iron Patriot.

I would think Marvel would want to patent all the potential characters and marketing opportunities, regardless of if they end up using them or not.

And here I thought that MARVEL was all about staying true to the source, and that they would never change or alter characters just to fit their movies like that terrible, awful, heinous, scandalous Nolan. /end sarcasm

Well the military doesn't want their new mascot, an officially sanctioned, in the chain of command Iron Man, to have a name like War Machine. Iron Patriot sounds much more heroic. Probably just a military re-branding effort.

The "it should stay true to the source" argument is just stupid, the comics don't even remain faithful to themselves half the time, altering and changing things on a whim.

@TheFettMan; 3 times so far. It was very faithful in some areas, largely telling the same story as THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, with bits of KNIGHTFALL and No Man's Land in there. Nolan took some liberties sure, but it's his vision and he's allowed to that. Just like any writer or artist working on the comic is allowed to do that, because these type of characters live in a constant state of creative flux and are constantly evolving over time.

Think about it. Rhodey is a government man in the MCU. They don't have Norman Osborn so they are taking a different approach. Rhodey will become America's official hero, The Iron Patriot, because "This suit is not about one MAN it's about the nation of AMURUCUH!"

Civil war could be led by Iron Patriot in stead of Iron Man.

It's the new armor for Rhodey. It's obviously going to be CALLED the Iron Patriot since Rhodey is in the air force. The US military is probably going to use it to spread patriotism and unity, especially now that the military has control of some Stark Tech which they so badly wanted. Marvel doesn't have the rights to Norman Osborn, so anyone thinking that should stop.

@TheDukeOfNY right on. I don't mind changes as they are inevitable.

My biggest problem with Nolan wasn't the changes to story but the changes to character personalities, mainly Bruce/Batman.

Anyway Nolan is done with his vision, he made huge amounts of money for WB and the success can't be denied
PistonSmash
PistonSmash - 9/1/2012, 9:21 AM
Also, if you think about it, since it is basically the War Machine armor recolored, if you remember in IM2 they never officially CALLED the armor anything, Tony said " you want a be a war machine, go ahead, do it." The Iron Man in the movie is called Iron Man by the people, but the war machine was never called anything but Rhodey. Therefore, the US Gov probably recolored it and gave it a moniker so the people would distinguish who is who.

If not, at least let it be a villain.

From some stuff that's been reported I think they're going to try to make IM look like a bad guy here. Probably frame him or something

Then I can see something to PistonSmash's point where the govt. says we don't need IM we have the IP and use him as a showcase and wouldn't be surprised if they try to use him to bring Starks down too.
