From Academy Award®--winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes "John Carter"—a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). "John Carter" is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

I am reading the book right now for the first time. I have to tell you that it is a great read and I see why it has maintained its popularity for so long.

The only thing I cringe about is knowing Disney they will add their touch to it somehow.

totally awesome! John Carter kicking ass for 100 years. Glad to see this made as a movie; I remember the old John Carter of Mars comics back in the 70's!

I'm most of the way through A Princess of Mars (free for the Kindle!) Great read, and quite engaging sci-fi / fantasy for a 100 year old book.

still on the fence. i love the way it looks, but i think the "disney" dna will be the addition of humor. the comic relief is always touchy with these adaptations. i'm not saying i'm a fan of making everything dark and grim a la dark knight... i would even have been ok with the humor level of green lantern if the movie hadn't been flawed in other ways.

but the one thing i remember about the john carter books is that they are dead serious from start to finish. these people are battle-hardened from years of brutality and conflict, and this is one film i think would have benefited from that kind of gravitas.

for those of you reading the books for the first time, i'd be curious to hear if you agree when you've finished a volume or two.

I don't mind comic relief as long as it is just that -- relief -- and not comic annoyance (a certain floppy eared Gungan, anyone?). There are opportunities for comedy which can endear us to certain characters, Woola being chief among them. And I wouldn't see any harm in mining Carter's culture shock for some humor, though the green Martians themselves are a pretty no-nonsense, brutal species.

I don't see Carter tossing off wisecracks, but the story is a swashbuckler, so I'd expect *some* physical humor to ensue during the daring rescues.

Oh, I literally finished the first book within the last hour. It certainly is finale to be savored and pondered for a while before moving on to the next adventure!

The style of EDGAR RICE BURROUGH'S JOHN CARTER OF
MARS books can be attributed to his female
writer's secretary (who was also his lover), she
was the one with the awesome style of prose.

EDGAR just wrote down his ideas long-hand and
scribbled briefly on note-pads, his secretary
put them into beautiful finished form. Of course,
women weren't given any credit back in those days.

It is her awesome style that you read in the books,
and an extremely awesome style it was. But EDGAR
did come up with all the awesome ideas!

He wrote all his books this way with his writing-
secretary.

All I know is these stories are awesomely created
and written and this movie looks FANTASTIC!

Man, what a ton of good CBM-related movies this
year! This summer is going to be mind-boggling!

2012 is the year of THE CBM!

I can't wait to see this film. After having seen the marvels that Andrew Stanton worked with Wall-E and Finding Nemo I trust that John Carter is going to be a spectacular ride. The SuperBowl trailer really had me gasping for air after the awesomeness left my screen!
