BATMAN & ROBIN Star George Clooney Tried To Talk Ben Affleck Out Of Playing The DCEU's Dark Knight

George Clooney's career was very nearly destroyed by starring in Batman & Robin, and in a new interview, the actor reveals the advice he gave to Ben Affleck before he joined the DC Extended Universe...

Ben Affleck has ditched the cape and cowl and will no longer play the DCEU's Batman after three appearances. While Matt Reeves now looks for a replacement, another actor to have donned the costume has revealed the advice he gave to Affleck when he first considered playing the Dark Knight: George Clooney.

1997's Batman & Robin proved to be a disaster for him, and it turns out that he learned quite a few lessons from the experience of playing a superhero in the critically panned DC Comics adaptation.

"[Arnold] Schwarzenegger was paid, I think, $25 million for that, which was like 20 times more than I was paid for it, and, you know, we never even worked together! We worked together one day. But I took all the heat. Now, fair deal; I was playing Batman and I wasn’t good in it, and it wasn’t a good film, but what I learned from that failure was, I had to rethink how I was working. Because now I wasn’t just an actor getting a role, I was being held responsible for the film itself."

Years later, Clooney worked with Affleck on Argo as a producer and he cautioned the filmmaker to think hard before becoming the new Batman "I actually did talk to him about it," he reveals. "I said, ‘Don’t do it.’ It was only from my experience, which is, you know..." While Affleck didn’t take his advice, Clooney was quick to add that, "He did great, though."

Affleck was, in fact, an awesome Batman, but the problems lay with the movies he starred in.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice took a critical drubbing due to some strange creative decisions, the Caped Crusader's cameo in Suicide Squad wasn't enough to save the movie, and Justice League was a huge mess due to those reshoots.

Do you think Affleck should have taken Clooney's advice?

I agree that he was awesome in BvS but holy hell he was downright EMBARRASING in JL. I felt so sorry for him, from winning oscars to lying on fake grass on a batsuit drunk as hell

In fairness, the entire internet tried to talk Affleck out of it.

Affleck is a good actor no doubt, but he just doesn't have it in him to play a superhero anymore, with Batman being a character who's in peak physical condition and Affleck's on and off health issues, it just cannot work.

In BvS though, again, he's a good actor failed by bad writing.

@RageDriver2401 - "lol" BvS had excellent writing.

@Draximos - Yeah, so’s the writing for Fast and the Furious and Transformers. BvS really is on a par with such excellently written movies!

@TedDanson - lol some people just can't accept reality. The script was so bad they brought in Chris Terrio to doctor the script.

And it still turned out bad. Lol.

@RageDriver2401 - Any of you got any actual points?
It's memecity on this site, but actual discussion with a growth-minded pursuit of truth I rarely see expressed.

@Draximos - Martha and basically the whole way Lex Luthor was wrote.

There, points.

What about how Lex was written?

@Draximos - you tell a joke like "BvS writing was excellent", you're bound to get laughs like that only.

God I miss Robin as a main character in Batman stories...

@MaximusTheMad - The Batman 2004 is underrated. Everyone talks about BTAS but The Batman 2004 was pretty good too.

@Nightwing1015 - Agreed. I liked it. Although missed some of the mainstream villians...if I remember correctly they were not allowed to use Two Face and Scarecrow. But I remember the show being pretty fun. Way more light than BTAS.

@Tufasrox - They actually designed Scarecrow too. So it's a shame:

The character designs were so fresh and it had such a dynamic tone

I can remember loving the clayface origin in this as a kid, if anyone hasn't seen it, check it out

@Nightwing1015 - No way man!! Never seen this before! Way too cool. That looks awesome. Did they have a Two Face one too?
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 5/14/2019, 1:32 PM
@Tufasrox - No, not that I know of. There's a bunch of other alternate designs for the characters that they decided against using though. Take a look for them, they're pretty cool:
